what will happen if you have all the up to date stats while i don and we play eachother?

That's the question I immediately asked as well ;) Suff is asking EA.

I reckon it'll use an online and offline database.

I ain't paying for shit. I'm happy enough to play with what I'm given at launch. Used to that so not a biggy for me.
I generally play online so can't see it being taken into account there anyway. How can it if some people choose to use it and others don't?

The paid stats will be applied for both surely, obviously you can't have both, and the guy who's paid needs to get what he paid for, plus it acts as an advertisement to the other guy who thinks "maybe I should pay for those stats"...

Not sure if I will be paying for it but it's something I was really looking forward to, my favourite moment of the week is watching Match of the Day and playing FIFA immediately afterwards, it would add a whole new level for me...

Hopefully not many will pay for it so they will either A) offer it free at some point or B) not offer it at all.

20 August 08, 14:33
I'll be playing on-line almost exlcusively so I'll be interested to see how this unfolds. I won't be paying for some bods opinion of whose stats should go up/down on any given week. I can understand why some people would want that, but not at a fee.

If this causes a fracture in the on-line play (ie. you can only play against those with the same stat file, thus creating a 2-tier system of the haves and have-nots), then they'll immediately be putting at risk the best (only good) part of their game.

They're getting as good as Konami at breaking anything good they build.

winston
20 August 08, 14:41
I might add that, given the stats in FIFA have such a negligible effect on how each player actually plays, they have a heck of a nerve asking for money for updates that are subjective and essentially meaningless. They've really struck me on my cynical chord.

Then they'll immediately be putting at risk the best (only good) part of their game.

I don't agree 100% here with you winston. To me the best is offline multiplayer and specifically the controls, being the best sports game controls I've played to date, (Haven't played any NHL in the last years) even if they could be even better with 32 direction control of running and aiming, to say something.

It's sad that they can't seem to nail the game on next gen consoles, when the PS2 versions were so bloody good.

Is there a subscription for this update stuff in NHL or NBA?
Haven't heard of there being one but haven't really looked into it.
Must say i am very surprised at this. EA must know that this will be extremely unpopular and at a time when they really could totally corner the football market this just strikes me as an absurd decision.

yup - if they gave us the ps2 versions with better graphics id be happy - i dont mind editing all the data myself (or downloading a save file).

Just had a thought, is there anything to stop PS3 users from just downloading someones roster with the updated stats? PS3 users can use other save files anyway, and this could be a workaround for it all to be updated.

Only if EA lock the save files to your system like they do with rockband - im guessing the roster update will be done on a seperate save file though like the 'myteams' saves and that will be locked to the system/psn.

but that's just a guess

Milanista
20 August 08, 15:42
If the keepers are like 08, it will remove so much from the experience. Its just annoying when you know you can't score certain goals due to goalies ALWAYS saving in those positions or you always scoring because you know the goalie will never save certain shots.

20 August 08, 15:51
Any1 seen any good info about set pieces? Just curious since those have been quite shit in both FIFA and PES series. PES series at least tryed something new last addition(with ability to push some players up in corners). Since set pieces are one of the most important situations in whole game nowadays they should REALLY make them a lot better. You should be able to at least pick players to go up in corners/free kicks, etc.

Something confuses me about that article:

Gamers with Xbox Live or PSN subscriptions will have access to one league of their choice for a free trial from the moment they activate it to the end of the 2008-2009 season.

That would suggest I can choose one league and get free updates all the way through the season, with additional league updates costing money.

If that's the case, I would be over the moon, because I would only want the English league updating anyway! But surely they wouldn't do that, because very few would want more than one league surely when you can settle for one league being updated, for free?

(Unless they mean one division, rather than one league/country, in which case I'd still be okay with it - Premier League for me, I could do Tranmere's changes myself and they are the only team I'd be arsed about below the top-flight)

There's a few theories at the moment...

A) The downloadable databases will only apply online

B) You'll be able to choose between the starting database, with no injuries, and the downloadable one - e.g. when starting a manager mode you don't want your key player injured

C) The updates won't actually make the players injured, it will just move them to the reserves

The free trial is for ONE LEAGUE, not one country!

