The only reason why i became an XBOX person when the newest generation came out was my impatience didnt want to wait for PS3 one year longer and when it finally came out I just realised i didnt have enough space for a second console in my room

Looks very much like Uncharted, Would of liked to see them go a bit more of a darker/mature look.

Quote:
- Director Bruce Straley on online: “We’re going to have some sort of online component. We’re working on a bunch of ideas, but we haven’t nailed anything down. We definitely know it’s going to be awesome.”
- Once Uncharted 2 was done, there were major changes at Naughty Dog
- Naughty Dog was receiving a lot of requests to license the Uncharted engine from internal/external studios
- Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells: “[The engine] just isn’t set up to be able to be worked on outside of our office. So really the only way to leverage that would be to get a second team going.”
- One reason for Naughty Dog’s expansion was that they had a ton of talent and Evan Wells didn’t want to lose anyone
- Wells: “So many people here at Naughty Dog who are environment modelers or designers or animators could be leads or directors at any other company. They’re just really masters of their craft and doing a great job here, so we wanted to give them an opportunity to grow.”
- Two different teams made so the creators could focus completely on one project rather than bouncing back and forth
- New team decided to make a new IP that allowed them to make what they wanted
- The team looked at their favorite films like Road to Perdition and True Grit
- Combat is inspired by Anton Chigurh’s intense gun battle with Llewelyn Moss (No Country for Old Men)
- Movie had little music and sometimes no dialogue for long stretches of time
- Movie uses ambient noise, like exhausted breathing and booming guns
- The team is going for as much tension as possible in place of a non-stop action thrill ride
- Since there are limited resources, Joel won’t be running around blasting a machine gun
- One bullet can kill in this world
- This lethality affects enemy decisions
- When Joel pulls out a gun and kills an enemy, the others will hide or try to flank his position
- Enemies will come right at Joel is they notice he only has a melee weapon
- Naughty Dog calls the AI system “Balance of Power”
- This system always adapts and dynamically changes as enemies and Joel trade off the upper hand
- The team is adding emotion and personality to the enemies alongside the advanced AI
- Enemies get angry when a friend dies, they warn each other of danger, and they’re scared when they’ve lost the upper hand
- Can’t just hide and wait for your health to recharge
- Since there is persistent health, you’ll have to use a health pack to repair damage and budget enough time to apply it
- Control Joel
- Ellie is an AI-driven non-playable character
- Naughty Dog has decided against co-op play
- Ellie will be very capable and won’t get in your way
- “We know if the entire thing is an escort mission you’re gonna hate it. The easy thing for us to do is every time there is combat she just hides somewhere and then she comes out at the end. We gave ourselves the insane challenge of, ‘How do we make her a part of the combat space?’”
- Game Informer says Ellie does a great job of tagging along in the demo, staying out of sight, warning Joel of danger, and getting him out of jams
- Players won’t have to worry on blaming a game over on Ellie as long as they don’t purposely lure enemies to her position or completely ignore when she’s obviously in trouble
- Platforming and puzzle solving were minimally present in the demo
- It will be important to figure out how to navigate spatial problems with unique Ellie and Joel abilities
- Each can do things the other can’t, and they must work together to move forward
- Game Informer also didn’t see the spore-infected humans like those in the debut trailer
- Focusing on the human antagonists currently since they’re the focus of the game
- There will be more encounters with humans than the infected
- Different human factions all have different goals
- Some factions will help you along the way if it benefits them somehow
- Joel/Ellie are part of a larger cast of characters full of allies and enemies that will come in and out of their adventure as they pass through cities, suburbs, and rural areas
- Game begins as Joel and Ellie meet in Boston 20 years after the fungal outbreak
- Ellie is an orphan, so she hasn’t seen the old world or anything outside the walls of the oppressive military quarantine zone she grew up in
- Ellie is obsessed with relics from our culture such as music and books
- She always gets in trouble at her boarding house
- Joel is in his late forties, has been through a lot of heavy stuff to survive
- Joel runs drugs and weapons through the quarantine zone’s black market
- The bleak locale is littered with checkpoints and constant body scans for traces of the infection
- You’re executed immediately if you come up positive
- Spores can be transmitted through the air, though it needs to be a concentrated and confined space to truly spread
- Joel is recruited to sneak Ellie out of the quarantine zone
- The reason for this is unknown
- Joel agrees, but things go horribly wrong and they are pursued by the military
- Joel thinks about leaving Ellie, but he promised a dying friend that he’d escort her to safety
- Both of them go west on a journey across the U.S. when a nearby safe haven doesn’t work out

