Mate all I can say is you're not palying it properly. I've never had a footy game flow so well. Had my mate over last night , a true hard core PES , D-Pad player. He was blown away and is now considering getting a 360 just for FIFA. The more I play the more I learn, I'm still a bit crap at dribbling and shielding but once I get those 2 sorted this game has no limits.

I think you are right - its a massive adjustment to PES and when you've been as used to PES as people like me have (every version since the first ISS), it takes a while.

That said, I'm at half-time at the moment in a friendly between Wycombe (me) and Port Vale and must say, I've really enjoyed this game and something feels like its clicking.

I've had to put most settings to at least semi and some to assisted to get it to feel more PES like, but this is a flowing game full of chances.

1-0 to Wycombe, the "Ginger Pele" Matt Harrold netting for the Chairboys!

FIFA seems to be creating a new sort of 'football gaming fan' - one that believes "you have to be a hardcore football fan to enjoy it". Its gaming snobbery.

I absolutely agree that FIFA is more realistic and I'm sure EA have an incredibly complicated physics engine chugging away underneath all the pretty graphics.

But I still maintain - and this is true across ALL games, there comes a point when realism = less fun. Just because something is realistic, doesnt automatically make it a good game.

You used GRID as an example...

Gran Turismo is more realistic (and admitedly superb), but GRID is 'more fun' to play.

Tiger Woods is more realistic than Everybody's Golf - but Everybody's Golf is more fun to play.

And I feel the same about FIFA and PES. And its not just a case of having FIFA a few days and chucking it in - it has very much the same feel of 08, which I became bored of after prolonged play.

With PES, I've never really had all the problems most of Evo Web have. AI cheats, on rails passing etc etc - to me, it just plays a more enjoyable game of football where it feels like anything can happen and every goal/game has the potential to be different.

I will keep trying with FIFA as it has 'something' and believe me, I do WANT it to be great and I do want to enjoy it as I feel with like 5% more tweaking, it could become an absolutely awesome on pitch experience.

But I'm glad so many people like it - and its a shame that PES and FIFA fans cannot appreciate that the other may like another style of game.

Well if these are the kinds of games you prefer then that's fine. I personally prefer tiger woods to everybody's golf and I also prefer GT to Grid (although I do like Grid). I find that I get 'more fun' from playing these games as they have much more depth, aren't as simplistic and have more to show me the more I play.

Nah...In real football the ref will blow as soon as a player in an offside positon makes a genuine attempt to go for the ball. They rarely wait until the player has touched it.

That's right as soon as the ref or assistant deem your interfering or involved in play...:applaud:

Yesterday and today I played my first "official" tournament with friends. It was impressive. 2 of my friends never played Fifa before and at the end they were going to buy it.

It was amazing and most of all: FUN. This game is so much fun on offline multiplayer it's just insane. From physics to the tactical sliders (Winston, I've put a long time on tactical sliders and they are really good, the most important innovation in 09 for me and something I had been expecting in PES for years).

Some negatives later, now I just want to relax...

Edit: Oh, and BTW, I won the torunament playing Manchester City. I began poorly until I found a way to exploit the fast strikers and the quality of Elano And Jo, so at the end I was an attacking machine and beated Juventus on the final (3-1). Manchester City is a very good team to taste the many aspects and depth of play of the game. You have quick players, but they are weak and you have to adjust your play and protect midfield, never giving the way for free and trying to end the plays shooting or crossing even if you don't have a very good position, just to not let the opponents exploit your weaknesses. Ace!

i have found out that this game cant be played at 100mph like PES

Use the run button at the wrong time and your gonna take a massive touch and have the ball taken off you. If you slow the game down you see how good the AI really is and how realistic teams play

Arsenal for example i was shocking with them when i held run down all the time then i stopped doing it and was using short sharp passes (you can find out how teams play by looking at there custom tactics) and the players always try to find space for you off the ball

So in short don't rush it take your time like in real life and you will love it

I had 4 injuries in the first 10 games in MM but my players didn't miss more than 1 match until now. I upgraded the fitness bar to 8/10 and now i don't have injuries and players recover their stamina everytime after a game :| I guess i will not upgrade the fitness bar next time too see if i get more injuries and tired players.
I have mine still on 3 and I've yet to have one, it really needs addressing badly...

True, they are a fantastic innovation. They have such a dramatic effect on how your team plays which makes me think about just how complex the AI model must be.

