It looks worse to release such a buggy update than take an extra day to tidy up though, surely?

i dont know from where u came up with the idea that it was a 1 day solution thing...we really dont know what would take to fix that.

ive learned that in video games development if u think something is easy to do, its problaby more complicated than u think.

yup, i just added one of them and said whatever. it sucks though, theres a bunch of the scrambled stats guys.

Yeah I did the same, it worries me that we'll put in all this effort before starting our manager mode then either 1. the DB is so corrupt MM crashed or 2. in a week or two EA release another update and we have to start all over again :(

I'm taking pics with my phone of all errors I'm seeing to pass on to EA in the hopes they can do something about it, I haven't started a thread on the EA forums as it will all likelihood cause absolute hysteria.

So it's basically cut and paste from UCL with some building on, and it'll be $14.99 if I read that right.

Won't be getting it personally, as I just posted on the EA internal forums "wish instead it was manager mode copied and pasted out of Fifa Manager, I would gladly pay $50 for that easy.........."

Sorry if this has been spoken about elsewhere, but I can't see many appearence updates for players. I don't have access to a decent Internet speed so can't get it. But I was at my mates and players like Rooney and Messi haven't been corrected.

Was this update only for transfers or did EA forget to update certain players?

Thanks

Many players have had their appearances changed, I guess these Rooney and Messi guys aren't too important, I've seen plenty of League 1/Championship teams with improved appearances :)

Apparantly there's been only one change in the Liverpool squad, with Riera going up by two points. I'd have thought the Prem teams would've been adjusted quite well.

Placebo how can I edit all the team formations and save them, you can't edit the defaults...?

You have to edit the default formation, then save as a custom formation, then assign that formation to the team, unfortunately you only have slots for 30 custom formations, so what I've done is edit all Prem teams plus the best of the Championship teams (+ Sheff Utd so the derby is harder), that took up 26 of my slots and I have 4 left over to use for my own tactics :)

A card game? Jesus. :FAIL:

I haven't downloaded the data update yet, these errors that people are seeing are a little off-putting at the moment.

Well I believe I've identified the cause of the ones we're finding by searching for free transfers, it's players that are no longer in the national teams, somehow there's a fragment of them left behind in the DB which is what's showing up when we search for them.

I am still finding more duplicates when I search which is a bit worrying, for example:

If you have any stats on hand (for example of players you expect to have been changed either up/down) I can easily check if anything changed.

And yes you will be fine, I read that everyone has the same ALS free code (it's even being actively shared on the EA forums now), I tested myself and it seems it's 1 use per gamertag, not 1 use only per console.

Jack I have those issues as well with the freezing and music going off whenever anything saves. Do you have the game installed to the hard drive? what hard drive do you have? I believe its to do with the 360 trying to write the save and read all the data for the game at the same time. Im using a 2nd hand 60gb hard drive so maybe its just got poor performance. What hard drive are you using?

Hi guys,

Need to make a rectification. A while earlier I complained about F09's framerate issues. Recently I took the game to my mates house who has a samsung hd ready tv, just like me only a newer type, and there was no difference between HD and scart mode. Bot played very smooth. So it seems that it was my TV all the way around. Not the game, not the hd cable, but the TV. Never knew that was possible. At least now I know why you all ignored my comments :)

The strange thing is I used the free trial for addidas live season and downloaded an update. The stats were different to the online update that you use when playing ranked matches. Eg gallas was 89 online and this als thing was 79. Song was 72 online and als was 69. Vela was 75 online and als was 72. Bent was 74 online als was 84.

This didn't match up to what is the supposed update so I reset all squads and downloaded the latest update option in the als menu. Now the stats do match up. I'm guessing the als thing was the last als update, but the REAL full update you have to download again.

I know this has been touched on before but I can't find the posts referring to it... Can anyone please help me?

I've been playing a co-op manager mode game since November with TT and we're up to our fifth season. Our second game is against Chelsea and no matter what we do (play it, simulate it or start then quit it), the game comes to the "SIMULATING..." screen and crashes the Xbox.