“The Killing”

- Joel and Ellie make it to Pittsburgh, though they might not make it any further if they don’t fight back against the scavengers
- Joel elbows his attacker and turns the tables
- Joel slams the man down on the glass shard and he comes up sputtering blood pouring out of his throat
- Ellie is busy biting her captor’s arm and gets slapped to the ground
- Ellie struggles with him and is looking to escape while Joel runs over to kick the scavenger in the face
- The man staggers to his feet and Joel beats him down
- More scavengers enter the store, so Joel and Ellie split up to find cover
- Joel takes out a handgun
- The place is completely dark aside from light sources from the sunbeams pouring in from the outside
- Enemies are dark silhouettes coming closer
- Joel pops up and takes one down, then moves to a new spot
- He tries to fire at another scavenger, but he’s out of bullets and the clicks of the empty chamber echo through the room
- The man closes in on Joel and taunts him since he seems to understand that Joel is out of bullets
- Ellie then hurls a brick into the man’s head
- Joel punches the man out
- Another scavenger manages to bash a 2×4 into Joel’s back
- Joel dodges the second swipe and takes 2×4
- He knocks the man to the ground and although he pleads for mercy, Joel beats his skull without hesitation
- More men are climbing over the rubble to get to them, so Joel and Ellie sneak out the side of the store
- Joel takes a look back and sees a scavenger surveying the bloody scene
- The men head out and Joel targets one in an alcove
- Joel sneaks up behind him, chokes him
- “Hey, you found anything? shouts an enemy off in the distance
- Joel and Ellie sneak away; the man approaches the area and sees the dead body
- The man knows Joel and Ellie are still there and shouts this out to the rest of the gang
- Joel picks up a brick and throws it at him
- Joel charges at him while the man is stunned and kills him with the 2×4
- He searches the body, finds a few bullets
- Joel loads the bullets into his gun, looks up, and spots a scavenger carrying a pipe
- The man runs off, and Joel chases him, carefully creeping around the aisles with his gun raised
- There’s no trace of the enemy, and the only sound is Joel breathing/his footsteps
- The man screams and charges him from behind, but Joel turns and shoots him down in time
- Straley on a sequel: “We only think about one game at a time.”
- Creative director Neil Druckmann on a sequel: “The story is self-contained. The story stands on its own. We don’t end on a cliffhanger. The characters and the journey they go through ends with the story.”

“Escape”

- Joel eyes up the buss that blocks the way they came into the city
- Joel and Ellie go through the streets looking for a way out
- They see a closed garage and head on over to the area
- Ellie scampers under the door as Joel holds it up
- She warns Joel that there is some “gnarly stuff” in the garage
- Joel eventually dashes through the garage door, and turns around to grab it and lower it quietly
- There are a few bodies and large piles of clothes, shoes, and random supplies in the garage
- This faction funnels all the highway traffic into a single ambush point, kills anyone who drives in, and takes all of their things
- They go up some nearby stairs; Ellie asks Joel how he knew about the ambush; he replies, “I’ve been on both sides.”
- Both Joel and Ellie search through the place
- Ellie finds dirty clothes and a few more bullets
- They move outdoors, see a bridge, and make their way toward it
- As they head to the bridge, they see bullet holes in the cars with long-dead bodies inside
- Joel speculates that the military killed these people since they can’t let everyone in and dead people don’t get infected; sacrifice a few to save the many
- The two walk on the roofs and hoods as the cars get closer together
- Crows take to the sky near the gate ahead; there is a brief whistle sound from up ahead
- Two shadowy figures climb up on some cars and the demo fades to black
One bullet one kill... Nice!!!!

More Details On The Last of Us Along With HD GameInformer Scans..