Yeah, you can choose one of the top leagues (as they are the only ones that get updated) and that gets updated for free. Extra leagues cost money.

Thats fine by me, more curious to see which elements of single player get effected by it tbh. But like winston said, the majority of stats dont have a big effect on players anyway (nowhere near pes) so its unlikely we will see a big difference.

Ok so, I haven't bought a FIFA since the 2001 JP version on PS2 and I got a newbie question for you guys: how are the J.League and K.League handled by Electronic Arts, license-wise?

I'm aware of the fact Konami and partially SEGA got a patriotic stranglehold on the virtual counterparts of both J.League teams and Japan NT brands, notwithstanding I was wondering if the teams and players licenses picked singularly were already in the game or if they were replaced with fake ones or simply not there.

also, has there been someone who has patched this lack of Japanese football during the past years and will it be possible to download a potential patch to fix my thirst of J.League in the imminent PS3 version?

I really don't want to buy this year's Winning Eleven/PES, it looks like shit compared to FIFA and it's really a crucial information for me because as weird as it might sound, I don't seem to enjoy any football game unless there's a bit of J.League in it. :D

1st Impressions

My 1st impressions were muted the arena was set as the same one found in fifa 08 so to pretty much everyone by looking at it, it felt like exactly the same game that was of course until you started taking shots and started turning in the arena with players, players felt less weighted and seemed like they could turn and react to the positioning of their bodies much quicker you only get a slight feel of what the game will be like due to the 3rd person camera angle given to you.

Gameplay

I honestly don't know what to say here as I feel I should be breaking it down into all the aspects that make the gameplay what it is so that is what I will do the game is alot more fluid and you feel you can string passes now if you are using Man utd for example in fifa 08 it felt very congested at times when you had the ball. Now you feel like you have more time on the ball and space which is excellent as sometimes in Euro 2008 it felt like your players wouldn't pass quick enough so this little bit of added space makes the game less frustrating than Euro 2008.

Passing

Passing I had it set as semi the whole time I played the game the passing was a mix or euro 2008 and fifa 08 at times you felt you could play a good passing game and other times the players just weren't hitting the passes as accurately as they should have been this was due to been pressed by the opposition and this makes a massive difference on the accurracy of the passing although a bit over the top for my liking. For example if you are playing an opponent who likes to sit back and defend your players seem to be able to pass it around them all night long and it seems this build up some hidden confidence bar as they really get passes on target and I had my passing percentages around 85% however when players started to pressure me I seemed to lose that bit of responsiveness and passes where alot less accurate and it felt like I was no longer using Arsenal/Chelsea who are able to string passes even under intense pressure. My passing percentage took a massive hit back to 60%. Although I did find this realistic I also found it annoying as it means noobs can just team press and your players react worse to tight situations when they should infact be more responsive!

Dribbling/Skill

One of my favourite parts of the game like fifa 08 but now this is way more responsive by that I mean not when you are using the trick stick but when you are doing 45 degree and 90 degree turns its alot more intricate and players can shimmy through players alot easier than ever before this is important as when you use Messi for example it is alot easier to go round players without having to introduce the physical aspect of the game as you can leave players for dead without the need for the skill tick (Last year in fifa 08 I heavily depended on the Lane Change skill move to dribble with players or other trick sticks) this is no longer the case and you can now mix it up with tricks and close ball control which Is somethign that was so good in the Pro Evo games it finally is in FIFA!

Crossing/Heading

This section will be quite brief as I didn't get that many chances to try out the crossing variation as it takes a good couple of days to see if this has been improved or is as glitched as previous games. Standard Crosses in the box are no more accurate and can be giving a bit more curl which is good but it was alot more noticable from set pieces and corners the amount of curl was evident in the situations compared to in game.

