Exactly, I cant wait to open a "FIFA Custom Formations" thread when the game hits so we can post the right settings for each team to play the way they do in real life and also discussing ways to improve it with others. Will be like the PES editing days :)) The more i see that "Adidas Season" thing the more i think il probably end up getting it.
i just hope its implemented properly so it actually matters EDIT, i just watched the vid, looks like pressure should work
that was quite a jumble of user names in that 10v10 shot.
nevermind: that was only after the goal was scored :whew:
in the 2nd vid check when the ball hits the net from a rebound on 14secs.
the question of nets has been put to bed for me there. in the old game it would have popped around and twitched.
so awesome.
Great spot! The nets look awesome, the ripple is so realistic! Although he's a cunt, I can't wait to see a Ronaldo free kick fly into the net at Old Trafford on FIFA 09 :)).

I love the look of the tactical side.
I'm going to be pausing every five minutes to make changes, that's the only thing... It's going to be like Football Manager - concede a goal, move the defence/attack slider up and create more space, score a goal, move it back and get your defenders lining up inside the box... Experimenting with the new improved player arrows sweetkilla described (e.g. get your DMs covering the space your wing-backs leave behind)... And on top of all that, I love the idea of switching the game on the day after Match of the Day is on and playing with updated stats online.
It's just so exciting.
What I did for PES was assign two formations to the tactics buttons (one all out attack and one all out defense) with the other two assign for pressure/mentality. Worked really well and was great to use when going up 1-0 and trying to hang on in the second half.

The presentation looks great especially Im impressed with the volleys and the ball physics.
I just wanted to let you know that when I played the game at Leipzig I made a lovely pass with the outside of my foot between two defenders and the curl of the ball just lead it to my teammate (like you see in the video). Looked absolutely amaazing.

Does it do the curl passing automatically or can you control it with button combo. ?

count me in for the PS3 team!!!
that presentation video was great. Loved the outside of the boot pass down the line. The stretching from defenders to reach the ball before the strikers bang it in. Only thing that i thing is naff is those FIFA09 ads that are supposed to look 3d besides the goals. Think they look shit on tv never mind on a computer game. Take them out please EA. Other than that this game is going to blow Evo out of the water. Live season sounds promising and hope it works well. Great idea.

The first thing the guy says is 'we absolutely listen to what our gamers tell us' - what he fails to say is 'we choose to then ignore most of that for example savable replays and do what we want'
But holy moly.. at the 4:00 mark did i just see what i thought i saw? No not a puddy tat but the player passed the ball and then pointed ahead of himself asking for a pass back :WORSHIP:
I love the 'effort' as they say in the game - things like that really do bring the game out of the robotic AI days and make you feel like you're controlling real life players who are really giving it their all... instead of watching a pass roll past them and jogging after it.
The grass looks lovely on the ashley cole slide tackle
Lay off for free kicks is a god send - long over due as well.
The custom tactics is very nice - i wonder if that will break the way poorer teams can play as well as higher level teams - so you'll be able to pick apart the opposing teams weaknesses by pressuring them if they have a dodgy back 4 or hanging back if they have bad pace so you can counter them.
The 10 vs 10 looks a bit of a mess when the cross comes in as 4 players all run at the ball to score - why didn't any of them hang back on the edge of the box for a follow up or move to the back post just in case the cross went past everyone?

And therein lies one of the main gameplay issues with 10v10 (and 5v5).
That's why I still think 2v2 is the best of all modes as you can develop an understanding with your one team-mate. Also, because one of you has played the cross/pass into the box, you're generally anticipating your team-mate being on the end of it so are not inclined to go for the same ball.
Perhaps if 10v10 teams get into the habit of playing together regularly, they'll develop a bit more of an understanding and play properly.
But 10v10 random people will often decend into primary school football with 20 people chasing after the ball.