It's not just a case of AI players passing to each other in a join-the-dots fashion, with the occassional scripted run by a winger, cross into the box when they get within 20 yards, shot when within 18 yards.

It's so varied. It's like they are little people with their own minds. The "1000 decisions a second" line they came out with last year starts to seem more credible now that they've developed the engine further.

The physics model is equally impressive. Again, you can see they've developed it further from last year and there's just so much that can happen.

The level of control you have is good but I'd still like to see the control system overhauled with some real innovation in future years (Trance_Allstar documents this brilliantly), but it's still as good as there's ever been.

10v10 on-line is a mighty technical achievement, again, much tighter and more responsive than last year, despite doubling the number of participants. I've yet to have any serious lag on my meagre 2mb connection.

I tried another match of the PES09 demo last night and it's just unbearable to play. It's so far behind that you just know Seabass is crapping himself.

We play a 2 v AI which is always harder than 1 v AI don't know why, and we play a different setting for home games against teams in the bottom half of the table to the rest of the games, just so you don't get the same type of play and goals all season... :TU:

Mine's on 10/10 and I've had 1 injury in the first 4 games. A one-weeker as always. It's a shame the injury or discipline side isn't more in-depth. Call me cruel but I'd love to learn in the build up to my weekend match with Chelsea, the untouchable Didier Drogba was struck down with a Joey Barton tackle leaving him wheelchair-bound for 6 months, with Barton banned for 6 matches...

Might be false hope but I think the more people who like myself will be emailing EA as early as possible, the more chance we'll have of something happening next year. Something has to be done and I can't see any other option.

On a different note, I must say I'm impressed with the AI much more this year, it is so much better in my opinion. Might be different for people with different styles from mine but for the 4 games of my MM last night I could tell very little difference from the 4 or 5 online 1-vs-1 matches I'd played just before I started MM. I play on World Class by the way, as Spurs. Might start posting in the MM topic

^ Yea, the better teams that keep the ball, such as Arsenal, actually keep the ball because they usually have a man in space to pass to, not because they just do ridiculous dribbles and are untouchable!

Definitely, in world class i can score 2-3 goals against weaker teams and dominate the entire match with possesion football, this was very hard to achieve in 08.

Try pressing LB while crossing, it makes the ball more tense and tricky for defenders , don't forget to adjust the player position before crossing too, every little detail counts (player preferred foot / body position / speed / momentum / opposition pressure).

-Adidas live season update overwrites all edited data

Didn't you save a couple of copies of your edited data? If you played Fifa08 you'd have learned very quickly to save at least two copies because when you quit certain modes like manager mode it resets your rosters to default and then overwrites them! I keep one copy called Manager which is my edited ones and one called Online (for the 3 times a year I play online!) ;)

sorry to ask again...

The "best players" will play all on assisted because it's easier and they're all leaderboard whores who have the sole goal of being top of some meaningless online leaderboard.

WTF 3-5 man utd players have disappeared like Rooney, berbatov

WTF EA!!!! such an awesome game ruined by glitches

anyway to fix it and does anyone know what causes it

Have you signed up and are already using Adidas Live Season?

I better get some injuries soon in MM or I'm getting placebo to make sure they sort it in a patch...

I've had one so far in my GTFC MM game but I'm only a few matches in, was still only for a week sadly.

In Fifa08 I never liked to upgrade the fitness coach to more than around 5 or 6 because I like being "forced" to rotate my squad, anything 7 and a above and you can pretty much play the same 11 for every match, even midweek ones. That said in my League2 manager mode I'm having really bad fitness problems, I've already upgraded the fitness coach to 4 (he starts at 1) and for the following match my most fit players are on about 70% and have yellow fitness bars and some are on red (10% fit or something), challenging in the lower leagues!

Nah...In real football the ref will blow as soon as a player in an offside positon makes a genuine attempt to go for the ball. They rarely wait until the player has touched it.

The rule is when an offside player becomes active (ie moves towards the ball, blocks off a defender or interferes with the view of the goalkeeper) the ref should then call the offside.

What difficulty level are you guys playing with in MM? I´m having a good time playing in World Class but i´m getting a bit annoyed with the goals scored by the cpu ai , always headers :|

I play on Professional, yes it's wuss mode to some but I play on all manual controls (except shooting) which makes it harder so I don't need to play on a higher level which can make the AI cheat more to compete.

thanx for the tip m8, what about the header??

Yes it works like the shooting bar, it also works on timing, jump under the ball and it will go over for example, try using the finesse button when heading.