Headers are alot more like Euro 2008 if you are open or win the header you now feel like you can score and when you aim (semi again for shooting/heading) is where the header ends up whether that be 10 foot over the bar or the bottom corner it goes where you aimed it unlike fifa 08. Where the ball would often decide its own path to goal if you were not aiming down the middle of the goal. You can now pick your spot I scored 3 headers with Berbatov and a couple with within the games I played and managed to pick out the bottom corners 3 times and the other 2 were unmarked headers where I had all the time in the world to produce an excellent bullet header! I am happy to say this part of the game is much improved however felt a tad easy but could also be down to the players traits and abilities:) I had at my disposal. Expect alot more goals from headers in fifa 09

Tackling/Collision system
By far one of the best additions to the game you can honestly feel the physicality of certain players when you have control of them and is a massive counter against quick players as I focused on Defence and always used Inter Milan in FIFA 08 this is the team I noticed how useful the tackling/collision system is with certain teams. I had Maicon Materazzi Samuel and Chivu in defence with Vieira and Muntari as DM's (the teams were upto date atleast for transfer a few weeks back) and I was up against Man Utd my opponent set Ronaldo as a ST with Rooney and Nani and Saha on the wings I knew this was either going to make or break the game for me as if he could just tear me apart as much as he could in 08 I would have been disappointed not because it was easy but because players would always get bullshit deflections go back to players like Ronaldo time and time again in FIFA 08 (I am sure fifa players know what I mean)

anyway the game started and he piled on the pressure early on and was always looking for Ronaldo I had materazzi square up to him but with Ronaldo's close ball control he managed to round me without the use for the skill move he was through on goal but here comes Samuel coming in from an angle not right infront of him I just ran into Ronaldo with a push of LB + A to try and win the ball and samuel bardges straight in with his elbow and ronaldo is shrugged off the ball he doesn't roll over he is just moved 3 yards and is off balance and I win possesion off the ball with Samuel who is quicker than Materazzi and was able to recover! the situation for me. This happened several times but it seems if you square up to Ronaldo you are asking for trouble as 8/10 he will beat you you have to come at him from the sides where a players strength can make more of an impact and you will be more succesful with tackles with highly skillful/strong/ quick players which is good as you feel you can still beat defenders with players who are good in 1v1 situations however if I had not been good with the jockey button he could have scored on several occasions sorry noobs you will get trounced by Ronaldo whores :)

It really is hard to explain the collision system I TRIED to as best as I could but don't think I have done it any justice at all this is definetlty a top 3 addition to the game

Custom Formations

one of the biggest addition to the game is the ability to change your formations yes it was in last year but not to the depth of this years version I will explain. You can now use this online and set 4 formations for use in game like Pro Evo did so wonderfully well but theres also 1 more addition player roaming you can set which areas of the field each of your players either risk going into or strictly stay in so if you want your wingbacks to stay back the whole game and provide no attacking width/assitance and only mark Robinho/Robben you can do so.

If you want Gerrard and Lampard to roam incase theres a luck bounce you can do so this was easy to notice also! for example I had 4-2-4 formation but I wanted my wing backs to push forward and my Defensive midfielders to cover the space left by each wing back when I lost the ball and my wing backs where in my attacking 3rd what did I see I saw Cambiasso and Vieira occupying the Left back and Right Back positions I thought this was a great addition to the dynamic of the game as player arrows never did thier job in pes and previous fifa aswell as they should have.

Now you feel like you are the manager of your team and decide what you players do in the game of course I could have also had vieira and cambiasso attacking like CAM and putting immesne pressure on my opponents but defence is the most importing part of winning in fifa as far as I am concerned! this is a massive addition to the game and those who use it right will have massive winning percentages aswell as having an impact on what the A.I does there were a few occasions when vieira and cambiasso were not in position however and were occupying their DM roles but if this is something that is not totally perfected it is still an interesting addidition that can be improved on in the future! it is still a very useful form of attacking/defending without losing one...
Sliders
brief as I only changed this one or two times I can see this been used in the last 20 minutes of games when you need to pile on the pressure on your opponent with the mix of custom formations! as I didn't really find it that important but you could definetly see every one push up when I put chance creation all the way up but expect to be countered very easily if you dare turn up all the sliders :)