The Last of Us is a gripping story of a father and a daughter caught in a post apocalypse zombie world, while the pair have to survive against zombies they also have to watch out for other survivors who like them believe this is a time for “every man for himself” rather than “United we stand” the game has been under development for 2 years now and was premiered at last years SPIKE VGA awards but after the first trailer there has been no new game play footage and instead we have had to settle for screenshots and now magazine scans. We can always fall back on the basic saying of “A picture is worth a thousand words” right?

In the March issue of Gameinformer the game is under the spotlight: we learn about the release date, online and more into the game such as story and combat.

So far the confirmed details on the game are

“Late” 2012 release date (Probably around November or Q4 2012)
Single player campaign (no local / online coop)
There WILL be multiplayer (although the process is still in thought and no game modes / ideas are confirmed as of yet)
The details below MAY contain spoilers to read them at your own discretion:

-First described scenario: Joel and Ellie are driving in a pick-up truck and see a road that is blocked off into a single narrow passage. Someone clutching their stomach comes running up and asks for help. Ellie asks if they’re going to stop and help, but Joel says they’re actually looters who want to steal their stuff, so they try to drive on past them, causing the scavengers pull out guns and start shooting at them. Joel and Ellie almost get away, but just before they do, but their truck is hit with a city bus, knocking it into a storefront. Joel and Ellie get forcefully pulled out of the truck by the scavengers and a big fight erupts, and then the description just stops. This is presumably the hobo scene we seen in the screenshots.

-The second team came about due to constant requests from both internal and external studios to license their engine. However, the engine doesn’t have a toolchain or documentatin set to facilitate that, so the only way to leverage their technology on a second game was to create a second team. The other reason was that they didn’t want to lose their staff to other companies because of career ceilings or burnout from working on too many Uncharted games, so creating a second team let them promote a lot more people and let them work on something new. As such, the second team was created. Unlike many other multi team developers, Naughty Dog’s teams are actually completely separate, so staff doesn’t move between the two projects.

-The look of the game was inspired by “Ruin Porn”, which is a branch of photography where people take pictures of ruins that have been overgrown by nature.

-Gustavo Santaolalla is composing. He worked on Brokeback Mountain and Babel.

-The second team was originally considering making a Jak & Daxter sequel along with some other unnamed ideas. The Jak & Daxter idea was explored quite extensively, and Game Informer will have more about it on their website. However, they felt the direction they wanted to go as a company would end up making a poor Jak game, so they ultimately shelved the project. I don’t want to put this in the OP since it’s about The Last Of Us, so I’ll link to it here.

-The game is built around the idea of expanding the Drake/Tenzin relationship into a full game concept.

-The game’s plot setup: Ellie is a 14 year old orphan who lives at a bording house in a military quarantine zone and is fascinating with relics of how the world used to be (like CDs and books), and constantly gets herself in trouble. Joel is in his late 40′s and smuggles guns and drugs to and from the quarantine zone. The issue with this is that the zone is guarded by military checkpoints, and if you’re found to have any signs of the fungus during one of their frequent body scan, you’re executed immediately. The fungus also transfers by air, but it needs a high concentration of spores in a confined space to do so, which is why you don’t see everyone wearing masks. The game starts with Joel agreeing to smuggle Ellie out of the safe zone for some unknown reason, but things go wrong and the military starts chasing him. He was going to abandon Ellie, but a dying friend asked him to escort her to safety, so he does. They try hiding, it fails, and thus start fleeing West across the entire country. Their relationship is supposed to be like the ones you see in True Grit or Road to Perdition.

-Second described scenario: They describe a combat scene which makes the game seem pretty melee heavy where you’re primarily fighting with things like bricks, fists, and wood planks. Bullets are very scarce, but kill enemies in one shot. The weapons you have and the events of combat also effect the behavior of the AI, which is explained in a later bullet point. Plot wise, in this scene Joel and Ellie beat the scavengers who attacked them.

-The game sounds like a hard M rating. Here a snippet of what happened during that fight: “Joel elbows his attacker and turns the tables. He slams the man down on the glass shard and he comes up sputtering with blood pouring out of his throat.”

-Everyone swears constantly during combat, especially Ellie. Expect to hear “motherfuckers”, “fuck”, “fuck face”, and other such terms as often as you do in Battlefield 3, or perhaps even more.

