Ha! Thats quality - nice one :)
In all seriousness though, surely thats one of the next things for developers to get into games now refs are the norm. Licensed refs in FIFA 2010 would be cool and add to the immersive experience.
Just imagine getting your team to the playoff final at Wembley to see that the ref is Rob Styles...

And another rumour I read was that someone got to the playoff final and it was at Ivy Lane not Wembley :(
Hmm seems this is already confirmed, just read this in a Fifa09 thread of an Owls forum "Also when i got to the play off final it wasn't at Wembley. It was a different place. But still quite big." So they put in neutral venues but not the right ones? That's a bit weird.
Is that actually your appearance/likeness?
Well it doesn't look like me, it's the equivalent of a generic lower league footballer ;) We were told to create ourselves in the EA database so you choose from one of 131 different premade heads, one from 97 hairstyles etc. etc.

Well yes it would be nice if refs are fully licensed, but personally I think there are far more important things to spend their limited budget on, we may think they have limitless resources every year but in truth the dev team is given a budget and they have to adhere to it, licensed refs could mean no licensed South American league or something, which offers more? To me 1 extra league (for example) offers far, far more than licensed refs :)

Is MM different enough from last years to bother with?
I did 13 seasons playing every game last year and really enjoyed playing as Cardiff and taking them to the top. But the annoyances like being stuck in that shitty stadium even at cup finals just ruined the experience. Have they changed enough of it this year so its worth having a go at it again?

Just played som BAP Season and the fucking rating meter bugged out completely. I could only get minus ratings so it just keeped dropping even when I assisted to a goal! Then for maybe 5 ingame minutes it worked again so I got plus marks for passes, josteling and so on. The cpu scored and it was broken again for the rest of the game. Ended up with a 6 rating when it should have been around 9. Going to write about this in official board. This is not the first time this happens to me but it's the first time it is almost the whole game... ruins the BAPS mode for me because you need the ratings do advance. I mean how the fuck can they not notice this when they test the game.
Edit: More people have reported this bug... amazing...

Well it mostly is, some little additions:
Playoffs added.
Experience system improved (players who play well in a match get more XP than someone who comes on as a sub and gets sent off for example, the latter will get -XP points).
Not sure what else because I'm still waiting for my promo copy to arrive......

Seems random.
When you have a high score, like 9, then it takes more passes and so on to register, this is good and how it should work. But then sometimes it just bug out and nothing is rewarded for. I hope EA figure it out soon so they can patch it...

OK, I posted about this in the official forum and I think I have found a solution on this one. In my bug report I did know that it came back after I hit a long through ball, but thought it was just coincidence. But Now in my next match I get the same problem with the ratings after only 20 minutes. So I try to hit a long through ball and it came back! A while later I noticed the positive marks never came so I tried hitting a bunch of different passes/crosses but only when I hit a long through ball it came back! Weird really, but it works for me.
So if anyone had this problem in BAPS just hit a long through ball, doesn't matter if it is successful, and report back if it works for you too.
Edit: Oh crap I just played another match, after 10 minutes I stopped getting good ratings. Hit fucking through balls the whole time and nothing. Not a single positive rating after those 10 minutes... this is starting to piss me off. It worked every time in the other game. Seems like it bug out more often too. Tried crossing, shooting, everything but nothing worked... FUCK... thought I found a solution...

Yeah if it was too heavy the game would be abandoned. I do agree that they should have a thin coating of snow though. Would look very Christmassy.
Wow..what exactly do you mean? was the final version so different than the Demo?
it's just the typical feeling i had with ea games over the past years...i was really enthusiastic about last years demo awell, but sold my copy after just a week. i can't put my finger on it, everything is there, but still something lacks for me personally. maybe it is just the amount of small bugs and missing details put together that add up for an experience i can't really enjoy. :((
(starting with the huge amount of missing goalkeeper kits, the ugly looking fonts, lack of licenses in serie a, the through ball bug, imo still bad responsiveness of players, the 1vs1 tackling with X that will get you the ball allmost everytime etc., i could go on forever what i dislike, maybe it is just right for most of you - for me it sadly isn't. :( )

I've played the demo of this yesterday. Pretty good might I say. Love the enormous amount of little details that give the game a sense of realism. But I prefer the "other" style of play. It's a win-win for me this year for the consumer.

That Adam guy is a joke. He's clearly a fanboy, all he ever talked about was Fifa - then he kept reassuring fellow fanboy's by saying "Again guys - we're only mentioning Fifa because it's just been released". They might as well re-name it "The Fifa Podcast"

They can't talk bad about PES at WENB because this year they work more closely to Konami than last year. If they start to be honest about the game Konami wont give them earlier copies, no more play testing and so on. That is why one should never care what people like that says. Forums like this is the only place where you can get honest opinions.