Goal Keepers
This is the thing many people were worried about and from my experience they have reason to be worried but only a little bit it all depends on what goalkeepers you choose and have at your disposal once again player ratings will be massive most especially for keepers. I used spurs and they still had Robinson and he wasn't that good he was pretty much a euro 2008 goal keeper and could still be beaten near post and with finesse shots from 25 yards. But when I had Julio Cesar of Inter in goal and Cech people were regularly missing 1v1 and it really felt like every 1v1 was a 50/50 situation Cech even made the most miraculous save I have ever seen Rooney blasted the ball and it hit the cross bar and bounced on the line Ronaldo was coming in for the tab in Cech was on the floor Ronaldo was closing in and what do I see, I see Cech scramble across goal on his knees and just punch it away before Ronaldo gets there this was probably the most exciting thing I saw all day as Goal keepers actually had a life like animation for that situation I had never ever seen before in fifa game or any sports game for that matter. Cech could also deal with Long Range shots well but definetly had a weakness from Crosses and Corners and was often caught napping in these situations on a few occasions he came out to catch the ball and didn't get there in time reminding me of many a David James howler! my advice pick a team with a keeeper rated 82 or more if you below this you will be letting in some shitty goals! sorry for those of you who like to use your mid table teams you could be getting screwed over and it seems the attention was focued on the top keepers having all the key animations and life saving saves and reaction times.

Shooting

one of the most important aspects of a football game and I think FIFA 09 has got this about spot on the ball feels alot less floaty now and shots now have a slight increase in accuracy from Distance the power in shots is also a lot more noticable I scored a couple of scorchers with real venom with Adriano and Drogba and some long range goals with power in the bottom corners (not possible in fifa 08) the curl and power in shots is now alot more realistic another thing I find hard to explain but many people will love this!! you can actually feel and see the power in shots now and thats basically the only way I can summarise it.

The response times in shooting is spot on and I have no issues with it.

A.I/Player Movement/turning Super Cancel/player reactions

The best and Worst of the game is in this section A.I is exactly the same as 08 to me and you are forced to use the player roaming feature I explained in custom formations to actually give them some artificial intelligence worth having! ea really should have set player roaming charachteristics the real players have.. atleast for top leagues but its not that big an issue once you have your preferences set I suppose.

Player movements in attacking areas are pretty good once you start tapping the LT button to trigger your team mates to go on runs and seeing them call for the ball is a very good visual aid as many previews stated you now feel like players are reacting to situations realistically. Player turning has improved and along with what I detailed in the dribbling section people should have no complain with responsiveness in this area! player do what you want when you flick your analog stick and with closer touches that also increases the responsiveness!

Super Cancel is improved guys you can finally get your strikers out of railed runs and running towards the ball at full speed more times than not there are still times when they just stand there and you are annoyed you have to react within the 1st second or so or you lose that opportunity I can only hope it is tweaked a bit more but its definetly improved and should be less frustrating for those who like to use this like me.

player reactions let me explain when you do a shite pass are greedy with the ball take a stupid shot players will react to these situations and it is great to see! you will constantly see Ibrahimovic and Berbatov moan when delivery is not perfect just like their real life counterparts!

I have missed out a couple of things like how player traits/player ratings affect the game!.

if you have any questions I may have failed detail due to my article been a mini rushed job please ask

sorry guys I can't bold up my titles can a mod do this for me bloody bypass proxy!

Sounds really good, my only concern on reading that is the goalkeepers. It sounds bad - all I wanted to see changed was the ability to score from realistic angles where before the keeper would have it covered 100% of the time, no matter what.

Thank you so much sweetkilla, you're a credit to Evo-Web!

Sweetkilla, I know most will lambast me but the nets look quite good in some shots, are they a little better in your opinion??

What about free-kicks and corners are they better??

Thanks

yeah its hard to explain the goal keepers as well as certain other things it is definetly more realsitic and more 50/50 based though as you will find out when you get to play it.

It will really be I scored 1 missed 1 kinda game which is better than som1 scoring 4 of the same goals :)

thanks for highlighting things I forgot to comment on yes turning is much better

The nets are a slight improvement a bit more reaction from the nets but it won't please those who want football kingdom nets that is for certain.

Free Kicks are the same as fifa 08 just with the addition of the second player and now you can actually hit a powered free kick into the top corners and over the walls (with power)

there is certainly more ball swerve those with specific players like C.Ronaldo

Sweetkilla, thanks for your impression mate, real good job.