Is there any way around it, anything at all? I vaguely remember someone saying they fixed it by starting the match then quitting it but that hasn't worked, and it's (to put it lightly) fucking annoying! Four months' hard work!

Wow, that really is a revolution. I fear this thread is about to go haywire!! All hail bluechampblogger!!

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I just found these settings this past weekend and FIFA 09 feels like a new game to me. Absolutely LOVE it. This is how the game should have been, in my opinion. I like the ability to actually create build up play and feel good about it. Been playing with some friends and we all agree that it's how the game should be played.

EA doesnt do sliders as well as 2k, i think tis a good idea but somehow they will fuck it up

Agreed, but they try and the ones they implemented for NBA Live this year actually weren't too bad. Heck, all they'd have to do to keep bluchampblogger's settings available is create global sliders for each attribute. Shouldn't be that hard.

It's nice to see that they are listening to the fan feedback in regards to these settings. Here's hoping there's something that we requires a lot less editing in it for us in FIFA 10!

Well I'm not up to the point in my season where I'm meeting teams for the second time (nor have I played any Prem teams in cups), but each time I meet one of the Championship teams I edited (Wolves and Reading being the first two), it shows the name of their edited formation on the pre match screen where it lists their 3 best/worst players, on the left side where it shows the formation underneath it says "Custom 18 442" or whatever, and you can see the CBs are pulled right back to the keeper in the 2d drawing. Plus in the match screens you can see the same thing.

I haven't followed this discussion, but it sounds interesting. Why are you pulling the CB's back? Are you doing this with the top teams aswell (Man Utd, Chelsea etc)? Is it to make the game harder?

Placebo
17 February 09, 13:51
I'm doing it because Fifa09 has waaaaaaaaaay too many 1v1s, it's quite rare for top class defensive lines to be caught so high up out of position that your forward has a 20 yard run on the goalkeeper, usually it only really happens because you're playing a weak, naive team or because it's the last 10 mins and your opponent is attacking all out to get back into the match. But in Fifa09 against the AI you tend to get at least 5 or 6 clear 1v1's in a 2x10 match.

You have to use 1 custom formation slot for every team you edit, as you only have 30? Custom formation slots you're limited in how many teams you can edit, so I did all Premiership teams + 6 of the best Championship teams (+ Sheff Utd so the derby is harder). I play manager mode as Sheffield Wednesday so my primary opponents will be Championship and Premiership sides.

nerf
17 February 09, 13:59
I think that the Defensive Pressure setting in Custom Tactics has an impact on the 'height' of the defensive line. If you reduced that for the CPU teams I'd imagine there'll be less space in behind to run into.

I see. What stadium is that on the pic, Old Trafford at nightime?

Must be my TV color settings but the grass looks very nice and crisp on that 360 pic compared to mine.

We should catch a game or two online tonight mate. I'll be on between 7pm and 9pm Eastern time. Gamertag Flores06.

I think that the Defensive Pressure setting in Custom Tactics has an impact on the 'height' of the defensive line. If you reduced that for the CPU teams I'd imagine there'll be less space in behind to run into.

Possibly, but that also affects their tactical mentality as a whole which I wanted avoid doing as that's the kind of stuff that makes one team play a little differently from another team.

I've played 3 teams I edited now and one thing I found very interesting is that they seem to attack much more aggressively now and in higher numbers than before, obviously it's early days after only 3 matches against edited teams but it's possible that somehow pulling back their 2 CB's gave them some extra "attacking security" or something like that, obviously we need more people to test it over more games but I certainly have struggled far more against the 3 edited teams than against the unedited teams I've played so far.

Guys, you probably said this before but i cant find the answer. Is there any possibility to update offline squads ? Because it seems that the update is only valid at the online.
Do I have to pay the Adidas Season for each season that i want to be with squads up to date ?