Sorry to hear that lad. There are some missing licenses for Seria A? I wasn't aware.
I don't have my final copy yet, but I am sure the through-ball bug will be fixed eventually with an online patch. The fonts thing is unacceptable in my opinion as well, I would like for the numbers to be bigger so they are discernable from a distance, howeve I can live with it. The responsiveness of players based on the Demo, which I am playing to death and hope the final version is the same if not better, is just right for me. It just takes a matter of getting used to, and mastering using each players strenghts and weaknesses to your advantage on the pitch. It took me quite a while to get used to this different more realistic type of responsiveness but it is well worth it in the end and mimics real life as it should be. The 1v1 tackling with the new collision engine is a beauty for me. It doesn't get me the ball everytime, I sometimes misjudge as in real life and get carded. Other times when timed perfectly while running shoulder to shoulder with my opponent, I cleanly yet violently sweep the ball from my opponent's feet as I watch with delight how my opponent is also taken out ruthlessly in the process. This works wonders for me and it 9 out of 10, when I get carded, it is usually for a mistimed tackle on my part.
All in all mate I have to disagree with you respectfully. Judging from the Demo, the game has a lot to offer in terms of gameplay. My stance has somewhat changed in the last couple of weeks with this game. I have to admit I was a bit harsh in the past and didn't really give it the proper dedication I should have. After countless of games though, this game truly plays a beautiful game of futbol in it's own right. The shots do go where you want them to go giving your using the right player to shoot. The collision system makes such a huge difference on tackles and ball control, the headers have been improved to where you can actually control them by properly timing them. I can really run into the ball to pound some nice headers into the goal now as opposed to previous versions. The off the ball player movements and tactics work wonders! You really do feel the difference in certain players such as Drogba, Ashley Cole, Robinho etc.. in terms of strengh, shots and feel. There are a number of unpredictable ways you can score goals and more importantly, that satisfying and fulfilling feeling you get from scoring as it has been with PES games IS there!!!
Last night, in the 90th minute, I took the ball and began building the play up from defense. I brought the ball up with Carvahlo to J.Cole who then passed to Essien, who cut inside to serve Ballack. Ballack held the ball a bit too long and just as the opponent stabbed in for a steal, he managed to poke the ball in the knick of time ahead to an oncoming unmarked Lampard down the midfield. I then took control of Lampard and at about 28m out, shot a viciously low driven shot through traffic that caught Casillas off guard as he desperately extended his right hand to avoid the ball from whizzing by him, just inches from his fingers kissing the woodwork and into the lower right corner of the net.
I damn near took my shirt off as I celebrated with astonishment and delight around the room.
I wish I would have recorded it with my vid cam to show you what a beauty of a goal this was. Truly Brilliant!
I will definately be getting this game for the 360 and hope it hasn't changed much from the Demo in a negative way. The game needs patience that' well worth it. Master it, and play it to death as I have done with the Demo. Only then will you be able to see the precious gem that it is.
Hats off to EA for a cracking game!

Anyone who is a life long PES player and FIFA hater as I was, really needs to put it out of their head and just play FIFA for a good two or three weeks at least and just re learn, also get off the sprint and go back and across field instead of attack attack attack...

The snow looks awesome and if you watch that video closely do you see how high the ball bounces from a long kick? It's like it's actually hitting ice hard ground...
As for seeing the rain... I think it's more realistic that you can't see the rain in the normal camera mode. Did anyone watch the Blackburn - United game this weekend? It's was a total downpour and the rain was barely visible until the close up replays were shown. I think it's completely realistic in the game and should stay how it is.

Same problem as Fifa08, same solution as Fifa08, save two or more copies of your edited roster.
I save 1 called Manager, then 1 called Online, only the last one saved gets overwritten, which would be the online one, however that said Fifa09 seems to have introduced an online only squad file which is invisible except for when wanting to delete it, so it's possible this means that offline squads actually won't be overwritten by the online squad file.......

Still some annoyances for me:
2) Anyone who complains about PES run animations and not FIFAs is on crack! They are awful - but the other animations are good.
Number 2 really bugs me. I've never played PES, only the demos, and that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw that cartoonish running animation. A little too much tweaking in some areas between FIFA08 and FIFA 09. Should've just kept last year's.
I really hope EA will release a patch to fix the bugs in BAPS. It's so fking irritating! I really love to play this mode because it's brilliant in so many ways. But at the same time it's so messed up! You get a "-PASS" when you're not even near the damn ball and I'm not pressing the pass button! I took 4 shots in one game but still I failed to reach the objective of taking 2 shots...! And it's useless to play as a winger because every cross that you deliver into the box gives you a big fat minus in your rating if your strikers fails to head the ball.
I just don't understand how these issues were not taken care of before release. Didn't they test the damn game?!

You have to set it for the stadium you're about to play your next match in, so assuming your home, go start an exhibition with the team you're playing as in MM, change to overcast, then back out to the main menu, load your manager mode, save your manager mode, that should now lock your home stadium to overcast, now start the next match and it should be overcast :)

I just thought about something that could randomize MM a bit... If you know which stadiums you are going to be playing in, you could do this setting across all of them before starting manager mode so as to randomize it.
Say you set all Ivy Hall or whatever games to "overcast" - you should be able to play all of those games throughout MM as overcast... Do the same with whatever other stadiums. It would take some time but it's very doable.
As far as snow, you would guess that Germany would have snow games while England would have more rainy games...
Does this sound reasonable?