In FIFA/EURO08 they are very slow, and pressing the rush button or not is almost the same...

FIWC is "FIFA Interactive World Cup", the hardcore geeks play against eachother to qualify for the "real thing", it's a competition where the best gamers play eachother for a chance to win money - IF you qualify, and only the best of the best qualify.

It's only for the hardcore glitch-loving nerds. ;)

The kits some of them were updated some were not and ok here is the worst bit guys they still had the EA logo's on them! I will actually cry if they are in the final game.. I had to use the replay function to notice it but still!

the PS3 exclusive feature is basically a FIFA/EA/ (Sony Sponsored) tournament where everyone on the ps3 tries to qualify for one of the 32 spots to get a free trip to where ever the final is spain/japan for example then play fifa 09 and try and win $20,000 for their efforts over 6-9 months :)

One thing that infuriated me was when a ball was played along the six yard box and the keeper would just follow the line rather than grab it.This often left for some v easy ta-ins and very unrealistic.

Did you notice any examples of this??

thanks

sweetkilla
20 August 08, 19:48
I am afraid there were numerous examples of that but players can miss alot more open goal opportunities it seems to have more of that pes factor I talked about so sometimes the player skies it for no reason and the goalies are better at saving them however it is still there just not as effective as it was in 08 but will still be abused

Would have two questions:

1)Can you set which players are up in corners or anything like that? Or is it still just offensive players and CB's sitting back in your own half.

2)Minor issue, but does left footed GK's start play with their right foot(when having ball in their hands that's)? Like Cech, Julio Cesar, Casillas, etc. did in FIFA 08.

did he have a different free kick stance? (if you saw it).

can you use jut LT to dribble expertly with the players that are good at dribbling? (aaron lennon, dos santos etc)

nice write-up btw.

this is the best bit!

Rooney blasted the ball and it hit the cross bar and bounced on the line Ronaldo was coming in for the tab in Cech was on the floor Ronaldo was closing in and what do I see, I see Cech scramble across goal on his knees and just punch it away before Ronaldo gets there this was probably the most exciting thing I saw all day as Goal keepers actually had a life like animation for that situation I had never ever seen before in fifa game or any sports game for that matter.

Berbatov had better control 100% but it was more about the close touch dribbling of the better players there was no need for skill moves with the top players as you could just shimmy with the ball :) if you are using the left analog stick and changing direction quickly this will be a new effective way of dribbling

Free kick stances were pretty similar except for Juninho and C.Ronaldo and Lampard

Q: What happens to seriously injured or suspended players?
When players are seriously injured, they may get a poor or bad form rating to reflect the fact they aren’t able to play up to their rating in the database. We are not making players unavailable due to suspension or injury for the service this year.

Err yes I know, I think they have to be... ;))

The whole reason of having it is to make it realistic, to mirror real life, you can't then pick and choose what you add or don't, at the very least have an override option!...

INFO ON LIVE SEASON

2008-08-20
FIFA 09 Live Season Q&A Q: What is adidas Live Season?
adidas Live Season is a premium service for FIFA 09 PS3, Xbox 360 and PC that will update in-game player form each and every week. The service will run from the launch of the game to the end of the 08/09 season and is based on how real players performed in the most recent real-world matches. FIFA 09 will feel different every week throughout the entire season matching the weekly rhythm of football.

Q: Which leagues are included?
Barclay’s Premier League, La Liga BBVA, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, Serie A and Mexican Primera Division.

Q: Why aren’t all leagues of FIFA 09 included?
This is the first year of the service and a completely unique feature that has never been attempted before for football videogames. As a result, we made a decision to provide the best service by limiting the service to the six leagues that have the biggest global reach that match the same lifecycle of FIFA 09. This enables us to provide the best possible service, and effectively anticipate and manage any unknown variables that might appear with a new online service of this scope and size.

Q: How much will your charge for the Live Season service?
We’ll be announcing the costs nearer to the launch of FIFA 09 this fall. However, we are going to be giving everyone who buys FIFA 09 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC a free trial of one league of their choice from the moment they activate it to the end of the 08/09 season.