-The game’s plot is self contained, so were this game to bomb and the franchise die, you won’t have to worry about a cliff hanger ending. They didn’t directly rule out sequels though, but just said that they think about one game at a time. However, earlier in the article, they refer to this as a “new IP that we’re definitelyl going to be supporting”.

-The AI and game dynamic is explained a bit more. They want it to be like No Country For Old Men, so a single bullet will kill, but you have very few bullets to give it a “realistic” feel to the setting. The AI also uses a “balance of power” system, where they will stay in cover and try to flank you if you have a gun, but if they see you only have a melee weapon, they will rush you and try to overwhelm you with numbers. They also react based on other events that are happening. They get angry when their friends die, they warn each other when in danger, and they get frightened when they’ve lost the upper hand. Also, during combat you can do things like hitting people with a heavy object such as a thrown brick, which will stun them for a bit and let you get some melee hits in with something like a wood plank. This can also happen between the two characters, with Ellie throwing the brick to let Joel move in with the plank.

-The game has health packs and it takes time to use them, so the added lethality of your weapons goes both ways. This is to encourage you to avoid direction confrontation as much as possible.

-They’re focusing on Ellie’s AI a lot because they want her to be part of the combat. She gives you warnings and helps you out of jams, and her combat capabilities grow over time, though they didn’t say how. Game Informer points out she has a gun on the cover. They’re trying to make it so she doesn’t become an escort question like burden though, as they feel no one would enjoy that.

-Third described scenario: After defeating their attackers, they find their resource stash behind a garage door. Ellie asks Joel how he knew this would be a trap, and Joel mentions that he’s been on both sides of this ruse before (as in, he’s jumped and killed people for resources himself with this trick). Ellie asks if he’s killed a lot of innocent people, and Joel tries to dodge the question. Ellie says she’ll take that as a yes, and he says to take that however she wants. Joel and Ellie then start walking toward a nearby bridge, which is the entry to a quarantine zone. They see tons of cars filled with bullet holes and dead bodies inside them. Ellie asks if it was more scavengers, but Joel says it was most likely the military, because they knew they couldn’t let everyone inside the quarantine zone, and by killing all these people, they would have less infected to deal with.

-There will be platforming and puzzle solving in the final game. These were not seen in the demo, but will involve the dynamic of having two characters. However, these events will be grounded in reality, so you won’t get wild jumping actions like Nathan Drake does.

-You will be facing humans more frequently than infected, as humans are the focus of the game. That’s why none of the infected were shown in the demo.

-The game will also have (location-type and NPC-type spoilers) suburbs and rural areas. Also, not all humans you find will be hostile. Some will actually help you.

-They assert that once again the game is about the characters and their relationship, not the whole infected thing, which is why they showed the infected up front.

The game is going to be a HUGE change up from Uncharted, this time there will be no wild shootouts and no regenerating health. Making players more conservative and cautious about their health is a good step to make the game suit the theme its being set in and this is precisely why Naughty Dog deserves a lot of praise for this project but aside from that they are making sure that Ellie will not hinder the game for anyone, according to the developers the game will not be an escort mission as Ellie will be a smart AI and will hide out during fire fights and come out when its safe. Not to mention the game gives us more freedom to explore than Uncharted did in any of the games, you now have options to go into certain places if you want for additional exploration and the game will not be as linear as Uncharted which will really help make the experience more enjoyable.

This looks and sounds very promising. Maybe it will refresh the survival game genre. really looking forward to this.
btw: the fist time in 25 years the have programmed 2 titles in parallel - normally they have focused only on one game.

Sounds great, although a bit confusing with the two reviews above, 1 saying Joel is doing a favour for someone to get Ellie to safety and the other reviews saying 'father and daughter'?

From 2008 huh? I think they have pushed the current gen graphics about as far as they can. Not shelling out 600 bucks for the PS4 though.

This looks utterly awesome. Sexy visuals & deep gameplay.

This One and PES 2013 are the most anticipated games of the year to me. If God of War 4 is going to be released this year as well, then it's One more game to my list.

There are some more very interesting exclusive Ps3 games that are yet to have an official release date like The last Guardian, Syphon Filter, the new Quantic Dream game (Kara) and etc. There's even a possibility of an annoucement of GT6.

The E3 is very promising to the PS3 owners, and I can't wait to see the gameplay of The Last of Us and God of War Ascension SP video.