It all depends on who you play with, there is no point at all in playing with randoms in this mode unless your lucky enough to find a team full of players that play it properly then you add them to your friends list for the future :))

Honestly without patting myself on the back - i am one of the most unselfish players on fifa you will come across. If im 1 vs 1 with the keeper i would 9/10 times go wide and drag the keeper out and then pass to someone for an open net tap in than risk a shot and get nothing. I'll also hang back on corners on the edge of the box or on the far wing in case the ball zips past everyone and if i was in the box with a ball coming at me id try to knock the ball down with a passed header for someone to get a follow up shot than try and press shoot and header it at the goals.
Does anyone else hate getting 1 v 1 with the keepers or is that just me? For some reason i just can't stand getting 1 v 1.. if im losing 1-0 and have to score then ill take the chance and shoot but if im at 0-0 or im winning then i just cant stomach 1v1. I'd always prefer to set up a goal than score a goal. I must be mad.

I've always enjoyed getting good crosses in, putting in a good through-ball or knocking a header down. Assisting is just as good as scoring for me as a lot of the time the finish is a lot easier than the assist was :))

so ur a cutback king are you?
Im the same in real life
If i can take the goalie out the equation and leave my mate with a tap in then we all benefit and Fifa's no different
If im 1 on 1 with no support ill go for goal but if i do have support ill pass everytime
I just love the idea of 10 vs 10, if you have a good footballing brain this is as realistic as is gets because you play your player as you would do in real life
DagsJT
27 August 08, 14:54
so ur a cutback king are you?
I don't think cutbacks will be a problem in FIFA 09, the defence seems to handle them a lot better. They were only annoying in 08 because the AI was useless and it was an exploit.
Plus playing 10v10, cutbacks shouldn't be an issue unless the defence aren't doing their jobs anyway ;))

aslong as people play as they would in a real life game, then it could potentially be the best gamng experience i could ever have
actually 5v5 is the best gaming experience i have had (with the right people) so yea 10v10 is going to blow my socks off.
just think of the build up play and potential goals, or quick counter attacking, communication on covering a man etc etc
one twos, curled through balls
midfield battles with jostle, the crunching tackles, the sliding to keep the ball from going over the line
oh and the banter
now thats what i am talking about
..........
on the other hand, we all get the red dot or 20 people are invisible :)
Radiation
27 August 08, 15:02
so ur a cutback king are you?
In an exploiting kind of way? Against the AI on 08 i guess you'd say that because i can't help the way the defence and keeper move out of space - online it won't work that way because as soon as a defender comes to me the keeper falls back to his goals (unless they hold Triangle to force the keeper out)
Although i don't purposely try to use cutbacks to exploit myself a goal. I wont run down the wing, cut a pass back and score in the far post. What i meant is lets say ive ran from the centre circle and a through ball is played square on to the keeper - ill have to shoot 1 vs 1 there because its too much of an arse to try to hold it up for a team mate and risk being flattened from behind and no red card being shown.
If the ball is played at an angle so im running towards the corner flags ill hold the ball up and whip a cross in or chipped through ball or whatever. So basically im in the same position as if i had just ran down the wing and crossed a ball in because by that time some defenders will have ran back.
When it's 1 vs 1 online i'd class the cutbacks as an exploit as the AI doesn't know what you're trying to do and wont try to stop you so i wouldn't attempt something like that over and over - but in 10 vs 10 the other team should cover the attackers and spot it coming and block it.
In an ideal world 10 vs 10 should destroy all of the exploit goals because everyone has the chance to mark a man and stop passes being made and track players. But if 1 team have all ran up for a corner and the other team counter fast and end up with 3 vs the keeper - if they use a cutback to score then id save its just tough titties.
Although we won't be able to stop any dodgy AI keeper traits.

Anyone think 10v10 will result in 7-6 scores because people wont be able to mark properly? It's hard to mark on FIFA anyway and it'll be really hard for a whole team to mark efficiently.

hey i was only kidding anyway! nothing wrong with the odd cutback. Its just some players abuse it to the point that thats all they do and it ruins the games for me. Id rather lose 5-0 to a player who plays football then 1-0 to a player who uses Henry to run down the wings and cutback all the bloody time.