Q: What stats will change on a weekly basis?
The only data that changes on a weekly basis is the form of a player. No other data will be changed weekly; we will however be making adjustments to the data with the ‘Day 1’ update and the winter update where necessary based on player performances.

On a weekly basis, players will be assigned a “player form” rating, which can be one of five ratings: bad, poor, neutral (no change), good, and excellent. For the four non-neutral form settings, we update a variety of that player’s attributes based on what position the player plays and what form setting they were assigned. Form is relative to how players are rated in our player database.

Q: When does the form get released?
The update will be available every Wednesday. The exact time of the upload will be decided in the near future.

Q: How will that affect players and gameplay?
Players who are assigned non-neutral form will feel different as their actual attributes will be changed. Form affects various skills and mental attributes depending on the player’s position. Players on excellent form will feel better, more skilled in-game. The opposite goes for players on bad or poor form.

Q: How high and how low will individual players’s overall rating climb or fall?
This depends on what player form setting the player is assigned and what their attributes are set to in the database. A player who is rated 60 overall in the database and receives an “excellent” form rating will increase a lot (up to 70 or more), compared to a superstar who is rated 90 overall in our database, who would only increase to 92 or 93 on “excellent” form.

Q: Who decides on how the stats are changed?
We have a global network of football experts who work with us every year to make sure the FIFA franchise includes the most accurate player and team data. This same team of passionate experts monitor every player in the Live Season leagues to supply in-depth data each week.

Q: What happens to seriously injured or suspended players?
When players are seriously injured, they may get a poor or bad form rating to reflect the fact they aren’t able to play up to their rating in the database. We are not making players unavailable due to suspension or injury for the service this year.

Q: Can I turn the service off if I don’t want to play with the weekly data?
Gamers are free to turn off the service whenever they want: online or offline.

Q: Can I simply reset the service and get back to the stats from the start of the season?
Yes, you can reset your squads back to the same way when you first played the game. You can decide whether you want to play with the latest form, or with the default player database: offline and online. It’s your choice each time you play.

Q: Can I play against a player that doesn’t subscribe to this service?
In online matches, a gamer with Live Season can play against a gamer who doesn’t have Live Season but only the subscriber will be able to use the data for his team.

Q: Will gamers playing online be awarded additional points for playing with a Live Season team against and a gamer who plays with the default team, where that team is higher rated?
Not this year, something to look at for the future.

Q: How long will that service last?
Live Season is a premium service that will run from game launch until the end of the 08/09 seasons.

Q: What will happen next year?
We have a number of ideas we’re working on, we just can’t tell you about them now.

Q: Why is adidas the sponsor and what where the costs involved for adidas?
When we originally conceived the idea of Live Season we knew that we were taking football authenticity in videogames to the next level. We wanted to partner with a company who matched our own ambitions within the sport and who are also on the cutting edge of development of football products.

adidas are a truly global company and the foremost football brand for apparel and equipment. EA SPORTS™ is the leading football videogame brand delivering an interactive experience that enables gamers around the world to live out their dreams virtually and play with their favourite teams and players. The association offers both companies the opportunity to leverage a mutual passion for football and the desire to bring new, unique experiences to the consumer.

We are unable to disclose the details of the agreement between adidas and EA.

Q: Is Live Season similar to Dynamic DNA
While the concept is essentially the same, the execution of both features is very different. Please see NBA Live 09 literature for more information on Dynamic DNA.

such as stopping an attackers scripted run after the ball while he is in an offside position

cheers

yeah supercancel is more effective and players respond to it alot more but not everytime

And the dummy move I mean been able to let the ball go through your legs and I don't know exactly I am afraid I will be looking at the controller config today and report back :)

sweetkilla I have a question about the shooting that hopefully you may have come across while playing. Can you really hit volleys sweetley in Fifa09? For example connecting really well with the ball and getting some real power in them, I never did like the feel of the first time shots in Fifa08.
thanks

Yes you can this is an aspect of the game that has been improved of course you still need to time it to perfection but when you do this time you really do get power and accurracy behind it, which was few and far between in fifa 08 that is no longer the case I am happy to say!

sweetkilla
21 August 08, 06:05
If people want that I guess I will give pes 2009 a couple of hours of my time :) and make a comparison article too, lol which I am sure will open up debate war lol

it is very different to Euro 2008 as far as I am concerned I didn't like the game at all I played over 200 games on it but 150 of them been on Captain your country says it all really. They took all the things I loved from fifa 08 long range shots/goals and fluidity in passing etc it was more responsive but parts of the game felt broken and I honestly preffered pes6 on the 360 to Euro 2008... they really did take all the fun out of the game!