Anyone listened to the latest PES Podcast?
That Adam guy is a joke. He's clearly a fanboy, all he ever talked about was Fifa - then he kept reassuring fellow fanboy's by saying "Again guys - we're only mentioning Fifa because it's just been released". They might as well re-name it "The Fifa Podcast"
Yes I did and adams comments in that section
fifa been the game with 4 midfielders and defenders he must have forgot we have custom formations now and he said in ''pes'' you counter attack ''you also do in fifa adam''
Its a podcast for PES, there is no way they are going to slag off the game that made the blog as successful as it is!
This is the FIFA Thread anyway ;))

is it just me or is the fact you can't actually run at anyone with the ball really starting to piss you off.
I have ronaldo right, probably the quickest player with quality ball control in the world, i'm 15 yards away but driving at richard dunne and without the slightest worry as i try to jink past him he sticks out a leg and wins the ball.
I loved 08 and I am liking 09 but i'm just not having fun. Is there something wrong with me?

I'm like you, I can't dribble past anyone, even with R2 held, they just seem to stick to me and come away with the ball. When they run at me, however, they fool me and my guy takes a second to turn, by which time they're in a different time zone.

Sounds great in theory but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work, I think it only sets the changes for the last stadium you changed in exhibition.

So there are no english menus either?
I just played someone online 3 times in a row (used the rematch option) in unranked matches, and they were the very realistic:
Croatia (me) v Russia - Flowing football like the best of Euro 2008. I won it 1-0 with a powerful header from Olic across the keeper.
Newcastle (me) v Tottenham - A much quicker paced game, like a typical Premier League match with another header winning me the game 1-0, this time from Owen.
Boca Juniors (me) v Rangers - The South American class came through in a 4-0 win for me, with Riquelme and Rodrigo Palacio carving open the defence with their trickery.
The different players really did feel different to me - I instantly felt in more control when Modric or Riquelme were on the ball, the sheer pace of Martins, the power of Viduka etc.
The different team styles also came through very well, and made for different types of matches, and when the styles clashed like in the Boca v Rangers game it was also a very different experience.
I also got that A.Bell Fever achievement from him, so if anyone wants it then you can by beating me :PP.

Sounds great in theory but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work, I think it only sets the changes for the last stadium you changed in exhibition.
Well, in '08, and it sounds like this is the same glitch as last years version, if I set the exhibition mode to night it played all of my games at night until I switched it back to day or whatever. However, if I was playing in a stadium that didn't have a night setting, it would play at dusk instead (Lyon, Milan).
I guess I will have to wait until next week since I am in the US to try it out. If anyone wants to give it a go, please let us know what happens!

1-theres no version with english and portuguese...portuguese is only avalible in one of the european versions, and its the one without english...the american version im 99.5% sure wont have portuguese like in past years...
2-yeh the brazilian teams are updated and they play really well, they have a very diferent way of playing like in real life with the LB and RB going up a lot to hgelp the attack...teams pressure a lot less then the european, and play more of a short passing game...
3- they are rated pretty well in my opinion...Sao paulo and internacional are the best teams rating 4 stars...cruzeiro, palmeiras, gremio, botafogo, flamengo are second best with 3.5 stars...the best player in brazil i think is d'alessandro and ibison with a 81 overall rating.
4-corinthians(who is in the rest of the world), palmeiras, sao paulo have real chants!
5-Corinthians and cruzeiro have 3rd kits
6- internacional and goias are not licensed :(
7-we have the 20 teams from the serie A in the brazilian league plus 6 serie B teams in the rest of the world.
i hope this helps

You have to set it for the stadium you're about to play your next match in, so assuming your home, go start an exhibition with the team you're playing as in MM, change to overcast, then back out to the main menu, load your manager mode, save your manager mode, that should now lock your home stadium to overcast, now start the next match and it should be overcast :) Ahhh I think I changed MM team that must be it...

What you describe is a part of the game that needs some reworking in my opinion.
The basic "problem" is that defenders always seem to have a leg available to kick the ball away when you get close enough. It seems impossible to wrongfoot an opponent, and there doesn't seem to be any system in place for calculating which leg the player has his weight on, and thus wouldn't be available to just throw out to get the ball.
When doing tricks, you can get some distance from your defender, but that seems like a pretty simplistic system where the defending player's reaction time is simply delayed, to simulate him being tricked temporarily by a feint.
I described this just earlier today in a detailed post on the EA sports forums: http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/5882629-post711.html
It would be great is this was reworked so that defenders cannot always get a leg out, and also it would be great to put some skill and timing into defending, so that pressing X does a stab tackle, and if you time the button press wrong when you are defending, for example if the opponent does a stepover and then moves in the other direction, the player would try and stab tackle at the stepover, so to speak, and the opponent could move past on the other side. Committing to a stabtackle as a defender should have consequences if not properly timed. You could implement a feature so that the stab tackle needs to be aimed with the analog stick in the direction it should be performed. Thus if the opponent does an elastico/flip flap, you could be fooled into reacting/committing to the initial move by the opponent, and your defender would stick the wrong leg out, and thus his bodyweight would be supported on the leg on the opposite side, where the opponent moves past the helpless defender.
In turn to balance things back, defenders need to be slightly more responsive and "defined" in their movements, so that it is easier to contain attackers using your body rather than attackers being able to move past you just because your defender is difficult to manouver into the path of the attacker.
So, defenders should be easier to react to movement, but have less success when it comes to actually intercepting the ball stab-tackle style from quick opponents. More focus would then be moved into simply trying to stay between skilled opponents and the goal, and keeping constant pressure on them.
In real life, you almost always see Ronaldo having the upper hand when 1 on 1 with an opponent. A couple of stepovers, he picked a side and moves past. The defender has almost no chance to stop him if he commits to a stab tackle, his only objective is to stay in the close proximity of Ronaldo and not give him too much space. Trying to steal the ball and committing to a tackle is extremely risky, much more so than in FIFA (because of the unrealistic ability of defenders to always snap the ball up when close to an opponent).
With less skilled opponents, they would move slower and have more predictable movements, and thus defending wouldn't always be as tricky as against Ronaldo and the like. Still stab tackling should always require timing, and not be the "hold-button" affair it is today.