In Fifa 08 defending was hard because off the shitty sluggish responses. You just couldn't maneuver your players quick enough and player were past you through no fault of your own
If they have sorted that out like they said then playing in defence will be great

I remembered today something that happened 2 years ago and that I really think shows much of what have happened with fifa and pes.
I remember that a bunch of japanese PES programmers were signed by FIFA. They were the team working on ball physics and positional work as I remember.
Now my theory: these programmers were quite good doing their job and as Konami wasn't paying enough (because konami has never had the urge to invest very much in this game, and I can't understand why...) and they didn't find good replacements. That's why physics in PES have been going downwards. On the other side of the coin, FIFA was alreadxy developing its new engine for FIFA 07 and these programmers surely helped raise the level and put all his expertise and experience to the game.
I remember how at the time a lot of forum members (me included) thought that the genius was seabass and fifa was desperate to emulate pes but they wouldn't achieve it because seabass was that "miracle" man delivering magic every year...
Maybe it's all too far fetched (is that correct in english?) by me, but I think it was a symptom of what was going to happen in next-gen.
Do any of you remember about it?

Hmmm nothing on any manager changes or additions?
The video did look very tasty, though I just can't see the "Premium" Kerrching... form thing working, it has no relevance to your games? If your striker in game is banging goals in he only has to have a form dip in real life and the very next game after scoring a double hatrick his form could drop! Not to mention how much it will be costing to do...

I play Euro with my bluetooth headset twice a week, and it works great. My main problems concern connection to EA Servers and times were it's almost impossible to connect to someone, being the responsability held by EA, PSN or my phone supplier, which is Telefonica Spain and it's shitty (I do get an ammount of DNF because once every two hours my connection is reseted).

I can remember the first time I watched the intro video with this song and the flags of the different countries zooming and blurring in. It was awesome by then...Yeah, FIFA 98, awesome game! I think it was the last good FIFA game before FIFA 08, the indoor pitch was so much fun! That needs to be reintroduced into a football game :)).
Having watched some of the recent videos, this game seems even better than I thought it was before! The custom team tactics look great - I can imagine myself pausing every few minutes to tweak them until I find the ones which perfectly suit me and/or the team I play as and then saving them to use online.
Can't wait, the days until the 11th are going to go very slowly :(.

anyways, i think the g4 and making of vids i've seen today have confirmed it for me. fifa will be my game of choice ahead of that other one for this year. maybe the other surprises with a deep edit mode? i dunno. but 09 this year has really gone a long way to get in my good books with the tactics and responsiveness and the bigger selection of shots.

Quick question concerning the Fifa Live season. RE the free trial the guy mentions in the video, is that for one league?
So you get a free trial for a league of your choice and then you have to pay for others, that right?
I wonder if it will be a one off fee per league or a subscription?

I wonder if it will be a one off fee per league or a subscription?Yeah the free trial is for one of the six supported leagues, for the whole 08/09 season.
Here is the pricing for the other leagues (quoted from FIFA Soccer Blog):
"To keep each additional league up-to-date with Live Season will cost £4.99 (around €7/$7 USD), or you can choose to keep all leagues updated for £12.99 (around €20/$20 USD)."
http://www.fifasoccerblog.com/2008/08/exclusive-fifa-09-live-season-pricing.html
Personally, just having the Premier League will be fine for me because I don't follow the foreign leagues enough to warrant me paying to have it updated weekly - the winter transfer update ala FIFA 08 will be sufficient.

You and me are the same mate! If we played together with some poor strikers wasting averything we serve them we would be just like the arsenal :ACHOO:

Thanks for the info. Yeah I reckon I'd just have the premier league.
I wonder what happens for players stats when you play online though, concerning this?
For example, if someone has Live Season for the La Liga and you do not, does that mean their player stats will be different? Or will it be 'one' online squad for everyone, in which case, will it be updated by Live Season or will it always be the same?
If its the latter then that will be quite poor. Seeing as I mostly play online, Live Season won't mean much to me if it doesn't affect the players I use when playing online.

Don't most TVs let you set up visual profiles? Like mine has Standard/Movie/Dynamic, something else, you can set them all up to your favourite setting and it remembers, so you can just create a Day/Night profile and switch depending on what match you're playing ;)

"Q: Can I simply reset the service and get back to the stats from the start of the season?
Yes, you can reset your squads back to the same way when you first played the game. You can decide whether you want to play with the latest form, or with the default player database: offline and online. It’s your choice each time you play.
Q: Can I play against a player that doesn’t subscribe to this service?
In online matches, a gamer with Live Season can play against a gamer who doesn’t have Live Season but only the subscriber will be able to use the data for his team."