I dunno why I just didn't like it. FIFA 09 is really alot more like 08.

Matk
21 August 08, 06:17
Great - thanks for that sweetkilla - Euro 2008 had something missing (besides clubs), cant quite put my finger on it. I can see a comparison article getting a lot of attention and debate going but hopefully all in good spirit and heart.

Quick random thought about EA stopping us saving our replays.

They want us to have to upload them to EASW for their own marketing purposes. I assume they're fearful that if we saved them to our HDDs then we wouldn't need EASW and wouldn't upload them.

But if you want to show off you replays - which would probably be why you saved it in the first place - you'd either cap the footage with a cap card or upload them to EASW.

If they're blocking us saving to the HDD to block people with cap cards - well... if they have cap cards they'll be able to record it as they scored the goal anyway?

So all they are really doing is pissing off the fans who cant record their own footage.

What the hell is the point of that?

God knows, but EASW stopped working for me on F08 ages ago. Wouldn't upload anything at all. And my login never worked on the site either.

Plus the fact for whatever reason, it stopped recording my online stats after 20 games...

These people are bound to be playing on all assisted controls, so I can't imagine just how realistic and fun it is going to be when it is all manual, giving you the freedom to do whatever you want :)).

I remember mr. rutter saying something along the lines of "next year". This year they got Fifa08 and actually listened to the community to fix the gameplay faults (it's still not perfect, but looks to be a valiant effort).

I really hope they can rejuvenate management mode. It's a mode that is just begging for some TLC.

for example, for big games they could get some sky sports style hype before them. Starwars (new episode) theme tune over the tannoy? mascot costume. players holding some lucky kids hand on the way out the tunnel?

and that's only the visual side. what about finals at Wembley and semi's at Cardiff? what about injuries? etc etc

One thing that is irritating the hell out of me, if a player picks up a knock, picks himself up off the floor and has the + sign next to his name surely he should be hobbling a little and trying to shake it off.

Yet we still see players running as if nothing ever happened?

I even think they should include a feature where if the player tries to run it off and cant shake it off (ie. strains, hamstring pulls etc.) there should be an option that flashes up in a dead ball sitution to subsitute him.

The realism of an injured player would feel so much better.

I am here until Saturday so 2 more days of fifa :)

my fave moment today was my goal on www.eafootballworld.com the 5th goal where Ronaldo stretched for the ball and managed to get it before anyone else and poke it in!

and the nets are different from ground to ground not the design but the actual strength or weakness of the net

Ah but that was yesterday (Day 1) but will let you off :-pp ye was good stretch really like new animations like this.

I got a couple of PM questions about why there are no licenses on certain kits sorry I don't know the answer to that my only guess is they are getting added now on the main build...

I read somewhere that is was on kits that advertised betting companies which is prohibited in Germany...

i take it you don't know anymore about the bap player creation offline and then taking him online, like nhl and nba?

any hint of it?

are we likely to have any more announcements or is that it?

cheers

All I got told was EA Sports League should be in the game but you would be using real life pro's and that was from a journalist I was playing with so sketchy atm!

For the most part I am happy. But watching these video's I notice something which I think should be allot more focus on. It is the way passes are received. In real life football it takes allot of skill to control a fast paced pass, or a high ball. Whereas in FIFA(or WE for that matter) players control almost every pass instantly, no matter the pace or the height.

Receiving a pass should take a certain amount of timing and positioning, especially when under pressure. If made so, the whole game would become miles more realistic. The same goes for direct pass; the more difficult the pass is to control, all the more crucial will be the timing when performing a one-touch pass. When you do not master the timing, balls will bounce of your feet more easily while one touch passes will go wrong in many ways. They might go to soft or too hard, perhaps under your feet and other times the direction is just off.