Hey Placebo, is moving the CB's all the way back really a solution for 1 on 1's? I usually play online and make backward runs with my defenders to intercept the through balls or prevent the strikers from catching the 1 on 1 chances, so it's not a Huuge problem for me, but it's always nice to know alternatives.

By the way. I've been playing for the past 2 weeks to improve -15 record. It was 5 wins to 20 losses. And finally yesterday I went into the positives with 45 wins and 44 losses. And guess what? My roommate decided to play FIFA online when he can't even use a gamepad correctly (He uses the left thumbstick by pinching it with his thumb and index finger). He lost 17 games in a row and won only once...He would just keep replaying guys that beat him 4-0, 3-1, etc games that he wasn't even close to winning. And he was commending the opponents for being fair and modest by skipping the goals replays and accepting his rematches. He said what matters is that the 2 opponents respect each other. He was thinking about adding them to the friend lists and sending them messages. I just told him maybe they were doing that because they knew you were slim pickings and they were improving their ranks with relative ease. And he said "Well look at the bright side, at least I'm making somebody happy."

Well it's not a "final solution to the 1v1 question" but it's a big improvement, of course I only play manager mode so haven't tested any impact online.

20 February 09, 05:51
I find it especially irritating when playing teams like Man United online, and Scholes does some super pass with his outside and it ends up 1v1 with Ronaldo and the keeper. I get my fair few 1-1's as well, but I try to build my plays up through crossing and one-twos. But when people use teams like United, Barcelona and Spain all they have to do is send a through ball.

AK.Rabona
20 February 09, 07:33
Yep that's what ruins the game. The best way is to chose your defenders and make them run backwards 2-3 steps behind their outmost player and trying to maintain this distance. If you want to apply pressure do it using the pressure2 which gets a nonselected cpu player to run to the player. Once he settles in your half for a couple of seconds the throughball threat dies off anyways and you can go back to applying regular pressure. And also on 1 on 1's or 1 on 2 where you have 1 stopper left make sure not to try and defend using full sprint. If you do it like I told you you should have at least 1 stopper in front of his final striker. If you try to run towards him or his direction a slightly skilled player can cross you pretty comfortably with a few cuts or skills. Instead use your advantageous position to anticipate where he will be going and try to stay in front of him by either walking or strafing. Also while you're maintaining your distance, if he's sprinting you can easily get the ball if you make in a move just when he has kicked the ball forward. And if he's walking you can directly apply pressure to him by holding the button down and sprinting, you dont even have to pick a direction. If you're doing these things even halfway right usually you can neutralize threats since if you have anticipated the through pass and have slowed it down for even 2-3 seconds then your defenders will get back to help you. And as you get better you'll be able to position so well that you'll be picking up the through passes or directly getting the ball from the strikers feet most of the time.

If you're caught 1 on 1 with only the goalie, it's all about timing. A useful technique is committing with the goalie and stopping half a second before the collision. This will close the angle really well and increase your chances of saving the ball. If the guy is doing a full sprint and he has a defender on him going shoulder to shoulder, commit imminently since he has very slight chance to score in such a situation. If you are worrying about lobbing, leave it in the second plan. Lobs have a tendency to go over the post so it is better for you to force a lob than giving a shot at goal. But if the player is walking towards you that's usually a sign to attempt a lob so be aware of that, but goalies tend to step up the line anyways so it's best to commit no matter what unless you're 100% he's gonna lob it.

This is actually just like defending in real life which is a very good thing for the game. What is not like real life is the frequency of these situations. And people who pick Man Unaldo, LiverTORRES, and Barceleto'o kinda ruin it. The good thing is if you make backwards run like I said, you can eliminate the threat and these guys are mostly one trick ponies so you basically have their hand ties as long as you stay focused.