I hope TO GOD that the game ONLY pauses when the ball is DEAD..... The MOST annoying thing about 5vs5 is all the CRAZY pausing that goes on during the match. Now imagine what that would be like with 20 players all being able to pause the game. This really better be fixed.
Is there more excitement about 09 than there was about 08? I think so.
Definately, also considering that 09 is drawing a truckload of attention from the PES fans side (including myself, I've been a hardcore Winning Eleven fan for longer than a decade however I'm looking forward to FIFA this time around) whose expectations for the 2009 release were totally crushed by the terrible quality of PES latest release early builds showed at Leipzig and the likes.
I do believe a large chunk of the "core" PES userbase is now finally ready to jump ship after years of mediocre games, unkept promises, tiny sidegrades and unrewarded loyalty for that shithead that goes by the name of "Seabass" Takatsuka.

I put into EA a long list of such issues about the 5v5 mode, including the pausing problem. I suggested there was no legitimate reason for anyone other than captains to be able to pause the game (so they can make subs, etc).
Anyone other than captains can be pausing for only 2 reasons:
1) to change settings such as camera/controls - but frankly, they should have the courtesy to sort that out before going on-line
2) to be annoying, which I'm sure is the reason 99% of the time
I also don't understand why the match has to pause for someone to quit.
I'll be disapopinted if they haven't addressed many of the administrative issues with 5v5, such as inability to boot those turds that won't go READY in the lobby, when both teams come out in the same coloured kits, inability to substitute/boot humans who deliberately wreck matches by scoring OGs, inability to see what players/formation the captain has chosen...so many stupid things that need sorted.

I think you should be able to pause the game in 10 vs 10, but it wouldn't pause the game for everyone. The game would move on and your player would just stand there on the pitch. Sure it would be annoying if a paused player got the ball but it beats pausing the game for everyone. Or they could make the player become COM while you're in pause mode. Both those solutions beats the current one.

I sure hope valuable lessons are learned from this.

The goal at the 4 min mark - Still have the stupid keepers i see who dive AFTER a ball has passed them. The keeper should have easily saved that but for some stupid reason the AI is set so he only dives at a ball that is on either side of him. So it's over the line before the trigger kicks in.
Pardon my shoddy paint drawing
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/KRad_bucket/fifakeepers.jpg
So if you shoot at a keeper on his line his triggers will be across the line and he will dive and stop shots. (I made a typo then and put SHITS )
As soon as he's off his line and at an angle the trigger lines are in the back of the goals or further out from the box - so if the ball is heading to the trigger in the back of the goal he wont dive until the balls close which means it'll be over the line.

There's part of me still wants to see something good in the PES videos that will make me think "yeah, there's just enough there to tempt me to buy it afterall". But it just looks so bad. The ball physics is terrible, the player movements so ridiculous. It hasn't always been that bad, has it? Didn't PES used to be mind-blowing?
I sincerely hope there's a PES demo. I really want to play it, even it just once, just to know what it feels like, and there's not way I'm coughing up £40 for that privilege.
But the FIFA vids just get me more and more excited. Really love the worn look of the pitch in that vid above. Shame the ball doesn't bobble more along the rough looking surface.

i agree with what's been said. fifa09 doesn't look perfect (goalies and AI still look to need more tlc), but it's damn close to what i want.
PES09 in that comparison vid is not what i'm looking for. i think the main thing seabass needs to improve is the running animations. they run like they have the shits (pardon my french). we should have left that back last gen.
check out PES5 vids and i swear they have nearly the same animations. this whole system needs gutting and re-animating.
anyways, my main hope is for a more active ai on the attack in fifa. i want movement off the ball. it really shouldn't be that hard with all the processing power of next gen consoles. the new vid looks great tho.

I think it always used to be like it is now, difference was there was no competition so it was the first choice and we thought it was great, it's like when you look back now at SWOS or Kick Off or Player Manager and the like, in their day they were awesome, you look back now and think WTF did I really play that? That to me is PES now that it stands against EA's new engine.