When you want to control the ball you might want to choose for a close or long control. So in some cases a bad control is a good one, and visa versa. Naturally, when a player has bad first control, like Babel for instance, timing will do only so much when you want to control a fast ball very close to you. The defender can react to this by stepping in, also depending on timing. So instead of trying to intercept the pass or cover your zone, as a defender you have some middle ground where you can wait for the pass to be received and then get in.
On the other hand, with the right timing, tapping the run button after a bad reception might give Babel just enough momentum to still get the ball under his control.

This fierce battle in the first two/three second when in possession, a battle I experience time and again on the pitch, I have yet not seen successfully translated to any football game.

It is the cause that the gamespeed can never feel quite right. It is the cause that the ball does not feel loose. It is the cause that you can button smash your way to the goal. It is the reason why their NBA/NHL/NFL games are better in their field.

So no matter how difficult to program, it is crucial and if they can pull it off for FIFA10, ..and only then, they have got a winner.

Thanks for you extensive review of the game.

The tactical side of the game sounds like it could be quite interesting. Perhaps off-line play will be decent after all.

sweetkilla, I'm assuming you've played both FIFA08 and Euro08. One major problem I had with Euro08 was defending - it was just awful. You couldn't get close to the opposition players (even of the minnows like Faroes) because they'd be scripted to skip away with the ball as soon as you tried to close in. Imo, in gameplay terms, defending did not exist.

Is this significantly improved for FIFA09? From your descriptions of the collision system, it sounds like you were able to get stuck right into Ronaldo, so defending is now a decent part of the gameplay?

Cheers, bud!

sorry PESv that was how fifa 08 was and it made the game so sloppy people want alot more instant control/trapping so they can get on with their next move it may not make it as realistic but it makes it alot less fun when it takes 3-4 touches for the player to take control of the ball and alot more frustrating that was one of my biggest gripes with 08 and afterall with the clubs their using instant control is what you expect from

Chelsea/Man Utd/Barca...

Winston the A.I is as frustrating in FIFA 09 as in Euro 2008 and FIFA 08 you can't win the ball for massive periods at a time as for defending yes the collision system is majorly improved although players do go to ground a little to easily at times I do like it alot!

In FIFA08, the defending trademark was the "run straight into the attacker head on and win the ball everytime" move. Surely everyone knows what I'm talking about? It was ubiquitous, both off-line and on-line. It was just about the main feature of every match. Is it still like that in FIFA09?

Was there any sense of the ball being a more free object, with the you or the AI misplacing passes or passing into space for players to run onto, or is it still a bit of a script-fest with the ball pinging straight from player to player in pixel-perfect fashion, ala PES?

Are you incredibly excited about the release of FIFA09, simply can't wait for it's release, or now that you know how the game feels, are you secretly a little bit uninspired, that it's perhaps not that much better than FIFA08 or Euro08?

sweetkilla
21 August 08, 20:45
yeah the 1st bit your talking about is the jocky straight at the striker that doesn't work as well now and your better off wiping out strikers side on... but the jockey straight at players is still effective as long as their not a skillful player.

The ball is a bit more free but you can still ping passes as its always going to be scripted if you dont set your passing to manual i had it as semi!

I am not incredibly excited but I will be when it comes closer to release atm I am getting to play the game on a daily basis so its just more of enjoying the game day by day and when you have to go back to your hotely you just wanna go back on it!

Cool, although it took you 5 whole minutes to answer that time. What gives? :-pp many thanks again for you time and opinion.

Anyway, having just watched the new PES gameplay videos, all I can say is "thank God for FIFA".

Also, good news to read that the EA have been very sensible with their Live Season feature in that on-line players can still play against each other, even if one has subscribed and the other has not.

Isn't it nice to have a developer that shows common sense as well as innovation, and seems to be in touch with what the buyers want?

If they add the ability to boot/vote off these guys that hang around the lobby in 5v5, refusing to pick a side so we can't start a match, then it will be further evidence of them understanding what is required to make a good on-line experience and a good game.