I actually don't even mind losing to people who attempt to play something other than this cheap through pass game or pick other teams than Barcelona or Man United (sometimes Liverpool). I could lose to aguy playing intelligently 5 times ina row and I wouldnt mind playing him 5 more times, becuause that's the beauty of this game when it's played right. I have played games so competitive that my hands were sweating and a slight slip of the joystick could mean a goal for or against me. That is something completely different than when I'm playing some guy who just keeps trying to through pass to Ronaldo or Eto'o or trying to catch me on the counter.

matt1288
20 February 09, 07:41
Thanks for the tips, I also find when I mark Ronaldo, and he never gets the ball they quit when I'm 3-0 up. I can have a great against united and be winning 5-0, or I could be losing the game 3-0. Depends on how I play, but recently I have learned how to mark Ronaldo, with a strong full back (Vargas) from Fiorentina.

I've tested moving the CB's further back and it definitely works.

I've been playing a lot with Real Madrid online recently and 90% of my opponents are Man Utd or Barca and its very satisfying watching my defence take the ball off their forwards on several occasions. It makes some people change their approach mid game and actually try and pass the ball around.

Using a tweaked version of Madrid's default formation (change the team mentality to defensive at KO) I moved Pepe and Cannavaro back a bit and I also moved the LB's starting position back one spot. It also helps playing Marcelo at LB instead of Heinze because he can keep pace with Ronaldo/Messi etc.

I moved Diarra and Gago back one spot and I play Higuian and Huntelaar upfront also

:l2: is great online.

Guys, I am having a blast online with this game. I can't wait for how the next version in September will play. I can't imagine it getting more realistic than it already is. The only thing I see for them to fix would be some player faces/body and tweak the responsiveness a bit more. This game is definately a GEM and really shines online.

Yes, it's true that there are many one-on-one type goals, but this game allows you to play through the wings peppering the ball into the box as well. It also allows for you to build up your play, pass the ball around outside the box, and set up your best shot player for an outside scorcher. This game allows for many styles and gives you lots of freedom.

Yesterday I lost a game with an injury time goal which was just and very realistic. I've also won games in injury time which was an amazing feeling. I've also been a victim of numerous disconnects when leading a game.

I still have a lot more to master and tweak in my gameplay department and player movement. I am getting better and better at turning at the right time with certain agile type players, and have learned to use LT(Jokey Button)to better control my players on/off the ball to my advantage. I've also improved my headers on goal a lot by using the LT at the right time and have managed to score some beauties where I felt in total control of my player.

I play on SEMI shooting, Manual Through ball, Auto Passing, and Semi-Crossing. Works a beauty!

The only thing I really wish this game had, was a full practice mode as PES where I could spend hrs tweaking certain specific areas and skills for online.

If anyone is up for a game tomorrow morning Eastern time, shoot me a private message.

Peace!

Manual passing is much better, but not on-line, unless your opponent also plays manual.

I've tried manual v assisted opponent, and it's far too easy for them, with all their passes being perfectly scripted for them, and far more responsive, as they don;t need to wait for power bars to fill.

It's like trying to play against someone who's been give a 20% speed boost.

Maybe because the camera angle in the match is different to in the arena and that means the directions you move the stick will be different.

just look up fifa09 trick guide on youtube. It doesn't look as spectacular as the one Taddei did.

I think tricks and shots are not as responsive and effective in the game as the arena. In the arena I can do the Ronaldo cut-in and the dribble thing where you hit the ball forward with the opposite heel without any trouble. And my shots almost always are on target. In game, it's another story.

andish2001
23 February 09, 00:21
its not an issue of responsiveness, its simply that the orientation of your player is always different in the game, including after youve done a chop and are at an angle, to do the heel to heel you would need to go up down or whatever it is on that angle.

AK.Rabona
23 February 09, 22:47
What about tips from entering from the wing. When entering into the box from the wing I can hardly create a threat even though I'm so close to the goal. Sometimes I can cross 3 players back to back to get into an angle, and then I'll just R1 shoot in to the opposite angle, but I can't pull off the 2-3 crosses usually. Sometimes I'll end up trying to pass it inside, but the defenders intercept it 99% of the time. A couple of times I triple tapped the cross, which sends a cross from the ground I think (I remember from PES) and scored like that a couple of times, but again not so effecient.

matt1288
24 February 09, 09:14
If you are playing online this is how I always score my headers: (this also works for short strikers, I used Kris Boyd from Rangers to score headers)

Make sure you are using SEMI-CROSSING if you are not using manual already, and when your on the wing make sure you are not sprinting unless you want to do a long curling cross which requires you to hold the R1 button, but when you are playing semi you can also cross from the edge of the box, and near the corner line and hold the R1 button with half meter power and usually a striker will come running in and heads it in.