I've deliberately avoided playing MM because it was inevitable the cheats would still be there. I even notice them on exhibition matches, where the cpu sometimes slows your guy down until the AI gets the ball, then you speed up again, or invisible barriers mysteriously appearing around some cpu players so you cannot get in close to tackle them. Euro08 was dreadful for this and it's much improved now, but still annoying when it happens.
It's not a new engine, so the cheats were bound to still be there. I've stuck to be-a-pro mode, so the cheats are far less prominent as your team-mates do a lot of the running and tackling for you...but they still conveniently act like muppets at times and just ignore balls played right to them, or go into spasms when supposedly running onto some through-balls.

8 October 08, 09:31
They should try to work out that some simple tricks are performed without the skill stick. Like PES had (have?) where you do diagonally up/down to perform drop shoulder feint. But in general I think the skill stick is good because it makes people not using skills too much. It shouldn't be too easy to pull tricks off, you should have to master it imho.
One thing I used to love in PES was the use of R2 "feints" where you pressed R2 and changed direction to just tap the ball just before an opponent was going to take it. Kind of like Messi use very often with his quick feet. This is pretty hard to do in FIFA because it has to time in with the animation of the players feet which you really don't have any control over. But I did notice that if you hold down LT (alternative) while running and hold to the side you get a similar effect where your player make an extra effort to tap the ball to the side. I used to just tap LT, but you really need to hold it down until he does the tap and then release it again. Still it is not as fluid as in PES and defenders seems to be able to just put out a leg and take the ball even if they take your legs first. I think the game favours defenders to much like trance_allstar said, it needs to be timing involved in defending and not just stick out a leg and take the ball everytime.

I agree with the tricks.
As much as I like the trickstick, some tricks, especially simple bodyfeints, are extremely easy to do consistently in real life (since there isn't really any ball skill involved), and putting them on the trickstick makes them unrealistically bothersome to perform, especially when you try and perform several in a row after you change directions while dribbling and simultaneously trying to avoid alot of defenders.
They have a 2-foot feint on the left stick if you move it back and forth quickly when moving. But they should also add drop shoulder moves a la PES to the left stick, and perhaps some other context-sensitive easy-to-do body feints.
PES had several variations of the drop shoulder move, about 3 or 4 of them, depending on the player you were controlling (like Edman of Sweden having a couple of odd ones). They should reflect this, adds variety, BUT they shouldn't give players just one, they should design several variations, and then have players perform them dynamically, just so that it doesn't look stiff stilted or repetitive if you do several bodyfeints in a row. You could map these tricks so that you need to hold LT to perform them, but they should be able to be performed, in different variations, at any speed, even from standstill by pressing diagonally front and then quickly diagonally in the other front direction. :)

I hate the skill stick, its hit and miss. When I do mange to actually get past a fullback with Joaquin on another occasion I'll attempt to do the exact same thing that I did previoulsy but Joaquin does a completely different skill which obviously leads to him losing the bloody ball!
Yeah, it is certainly hit and miss. I find even in the arena, sometimes you perform a trick, then try the exact same movement and it just doesn't register and nothing happens, or it does a different trick altogether.
This is even more problematic in game where sometimes you go to do the trick movement with a player you know is capable of doing that trick, and nothing happens and the defender just barges into you and gets the ball.
That said, I'm glad all tricks are only on the stick and I'm glad they're hard to pull off in match. Hardly any footballers ever try any tricks, even basic things like body feints, during a match, let alone actually pull them off. They're all too scared of looking like an arse to even attempt it in front of thousands of spectators (millions, if it's on TV).
As for the defenders having the advantage with tackling, again, I actually think that with AI as it currently is (ie. still pretty early stages of development), it's necessary to have it this way as otherwise, defending would be a non-event, like it was in Euro08.
And for what it's worth, I really like the number of cards being dished out in the game for slide tackles. On-line, there's red cards a-plenty because people still just lunge in all the time with slide tackles. They just don't seem to learn you have to time it perfectly and play only the ball, otherwise the ref takes a very dim view....just like real life.

I just use the stick to knock the ball ahead on the wings when i'm sprinting down. Seem to get a lot of free kicks and cards for the other team doing this as they hack you down without the ball.
I downloaded the latest Adidas update today and the Spurs players have come back home I'm glad to report but the game is still getting on my nerves.
I can now start a Manager Mode season (as in get to the front page) but when I clicked on Play Match the screen goes black and the game freezes on me again! The in game XMB still comes up so I quit the game and it restarts my PS3, wonderful!
I can't do anything with Spurs in this game and that sucks.

i am really confused. i tried the xbox version a friend bought yesterday. and i enjoy it so much more. :( graphics are a lot better in my opinion (same tv, same settings), i have not witnessed the through ball bug yet and i also think, my personal experience, the player responsivness is superior compared to the ps3 version.
this is strange. :-S i think i'll give the xbox version a fair chance.