Then you have the people who jumped on the 'Pes is better than fifa' bandwagon and have yet to realise everyone has got off going around saying PES 08 was amazing, much better than fifa which is always the same. Or they'll say that PES is for real fans or that fifa 09 looks like it finally might give PES a run for its money.
I love reading the reviews of fifa or PES and you can clearly tell if they're a real fan of the games or just a journo who has heard PES beats fifa and fifa is always the same and so uses those lines in the review.
From the list of improvements i wanted to like this years PES - i was hoping to have 2 great football games to pick between and then i would have gone to PES this year over fifa as it would have been something new to me having skipped PES 08. But In my eyes PES hasn't got a chance.

Regarding EA, I am just sooooo thankful at their willingness to listen to their fans and make corrections. I end up using the pass button most of the time to manually pass the ball into the goals but i shouldn't have to reallyI use finesse shots for open goals, and rarely (if ever) miss them. I suppose that's realistic - you wouldn't try and smash it with your laces at the goal when there's no keeper in it, you would instead try to carefully side-foot it into the net.
For me there is no competition this year about which football game to get out of PES or FIFA - FIFA has made huge leaps and strides forward, taking advantage of the next-gen hardware while PES has had to take backward steps to make the game play like their previous games.
2 weeks until the demo :).

The solution is manual controls. Manual shooting with finesse shot and that would never happen. I play manual and have never had the problem you're talking about.
Edit: Oh and by the way, looking at that video... PES really looks shitty. It's an 4 year old PS2 game with more polygons on the models. If they don't have a new impressive engine next year, they will be more far behind FIFA than FIFA ever was to PES. And it's not like Konami doesn't have the money to invest in a new engine. That's what is so irritating, cheap fucks.

Pro Evo 2009 doesn't actually look quite as bad as I originally thought, but fucking hell... literally, FIFA 09 looks almost real on that Youtube video, like it's been filmed with a camera.
The actual lighting and picture quality in general is so realistic it made me notice the players move slightly robot-like compared to real life... but let's face it, we're at least two consoles from perfect life-like quality. The way the players sidestep a few paces to receive the ball, the way they position their bodies for passes and shots, absolutely perfect.

I sometimes fail (maybe 10%) empty nets when being manual because of me blatantly aiming bad. But I like this, it's my fault. Most of the time there's no problem at all.
When being in SEMI, though, I never miss. That's my experience.

I agree, it's very possible to miss by aiming badly. He was talking about shooting over the empty goal even if you just tap the button and that wont happen on manual.
I would say manual controls is the best thing ever happened to a football game. If I had to choose between manual shooting/passing/cross and 360 movement I would choose manual controls every day of the week. It's the most realistic feature ever implemented imho.

I've only had one really bad miss in front of an open goal in FIFA08 and it was when the "momentum" thingy had clearly kicked in and our team was getting none of the luck. A team-mate played a perfect low cross to me and I had an open goal, aimed straight at it with finesse shot, and the ball went off at some weird angle and miles past the post. I actually laughed out loud it was so bad and I could see it coming because of the the cpu cheating that had been building up in favour of the opposition. Unfortunately, because it was a 5v5 on-line match, I guess my team mates must have thought I was utter shit.
But this is certainly no PES style crap where 80% of your finesse shots are scripted to balloon over the bar. What utter dross that game had become.

you just have to ignore people like that i have a friend who's a pes nut we played a gamed of fifa at my house and i could see that he clearly enjoyed but he turned around and said that pro evo is more life like than fifa saying that fifa players don't run properly and run too slow ie the pace of the game is unrealistic. I happened to have another friend with me who play football for our local side who told this guy that from footballers perspective fifa was more realistic but he wouldn't listen. to me that is true definition of a fanboy depriving himself of a quality gaming experience because of close mindedness oh well.

In every other gameplay area Fifa just trounces on PES and this includes all i seen of Fifa 09.

Do you remember the machines at the arcades that were horses races with little figures of horses and jockeys... it used to say 'place your bets nooowwww' and you'd put money on your horse. The more you bet the more you'd win.
My uncle had a pub that had one of those and he knew the order for the horses so if we were ever out at somewhere like blackpool with them and spotted one he'd watch it until he recognised the pattern and then would grab me and tell me to put a quid on blue, then yellow and then yellow again and a few minutes later id have pockets full of money.