This personally ALWAYS works for me, I suggest you try using Fiorentina to score many headers / crosses because Gilardino and Mutu always score their headers. I have found on the new FIFA or FIFA in general you cannot really score those triple tap cross button like you could in PES, therefore I have stopped doing those and now I try to cut in near the goal and have a whack at goal.

I've learned in my management mode that the key to good defensive headers is high aggression (my 2 CB's now have 99 aggression to help test this theory), combine that with jumping early, so you press the shoot button maybe half a second before the ball would meet your CB's head, then he meets it in the air (in theory above any opponent), sometimes if you time it wrong your CB will head it on the way down so the ball loops up rather than clearing far out, but this still gives you time to move your defender into a recovery blocking position with super cancel (yes, yes I know SC is not 2xAI friendly ;)))

How can you setup an online game to play 2 vs 2? Me and my friend want to meet online and play together against other people in 2 vs 2. I tried to setup a club but it seems 3 people are needed minimum to play a club match. I hadn't explored this yet and I can't figure how it works.

I gave up single player a month ago and only play online with my friend (very difficult to find good people to play against now and then, specially at the hours I use to play, which is past midnight).

By brushed up on do you mean tweaked? Cos IMO MM fans deserve waaaaaaaaaay more than that, we deserve for MM to be the primary focus for Fifa10, in Fifa09 we're still playing the same MM as 4 years ago, basically Fifa06 on PS2 which is pretty shocking IMO considering this whole "next gen" bollocks. Not just that but Fifa09's manager mode has been made worse than Fifa08's:

1. Edit kit numbers removed.
2. View individual player post match stats removed.
3. XP system completely broken.

The only plus points for Fifa09's MM is that 1. English league playoffs are now in, (but even that's messed up and the final isn't at Wembley :() and 2. Carling/FA Cup finals are now held at Wembley, can't remember if the charity shield is there though? And I'm betting that EFA/ECC finals are just held at the home ground of the finalists?

My personal view is that as absolute minimum we should get all the fixes we've been waiting 4 versions for, ie:

1. Proper injuries

2. AI teams rotate their squads for fatigue

3. AI strengthens their team in the transfer market

4. AI adjusts lineup/kick takers to include new signings if better and to take older players deteriorating into account

5. Variable weather and midweek night matches

6. Finance side of things completely revamped (no more earning 200k per match in League2)

7. Proper transfers and loan marker, no more Beckham to Aldershot Town if you have enough money and improve your negotiator, loans out earn experience, loans in reflect real rules such as short/long term loans and 5 loans allowed (not just 2x1 year loans as current).

8. Swedish/Norwegian teams being allowed back into EFA/ECC, when moving to a new club that qualified for EFA/ECC they don't get "kicked out"

9. Player rating system fixed (how come I can have a forward score 40 goals in a season but he never gets a high enough rating to be in the top20 overall forwards?

10. Team of the season fixed, no more reserves who played only 4 matches being in team of the year, nor Hull/Stoke players being in the Championship team of the year based on their Premiership season.

(I'm probably forgetting a bunch that we've been begging for over the last 3 years of course).

Then on top of those long overdue fixes I want to see stuff like:

1. Each player having personality, no more signing Cronaldo and him being happy to spend 5 years on the bench.

2. Managers being hired/fired, do well in League2 and other clubs around the world will come sniffing around and offer you a new job (even in the middle of a season).

3. Cash injections from new boards, cash haemorrhages by bankrupt sponsors/chairman XL anyone ;)

4. Other leagues around the world have their matches properly simulated so you can scout out which players are scoring/assisting well for example.