I'm really enjoying FIFA 09. I've had some very enjoyable matches. There are a lot of positives with this game. I'm not gonna mention them, I'm just gonna say that I love the game.
Just gotta complain about a few things though.
I played on overcast conditions for the first time on Stamford Bridge yesterday and the pitch seemed so hazardous as though we were playing on ice or something. Don't like what they've done with it.
The advantage. The yellow icon comes up in the corner when the ref is allowing the advantage and I'm thinking, yeah, great, then he blows the whistle for the foul even though I have the ball and it's my advantage! Aah! So frustrating.
Goalkeepers seem to love their goal line too much. Even with the Y held they are reluctant to come out for the ball sometimes and that has cost me a few goals.
I also wish changing the throwers, free-kick and corner takers were quicker. The ability to take quick free-kicks should also be implemented.

I doubt they are reading much here but keep posting ideas in their official forum because they obviously read that.
---
One thing they might fix for 2010 is that when playing BAPS your teammates should be more careful with their tackles if they already have a yellow card. My teammates get red cards in almost every game now, it's annoying to play one man less every damn game. BUT I do love that they tackle a lot, they just need to put in a caution thingy for those already having a yellow to simulate how real players behave when running around with a card.

Anyhow, using the RS on crosses/corners really adds zip and curl to the ball. FIFA is the new Madden, in the UK
http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=592&s=1111
Some interesting statistics about Electronic Arts' recently launched FIFA09 in the U.K. (via Chart Track):
* It is currently beating the sales rate of FIFA08 -- itself a bestselling UK game last year -- by 37.5%.
* It debuted at the top of the PlayStation 2, PS3, PSP and Xbox 360 charts.
* Of those sales, 42% were on Xbox 360, making it the 3rd fastest selling game on Microsoft's format (behind GTA IV and Halo 3), while 40% were on PS3 where it is the 2nd fastest selling game (behind GTA IV). 11% go to PS2, 3% to PSP and the rest for PC, Wii and DS.
Just goes to show you that no matter the culture or continent, EA owns football.
Well hopefully they will spend more money on it in the future and add all the features that Madden and NHL have

Sorry to hear that, because for me, it does wonders. The curls are noticeable on crosses/Free kicks/PK's etc... You have to bend the stick as soon as the ball gets air time. The zip on the ball depends on the power you apply together with RB.
I'm not crazy, I do this all the time with the Demo and have even managed to score some beautiful headers by curling the ball over the defense and into my striker's path. You have to quickly bend the stick after the kick and immediately let go of it to control your striker for the header. It's awkward, but very rewarding.

well, like in the FK, BEFORE u kick the ball u set the curve u want, so its like telling the player that u want him to crul the ball...but to be able to control the ball AFTER it has left your foot is just ridiculous.
from what i understood jflores, he said u would actually have control over the ball curve after its kicked..that insane.. i mean supose u shoot than the GK is diving trying to save it, and u can still change the direction of the ball(curve)?? WTF so now we have a remote control for the ball??
the way i play the game i only see that we can decide the curl before the player actually kicks the ball, and that realistic...its like u asking him to curl the ball

It has always been the same with past WE games as well. You kick the ball on a Free-kick and twist the controller-pad in the direction you want the ball to curve as it leaves the players feet. The same thing applies here with Fifa09. It's not as bad as you think.

nah m8, u actually set the curve before the ball is kicked, while set the power bar....after the ball leaves the players feet u have no control over it...and thats how i see in fifa too. But i understand it worng when u explained the use of the RL i thought u meant that after the ball was on air u could still add curl to it, which is totally off.

That's bollocks, mate. You add the curl with the LeftStick before your player kicks the ball. And how much curl you get on the ball, is determined how long your hold the stick in the desired direction.

For one I, and this i just from playing the demo, the graphics don't seem to be up to par with the 360 and I don't really like how loose the analog sticks feel on the Playstation's controllers. I was seriously considering getting FIFA 09 for the PS3 this time just because it's getting to the point where the game is identical on both systems but for some reason it just feels "right" on the 360. Just the right amount of tension in the analog sticks, and for me the PS3's picture is really washed out.

Same here, even though the graphical problems of the PS3 demo have been corrected, or so they say. My main problem is that when I try to play a football game with a Playstation controller, my mind immediately thinks PES and i cannot seem to get it out of my head. I changed the layout to be able to sprint with the R1 ala PES and move my player with the dpad but I still confuse the buttons, I never let go of the sprint and using the LS for tactics doesnt work well for me, its like it doesnt register.

It doesn't seem to be working properly in the demo. I was thinking it was a demo bug though. Pushing down on the left stick brings up the menu but pushing left or right to choose say "counter-attacking" or "possession" respectively, does not work. It results in the other tactic (ultra-defensive -> ultra-offensive) being activated instead.

don't know if it'll beat players consistently, but as far as animations,
it's the closest to the PES sidestep.
so don't kill me if it doesn't help. lol
but you, or anyone for that matter, should wean yourself from the PES style of play.
luckily i was able to do that with FIFA08, and it took at least three weeks to come to grips with it!
for example, does anyone (besides me) play with the classic/default FIFA controller/button configurations,
or just adjust ala PES configurations.