Yes, i did that in Fifa 08 but i didn't know that the adidas live thing would overwrite your data. Having to make 2 or 3 copies of the data is ridiculous in my opinion, they have to come up with a more practical method.

sorry i've not taken any invite yet for games online btw guys. only just got to play proper the other night cause i had a long weekend of drink and debauchery... and its only sunday. :lol

getting to grips with the game.

it's sick. the team tactics info alone just shows how detailed the AI is. so many specifics.

i just beat someone online using who was using barca (:rolleyes) with liverpool by putting on fast wingers and increasing the width and putting on high pressure. :lol he got two people sent off trying to stop babel and riera. ahahahaha

so good.

i have both versions (PS3 & 360) and will be on all day today. so if the BAP players are missing anyone, drop me a pm on the forum or even reply to this!

the game is great. there are niggles everywhere (urgh, players stopping on throughballs, 360's criminally short replays, ps3's slightly blurred graphics "on my tele anyways" etc, rain glitch where you can't see the rain etc etc), but even with all of them, it is the best footy game i've played since PES5.

I just started a Manager Mode with Luton Town for the first time in a decade. I was going to start with a big club like Liverpool, FC Porto or Napoli but I decided to use a low league team at the beginning. Anyway I have a couple of questions:

1. How do I arrange free transfers? Since Luton Town's budget is only £300k I need to spend wisely or better yet for free!

2. I remember Placebo and Nick saying that there is no weather or night matches in Manager Mode. Can I cause a night match by starting a friendly (at night), quiting and then starting my MM game?

3. Any MM tips for me? I play on Professional but I lost my first match against Lincoln City 1-0. Any transfer targets etc.

If I'm correct I think the only way to put someone as a free agent is not to renew their contract when it comes to an end. As for the other two questions I can't help you there, apologies!

Just started my first BAP offline mode, playing as a custom made striker player in Bradford City [I'm from there originally so I thought it was only right!] and I love it! Just been promoted to captain of the Reserve Team after 8 games I think which I was quite proud of! Got my stats up to 61 overall so far. What I love about BAP is the challenge of getting yourself up there and known and trying to aim for your national team and there's a lot of targets to achieve to earn more EXP and I like how they change depending on your level of experience and your position in the team. God I love this game, I just wish BAP Seasons was 15 like MM.

My target is to get to a Premier League team and injure Ronaldo, the greasy muppet.

There are no free agents at all in the first season of manager mode.

I also started a League2 MM with Grimsby and already I've signed a bunch of decent (ie around 60-67) players for about 50k-150k each, We started off with around 400k to spend but then I get sponsorship of 260k per match (yes very silly for L2) so after each match I could sign one or two more players (it annoyingly only let me sign 2 players per week anyway :(() by the time the transfer window had closed I'd signed 4 defenders, 2 midfielders, 1 forward and 1 goalkeeper, combined with the default Grimsby team that should be enough to get promoted I think, will sign a couple more in January as well :)

Because of the vastly improved physicality aspect try to sign players over 6ft and strong, especially up front, you're going to be facing defenders who lack balance, strength, agility, pace, if you have a couple of big strong forwards you can utilise the long ball game to get yourself out of defensive holes as well as creating chances, one tip is to deliberately time your head wrong (either too early or too late) and you can really put the defender off and force him into a mistake :))

From the EA forums

I have found the FUNNIEST glitch on FIFA 09.

Some of you may be aware that in the pre match menu, you can put an outfield player in goal, however you cannot put an outfield player in goal during the match, i.e swapping positions with the goalkeeper.

BUT......... (bear with me...its great!)

if you put an outfield player in goal in the main menu, (e.g. Wayne Rooney) and play the goalie up front (e.g. Van der Saar)

During the game, Sub off Rooney, and put the Reserve Goalie from the bench in goal (e.g Kuszack), then put your outfield player (Ronney) back up front for the original goalie who was playing up front (Van Der Saar.)

Then.....swap the new goalie, back with your original goalie whop was up front....(Kuszack off and put Van der Saar back on...IN GOAL)

Go back into the Game...

Then the outfield player (Van der Saar) and goalie (Rooney) will swap places during the game, and your goalie will play in an OUTFIELD KIT and your striker plays up front in the GOALIE KIT!!!!

THEN,.......(it gets better!!!!....)

swap your outfield player (Rooney - wearing a goalie kit) for another sub (Giggs?) and then watch Giggs come on in an outfield kit....and you will NOT have a player wearing a GOALIE KIT! ...(but dont worry....your "goalie will still catch the ball and not give away a penalty!!!!)