5. International management, I know there's not enough national teams to make this a big thing but there's still enough to do some kind of regular friendlies and world cup type tournament with you being able to do a Hiddink (ie manage 5 or 6 different national teams over your career, starting with crap teams like Slovenia and then as you become more respected you can get jobs at good teams like Brazil/Italy etc.)

That's enough for now, but you get the point ;)

Of course if you meant the above under "brushed up on" then I take it all back ;)

Yes, Clubs is 3 players minimum so you can't do it that way. The only way to do it online is set up a BAP 10v10 match, and hope that only 2 other people join and go against you and both pick Any. So basically there is no chance :((.

(no more earning 200k per match in League2)
I'm earning over €250k per match in the Spanish Segunda Division too, it's ridiculous. I selected the lowest sponsorship contract, charge low ticket prices, no facilities upgraded.

I've resorted to in-game crime to alleviate this issue. You see, scouting can be expensive. For example, I can siphon up to as much as €500k by dispatching my scout off on a jolly around Europe 'looking for a new striker'. Even if I happen to suddenly recall him a couple of days later (those pesky emergencies).

So the money slips out of the accounts under the 'scouting' budget, my associate gets fat living in luxurious hotels while putting some expenses aside into an off-shore account for later, and the club's accountants are none the wiser :SHHH:

Don't know if it's possible but can you in any way deliver those named improvements to David Rutter or someone important at EA? You give them information for certain lower league teams, am I right? Maybe you can private message them in the EA Forum or mail it or something?

And maybe give some examples like f.e.:
"proper injuries: concussion = 1 week absence; broken leg = 1 year absence."

Because when looking at the bugs in the existing Manager Mode I don't think they're to bright at EA...

Totally worth trying if you ask me.

EA Sports’ Football World community manager, Romily Broad, has revealed the upcoming FIFA 09 DLC, Ultimate Team, will be priced at 800 / $9.99 US (£7.99). For the uninformed, Ultimate Team is a fantasy soccer management mode that will allow gamers to assemble their fantasy teams by collecting virtual cards in various categories.

Footy fans should take note, this isn’t regular DLC. The content will drop as a mandatory — and free — title update on March 19 (clocking in at about 1.3GB). Gamers will receive a five match trial with the option to shell out for the full version. Mandatory 1.3GB title update?

You've probably tried this but when you check and it says "you already have the latest update", press okay, then wait a few seconds and press again to check.

I don't know if it's just this ISP - surely it isn't - but every single time any Xbox in this house checks for Live Season updates you have to check it twice for the game to "realise" that there is a new update out.

Is there an rss link? I can setup my N95 to automatically download podcasts but I need a URL.

The dirty messages he sends me on Xbox Live don't sound like that. He's put on a special voice. PHONY!

20 mins from the end of the podcast but it's pretty good so far. Offers both positive and negative views on football games, and especially FIFA 09 and highlights what needs to be improved.

Good work CB and Placebo!

Good work CB and Placebo!

Thanks, I actually realised afterwards I really didn't say 1% of what I wanted to cover, apparently not preparing will do that ;) So hopefully will do better next time.

After so many interviews/Q&A's for ArmA/Flashpoint it's really weird to be talking about another game :)

Really glad you enjoyed it guys, thanks for the comments. To be honest I thought my scouse would be a bit too much for podcasting! But I'm glad I got some grievances off my chest anyway, hopefully some of them will get through to EA; that's the whole idea.

I must confess when I heard you say "Accrington Stanley" in my ear I did have a weird craving for milk ;)

"Accrington Stanley Football Club is an English football club from Accrington in Lancashire, in the north-west of England.

The club was formed in 1968, with the town regaining a club with league status after 44 years when they were promoted as champions of the Nationwide Conference on 15 April 2006.[1]

The club has been owned by Chairman Eric Whalley since the mid 1990s and employs Robert Heys, who joined the club in 2002, as Chief Executive."