It seems you get different animations when turning if you turn holding to the side, or merely tap once to the side.
Tapping to the side seems to usually get a sidestep animation, whilst holding to the side makes the player turn his body 90 degrees.
Haven't found the sidestep animation very useful though, you can't really quickly shimmy back or move quickly like that. It seems to be just for show. :)

OK, so do one of these RAS curl shots/crosses. Then go into replay mode, and see if the ball changes curl direction after it leaves the boot. If it is aftertouch curl the ball should be seen changing curl direction after it leaves the boot when you apply the curl.
If you are using the RAS just before/as the player kicks, then you couldn't know what trajectory it would have gotten had you not interfered, which means that you can't know that the same trajectory and curl wouldn't have been applied to the ball had you not interfered.
So, either you can clearly see on the replay that the ball changes curl according to what you are pressing after the ball is kicked (proof that it works), or you use the RAS before or just as the player kicks, in which case you can't know if you actually did anyhting, since you can't know what the trajectory would have looked like without the RAS input.
Let me know. :)

Yesterday though I scored one from like 20 yards and got much more satisfaction as I hit it over the wall and curled it away from the keeper. Not to much curl just a slight amount taking it away from the fully stecthed keeper. Looked dope!!!

Well been playing Fifa 09 since day before release day (PS3), and to say I'm disappointed is an understatement:
- Anyone having trouble with 'ranked play now'? ie it keeps freezing on the team selection page
- The 08 lag has been improved but is still there. There is even lag on the f***ing menus which is unacceptable for a next-gen console/game.
- Who the f*** is INRAHIMOVIC??? (back of his shirt) - minor point I know.
- Why are Man City player names in lower case on the back of the shirts (except first letter)??? It just looks cr*p and unrealistic, a bit like PES.
- BAP Online 10v10 is less enjoyable than the 5v5, it takes longer to get all players to press 'ready' for a start, then everyone runs round like a headless chicken.
Overall hugely disappointed with this game, I was hoping for real improvements over 08. Guess I'll have to wait for Fifa 10....

The only way I've found to do this is to:
- create a league,
- invite your mate to join that league (by messaging him on the PS3 out of fifa)
- press x on their name once you're both signed into the league
- choose invite to game
- then get well and truly F****d off as the screen freezes, you try again, it freezes again, they invite you, it freezes again, you give up and go to bed.
If you are LUCKY, it will work. But in my experience it is completely random chance.

How can you be greatly disappointed with the game if you just listed some minor flaws and bugs?
Doesn't the improved gameplay count for anything? Last I knew the gameplay was the most important aspect of a game.

Okay, wearing my mod hat, let's stop the name calling and bickering. Now as a fan, LS will aim the shot on Semi. To put your spin on the ball use the RS. Now free kicks are different. You use the LS to aim standing, then you use the LS to put your spin in the ball. Up for top, down for backspin. You can also decide what part of the ball to strike using the RS, as well. But in real-time on the move shooting you want to remember to use both the LS to aim where you want the shot and the RS to place where you strike the ball. Hope this helps... Brian
This is from Brian a MOD from Operation Sports. He posted up the FIFA players guide. So I would say jflores is correct

Can someone please help me? How do you set up a match against a friend on the PS3 version. On the xbox there is an option to "play a friend" or you can create a private match, but I can't find either option in the PS3 version. Anybody know how to do this?
my mate invited me into a 1 vs 1 game last night - im stumped what he did to set it up as ive not tried myself but he said seconds earlier he had no idsea what to do... then suddenly i had an invite come up on the screen.
Setting up matches is easy on the PS3 once you know how. There are two ways that I set up matches for 1v1.
1) If you are part of the same club, enter the 'My Club' option and highlight the player you want to play and press 'x'. It'll then give you a series of options, the first one being 'invite to game'.
2) Or if you just want to play someone you know, both of you enter an online lobby such as Europe#1. Lobbies are in Online Game Modes. Then you'll come across a list with a bunch of people who have also selected that lobby. Then scroll down the list and highlight your friend's PSN ID (you can actually sort the list alphabetically if that helps by pressing triangle). Once you've highlighted your friend press 'x' again and it'll give you similar options to those in clubs, again one of them being 'invite to game'.
Then just wait for the other person to accept your invite and your cooking on gas.
Hope this helps.
choose what part of the ball to strike wtf?
For now and I hope it continues, I am getting the feeling that when I concede a goal or a match, it is actually my fault and not the CPU cheating me & I like it

I REALLY hate online 1v1 at the mo. The game is so unresponsive compared to offline, it takes a good 1-2 secs for my players to respond after pressing the button which results in players falling over randomly or running in the opposite direction as soon as I switch player. It's a shame really because online the little mistakes like running slightly out of position are punished heavily. Super cancel might aswell not be there, it doesn't work for me online, FACT. It's a shame as I planned on spending more time online playing tournaments etc.
How come 10v10 is super smooth whereas and a simple 1v1 is laggy and unresponsive?? Hope this gets sorted out in an update.
(And before some wise-ass says it's my connection it's not at all, 10v10 is as smooth as offline for me. Also it doesn't matter whether I host the 1v1 or not I still have the same experience :TD:).