BUT WAIT.......IT GETS BETTER!

instead of taking off your outfield player who is wearing the goalie kit, take off the goalie who is wearing the outfield kit (Van der saar), put on someone else to play in goal (Kuszack) and have TWO PLAYERS IN GOALIE KITS!!!!!...one in goal and one outfield..

...sadly.....only one of them will handle the ball legally!!!!!!

I can not believe the morons over there are petitioning about player numbers in manager mode and not the flawed advantage system.

This is by far and away the biggest problem with FIFA 09. It's very nearly a showstopper in my view as it completely ruins the flow of the game time after time, robbing you of breakaways. Today I actually SCORED only for the ref to award a penalty instead.

The whole thing is a mess and I simply can't believe it got past testing.

They MUST have tested it because the commentators often refer to the referee when he does play advantage correctly, so there must be hooks in it which would have needed testing, how they didn't spot while doing it that the ref gets it wrong about 10+ times a game.

Hi Lads are there any leagues being arranged for FIFA 09 through this web site. If not, can you advise me of the best ones to join. Many thanks.

PS This game is the best I have ever played...even passing PES5 which I thought was amazing.

Don't know if this question has been asked before, but does any of you know what speed you play with online?

Because, sometimes when I play it plays like Slow speed. And other times it feels like the game plays on Fast. And when it is on fast, it kind off ruins the whole experience. That sucks.

Still can't upload replays on PS3, and looking at the official forum I'm not the only one with this problem. This really pisses me off, especially since you can't save replays on your HD.

Is that the shit where your player suddenly starts side stepping across the pitch avoiding the ball as you press towards it?

That pisses me off

I've actually noticed this since last night, you may or may not have seen but it happen a couple of times when we were playing, but it's happened more offline, mainly manager mode. I am sure they will easily sort it with a patch, these days it's easy I imagine.

I believe it's pressure in custom tactics or something like that, 0-100 with 100 being the highest up the pitch possible......

Had the game for a week now which has given me time to formulate some views.
Loving the game, plays superb. I've played more ps3 footy this week then in the last year, my friends all love it and have gone out a bought it(and yes we've been playing ISS since PS1).
Tactics are great, so are the diff playing styles, AI plays a very good game and multi player is fantastic.
Tried to tell one of my friends brothers who responded; 'playing fifa is like turning muslim'. The way i see it neither EA or Konami are my friends they both want my money. Me personally im going to invest mine in the best game whoever makes it. If 2k come out with a better football game i'll buy that. Times are hard and games are expensive, not buying something cause of its history is highly stupid.

Improvements me and the boys have thought of;
1:The jogging with the through balls need fixing
2:Player switchings a bit mad sometimes, closest player please
3:Random stadium/weather condtions option
4:When having a rematch the game should return to the formation screen so starting line up can be edited
5:Replay saving to hard drive
6:Easier way to sub/change kicker in game ala pro

Thats all we've come up with, each one quite minor but we always strive for perfection.

firstly thanx to placebo and the other people whos names escape me who gave tips earlier on the crossing, it has really helped me alot. from holding lb and powering up, gets real whip on them, to using lt to jockey for position when ball is in the air, timing the jump, body shape when crossing, and lastly i thought placebo was joking when he said you can do finesse headers, but i tried it, and i done a little glancing soft header, so it seems to work.

so i have been practicing my crossing, and happened to come up with this little beauty, im not normally one to upload but after about 20 tries i finally got it to upload, and it was worth it.

have a look and tell me what you think. and yes it is fabregas!!!!!!

the ps3 graphics issue is pissing me off aswell, playing fifa on a 40" hd sony bravia and the blurred picture is getting on my tits...i'm always fiddling with the picture to get it right but i just can't

when i previously owned a 360, i used the vga cable and the graphics were fucking brilliant...so pin sharp but the ps3 version is a big let down graphics wise for me, and it really shouldn't be the case

Is this happening to anyone else? I still haven't decided if I will buy the PS3 or 360 version. If this is indeed the case, I might stick with 360

Played some Online today both alone and with my brother (1 vs. 1 + guest).