Great review. The live season wasnt mentioned either so doesnt mean that the Sports League wont be in. How biased is that evo fan boy at the end. I saw the PSM3 on the shelf in Morrisons earlier. Has anybody read it and did they give it a score?

So the reviewer gives the game a 9/10 and then says it's still not a PES-beater?
Is he going to give 10/10 to a game he has not reviewed yet?

Not the reviewer, Ben Wilson who had the second opinion. The reviewer said PES had some catching up to do.

Ah, I see.
It will be interesting to see what PES 2009 gets.

the actual reviewer says that pes has to play catch up now. It was Ben Wilson who is obviously deluded said pro was the better game.

Oops i just read writing that will teach me but still my thoughts on PES still stand.

Well knowing PSM3 they will naturally give PES2009 a 10 no matter how good/bad it is - they will have to give it a higher score than Fifa 09 because they are one of the sponsors in the PES series.

I can't believe he gave Fifa '08 a 6/10 - How can anybody take that guy seriously again? He still trys to justify it aswell

i suppose it just goes to show that even the proffesional games reviewers have massive different opinions to each other as well as us players so the proof will be when we get to play it ourselves. The only concern i have now is that this game cannot possibly live up to the hype now created. Im not going to expect a game without any flaws thats for sure. Hope ppl keep that in mind.

He gave it a 6/10 just because he didn't like the shooting and you couldn't beat a man without using skills.
We all know that is crap. Shooting on 08 is decent, especially using finesse shots. It is a bit balloony, but not as bad as he makes out. In PES 08 you could score from range with star players with ease.
Secondly, you can beat a man easily in 08. Maybe a little too easily, as you can run straight past defenders in the right situation. In PES 08 you could skip past a whole team.
So, to mark a game down to a 6 based on these untruths is wrong. Let's face it, PES2008 was pretty much a broken game, yet they still scored it higher for some reason.
I swear that I don't see it in jjoseca's post, even though I'd assume that it would be there because of the posts.
Still, I found it somewhere else.
Thanks anyway! Looking forward to the demo.

That 2nd opinion guy is ajoke! 6/10 for fifa 08? LOL! There will be people who, no matter how disappointed they are deep down inside with PES, will give it 9's. Deep down they are hurting but cannot let their emotions show, then they rate each PES iteration as "the best", and so on. It's quite pathetic. I played both PES 2008 and Fifa 2008 and rate PES a 6/10 and Fifa an 8.3/10. I predicted 9's for Fifa 2009 and so far, so good. There will be some who give it obvious biased reviews (ign, which I predict will give it from a 7.5 - 8.0).
Anyway, Im waiting till the day that Konami burn a copy of Atari 5200 soccer and package that as PES 2010. Then you'd hear all the "it's amazing" reviews. LOL! Some people are a riot.

Yeah, some people know how big a PES fan boy i've been on these and the other forums around for about 8 years now, but you can't really argue with how good Fifa is right now.
Fifa 08 was noticeably better than PES 2008, and it looks like Fifa is only getting better.
I want PES to step it's game up, but it doesn't seem that likely right now.

i agree. these ppl would earn respect for actually telling the truth but instead they tarnish their and their mags reputations by giving this biased and propaganda rubbish. Im not a fifa or evo fan boy. I play whats the best out there and recently that has been pro, most would agree but the past 12 months there has been a universal switch by most. I switched with euro 2008 whicch im still enjoying and from everything i have gathered, fifa09 is going to be, by far the best footie game ever produced.

It's true - It could all feel shit when we actually play it.
But reviews like the one scanned above and what other people have been saying leaves me with good hopes :DD
Fingers crossed It is all as good as people have been saying.
As long as the flaws aint like a certain way to round the goalie or a certain angle and you will score then it should be ok
them and bad touches from defenders who control it 10 miles away from them and get robbed of the ball

there is no doubt this is going to be a great game. But it wont be perfect. I can live with that. I keep thinking what it is gonna feel like when i load this bad boy up for the first time, go to team select and choose Arsenal Vs Spurs. Then see the teams walk out on the Emirates. Come on EA, release this sucker early....i dare you!