Great timing with this post, Feel the same way. Im loving all the offline modes and also loving FIFA Clubs online but 1v1 online is just not the same, you feel like your playing 08 again. :((
Okay I have some big problems with the game. When I try to play 1 on 1 matches with a friend (offline) the game suddenly freezes as soon as he presses a button. It does it every single time, no matter what I do. I even went back to the shop to change it as I thought the game was faulty.
I don't know if it's a coincidence, but today I downloaded the squad update (general one) and the Adidas Live update for the PL. It used to work fine a few days ago, before I got those.
Can someone who downloaded both these updates try to play a 1 on 1 game with 2 controlers? Please, I'd really like to know if my Xbox's at fault. I'd really appreciate your help.
It has to be on the 360 by the way.

thats exactly what im thinking...
sounds like a fifa2001 thing for me, when we had that little ball marker on FKs and u could actually aim what part u wanted to hit the ball...
now if thats for real...its a pretty cool thing i imagine. ill give it a try right now...

Can we all get back to the Right Stick now please. :)
If it is indeed a part of the shooting/crossing mechanics, then we should clear it up now. Seriously, I've been waiting since ISS98 for some type of curl or strike control.
OK, so judging from the post that came from someone on "OperationSports", the RS does nothing during Freekicks (since we all know that we curl using the Left Analog Stick).
But, has anyone heard or seen an actual dev report this, or someone who can confirm that this info is correct (and not just, I own a forum/website, therefore I am an authority on this).
What I find weird is that the "FIFA09 guide", that had the nice graph for the shooting power/height, didn't at all mention you could change the way the player strikes the ball. You'd think that would have been sort of important, right? As in, "don't put too much power on it or it will fly over... except for if you use the Right Analog Stick to keep the shot down by striking the upper portion of the ball", that sort of thing.
I'm thinking about shooting David Rutter a PM on EASports forums, which is pointless since he would have so much PMs there it's probably not even a quantitative anymore.
So does anyone have any ideas about how we can confirm this. Placebo, maybe use your connections to bother someone real quick, or something like that? :)
Because this is something I need to know.
Again, because FIFA lacks a "Play Again feature" a la PES, we cannot repeat scenarios and situations, and thus A-B-ing isn't an option. So anyone saying "I did this and my show went low", it's pointless information since we cannot repeat situations to isolate and test single variables.
I am sort of excited now, despite clashing reporting on how and when it actually works.
FUCKING SCUMBAGS ONLINE STILL REIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF EA, come on sort this shite out, last year it happened, then it happened on Euro 2008, now again this, just played an Interactive League match, no one to take on my West Ham, so included Rivals, comes up, Chelsea v Villa, that'll do, I whipped a shite load of Chelsea scumbags last year in 08, let's see how we go, take the lead, then he does a Deco special down the line to equalise, take lead again, then he scores with Lampard after a rebound, and he watches it 3 times FFS, I take the lead for the 3rd and final time after Cech drops a cross, I watch the replay twice, the game ends and then up it comes: Connection has been lost with your opponent, I dont worry, that's a 3v0 win to me, but no it aint, its a game that doesnt exist, I mean can we ever stop this fooking shocking shite, why do people play online at all?
Think I may stay to unranked friendlies, cause its all shite this balls with people quitting, the fact the final whistle had gone makes it even more annoying.
Nick Cave
9 October 08, 01:01
It's why I don't play online Holio, until cheaters and scumbags are sorted it just winds me up too much...
I played the Interactive Leagues last year Nick, and no one quit, so hence I thought it was a safe bet, I beat Chelsea 5 times last year one week with West Ham, and it was a fun way of playing online, cause you were playing for your own team.

I'll be playing in the BAPS i think, but as for 1v1, I just get too wound up by all the tossers out there, it's the same with most games though unfortunately.
TBH I think any rankings and the whole trophy things make it worse I know a lot of people play fair and like those things but for every decent on liner there seems to be 10 idiots who just care about rankings and crap, more than enjoying the game...

Well in the Operation Sports FIFA guide it also says that when taking corner kicks, you can add swerve to the ball with the RS. I don't know if this guide is official from EA but it sure looks like it.

Yeah, but I am still not sure. Also it is only mentioned for crosses in the cross area of the pitch, which is kind of rubbish, since others have claimed it works for freekicks, shots etc.
I'll post in the official EA forums aswell and see what turns up.

also, is it just me or are free kicks alot easier this time round? like i scored one at most on last fifa, and this one, i've already double my tally in the matter of days lol. crossing is different, last year was really easy but this year its more realistic and a bit harder. can't wait to get my xbox back, thinken about fifa xD

i practiced first in arena mode. (press up on d-pad to swap to free kicks)
i hold the RB button and hold the analog stick say left for swerve and try not hit it to hard or goes over. i know LB just hits power and hard to get swerve in it, i would stick with RB as it worked with me alright mate

Some of you may know, some may not, but I found this to be excellent. David Rutter (head producer of fifa 09) and afew others from the dev. team have been active in the oficial fifa forums. They are discussing the game and listening to feedback. It's legit. This is brilliant. This is the way it should be. Feel free to sign up and post your impressions, suggestions for next years game. They are really listening to us.

I guess it can't hurt. Though last year I asked for a create a stadium (as in madden) an option for a 'random ball' before a match so you dont have to go out of your way to pick one each time. multiple players in the loading menu if you have more pads plugged in. So if you're playing offline with 1 friends you're both in there. If you're online then all of your team should be having a kick about.... and they didnt come about.
But then i did ask for players on the pitch to be more animated, previews of the balls on the menus just before a match and not just in the place you bought the balls and we now have them.
-
I think id just like them to expand on everything next year.
* Add an option to photo your face into the game like FaceBreaker.
* BAP online using yourself - add some bloody stats to the mode as well so you can track how well you are rated and are playing.
* BAP offline career more like winning eleven fantasia
* Saving replays
* A Manager Mode that is not being held back by other EA Sports manager games. Just look at how PES handled getting the champions league license. They easily could have brought a separate game out and cashed in on people who pick it up expecting the EA sports Fifa version again but they combined it into PES09.

i have just had two games which gave me exactly what i like and hate about fifa
i played as liverpool v juventus against some guy and the build up and passing between both of us was like real football- both didn't have many chances and the chances we had came close.. the game made it to extra time where i smashed a ball into the top corner with gerrard from the edge of the box - it was quality
i won that game and got an achievement unlocked for beating a creator it said fever pitch(maybe he was a creator, but he deffo played it how i think the game should be played)
then my next game against someone who picked france and i was liverpool, didn't realise he went international, anyway he was assisted controls i could tell and there was no middle man passing, it was straight to his forwards and attack attack, kind of like euro 08 style (yuk)
anyway don't get me wrong he was good at what he did but that just isn't my cuppa tea, he scored and i scored straight after until the 87th minute when i was clean through with torres, and i fucking missed..
90th minute corner for him and i thought i had loads of time to clear it and should of hoofed it first time, instead i went to take a touch when he did the last ditch tackle thing and it roled into the net.. i lost..

Whatever happened to Fifa or Uefa forcing the devs to sell the champions league as a separate game as the EA people claimed? Why force fifa but not force Konami, and why let your licence go to konami if you want a separate game and the money from that?
I have a question guys:
How do I perform a lay-off at freekicks?! I've tried pressing LB to call for a team mate and that works fine. But when I then press LB+Shoot, the player who is supposed to lay off the ball takes the shot! Have anyone managed to do this correctly and is it any usefull?

I assumed they wouldn't release a PES:Champ League edition as they've put it into PES09 so it would seem daft to release a stand alone game with less features than PES09. I read that the reason they dont add it into fifa is because they HAD to release it as a stand alone game. But then PES get the license and use it in PES09.
Have they said they are going to release it separate?

Hmm...I believe I've tried that as well, but then he passes the ball straight forward into the box. I want him to lay the ball off to the other player involved in the freekick, and that player is supposed to smash the ball towards goal.

That's a big difference. PES is a "football game", they don't need licenses to back that up. If it was called Premier League and Spanish League Soccer they would need the licenses because the name assumes those leagues are authentic.
Selling a CL game means (to the general consumer) that it is all about an authentic CL experience. How would that look if they sell a CL game and only have 12 out of 32 licenses? Everyone that buys that game and don't know anything about Konami/PES would feel cheated and I think reviews would rate it down because it doesn't give a full CL experience because of fake teams. Again, PES never claims to be a league simulator, so they never indirectly promise licenses. A game that says it is all about CL indirectly does unless it says with big letters on the box that it is not an authentic CL game.
I bet they would love to sell it as a separate game though, because just as for EA, it's all about the money in the end for Konami too.
I remember back in the days when we where all still PES devotees, we'd bang up a suggestion list and try to send it towards Konami.
Well, it seems to be a good time to do the same for FIFA now. Cause this time we would actually have some input, it seems.
What I would like to suggest is to make a separate topic where we can leave our ideas and fixes for FIFA10, and finally let a team of evo-web FIFA experts(the likes of Placebo, Chris Bauer, Trance Allstar, etc.) filter it into a definite, ordered and prioritized list.
If by any chance they would feel something for it..
*edit* Hmm, I just read that FSB has allready put togheter a bug list and sent ift off to EA. Which makes this less urgent.

...might I suggest that there is no such enforcing whatsoever like "the EA people claim", and is just a lame excuse for EA to ship two games in the same year? ;)
Like, "the same EA people" who said that the player number feature was removed because it is a feature which was used by few people, and had a high maintenance cost?
Or "the same EA people" who claim that next-gen FIFA doesn't go to the PC market because "current PCs can't handle it", instead of admitting that EA doesn't really dedicate that much of their budget to PC because it doesn't sell as much as the console games? ;) This latter argument in particular angers me. I seem to be the only person with a technical background who can't believe that they are claiming this. They are turning their lack of effort budget-wise into a marketing hyperbole
Honestly, this is by no means a criticism. What I want to point out is that, in the end, it's all just business and money.
I understand why they don't want to pour money into the PC version, as well as why they would want to release two games a year - Konami does the same in Japan (I remember when they even released three, so...).
I would totally understand that Konami would rather sell a UEFA CL game on the side, but then again, there will be that rumored DLC which people will have to pay for if they want to have it... Maybe that's their version of things this year.

hey i agree, also i think your gonna see less and less pc gaming because there losing loads of money cause of pirating... and i know you can pirate 360 games, but its alot easier on a pc.
Does manager mode have UEFA and Champions League? Or something along those lines?