Holy hell this game is fun. Especially when you find that person who will settle for a 3-star team or less, and who doesn't play the "run like hell all game long". I had 3 games in a row with the same guy who was awesome to play ("JFKRIP" was his gamertag if I remember correctly, if it is OK to post here). I played him once in a random unranked quickmatch, and he was one of the few who wanted to play rematches. Best gaming experience of my life. The goals in this game are just icing on the cake, it is the actual play that is so addictive for me. With the proper opponent you can really allow yourself and the opponent to play slow buildup football, putting the ball back to the defenders if you get stuck etc.

Seriously, I have to get a Xbox360 and FIFA09 now. Crap! :D

i never thought id say this but......after playing both fifa and evo 09, fifa is the F****N MAN!!!!.

Evo in my opinion just feels the same: same old boring stadiums, same old chants, same old pro evo. I know its only the demo but i dont think the full game will be any different.

Why cant they just improve it in the way all the fans want it???, fifa just has so much going for it. Everything about fifa is such a positive, theres really nothing negative about it. I would say its everything you want in a football game and more.

fifa 08 was good, but there was alot of annoying things like the overall movement of the players. But this year EA have stepped it up alot and finally football fans have got the game everyone has been looking for and that is such a relief.

it really is about time we got a proper game for the money we all pay.

I think Fifa has won the battle this year, no doubt about it.

I salute u....EA SPORTS!!! :APPLAUD:

Is anyone else as upset about the tweaked freekicks as I am? It seems as if now instead of the ball curving the moment you hit it (depending on the type of curve you place on it of course), the ball will travel a bit and then curve sharply out of nowhere. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to whip on at the keeper in the arena from about 40 yds out and watched it fly at him on a line, and then at the last second dip out of the way (of course he still saves it).

Why did they feel the need to change them this year? In my opinion they're terrible.

I could not agree more, but both FIFA and PES fanboys are guilty of this.

I have been playing PES for ages and I am seriously contemplating a switch to FIFA this year. I preferred PES, and let's be honest, until the last couple of iterations, FIFA's gameplay was not on par with PES. FIFA is now equal in gameplay and I am sick and goddamn tired of jumping through a million flaming hoops to get PES updated with all the uniforms and leagues. I have been doing it for years and it's time to stop. As a consumer, it is your duty to exercise your freedom of choice, that's what drives the free market. Competition is the heart of capitalism. PES has rested on its laurels and it won't get better until people start talking with their wallets. I guarantee you, a mass exodus to FIFA this year is the SUREST way to slap some sense into Konami. I'm not a PES fanboy, but I supported PES because I just want to play the best footy game I can get my hands. Now, it seems, PES has dropped the ball, and FIFA has picked it up.

Would that really be enough though. It could be argued that Fifa never improved due to people leaving the series as Fifa has always sold well hasnt it? I think what would really help is reviewers being honest and actually pointing out the flaws to the PES games. Last year the game was a mess yet if u went by the gaming media u would never of thought so. This year it seems that just because the problems from last year are sorted the game is now the 'true next gen experience' people have waited for.

I mean now to avoid saying Fifa is better many are saying 'it really depends on if u want a realistic game or something less simulation'. If roles were reversed this would never be said as the better simulation would always come out on top.

I've managed to get some time in over the weekend to sit down for a proper play test of 09, conculsion...I love it. I have spent most of that time creating a player (me) and starting a BAP career with Southampton (I know, don't go there!).

It is great fun, I have played 9 matches so far, performed well in all of them but I am yet to make it into the First Team. I'm enjoying the fact that you know whether you are having an impact on the game, at an individual level. Sometimes I totally dominate the match, other times I am a bit part player.

Tis a great game, just wish I had more time to play it.

My second is with Notts County 1 v AI in the lower reaches, almost plays a different game and finding goals a struggle, only played five games and lost both aways, sitting 11th so far but only three goals scored and two of those in one game.

Had an odd one last night, had a straight red after defending a shot at goal, got no replay of an off the ball or an earlier in the move incident. Their player was offside in the move and all my defenders were gesticulating the fact then after the ball went for a corner it cut to Diaby arguing with the ref who then pulled a straight red!... That kind of thing happens in football. An player gets injured for example and a reserve player comes in and impresses. When the established pro recovers he often walks straight into the team.

Probably a much earlier late challenge. It quite often doesn't show replays if some time has passed between the incident and play being stopped.

Did some reading up on the sliders yesterday and tried out a few "extreme" custom tactics and set them to my Quick Tactics buttons to switch between them during a match.

I'm genuinely surprised at how well they work. I was a bit sceptical when I fiirst read about them but they really are effective in recreating different styles of football.

I read the offical EA guide on the sliders which gives detailed descriptions of every aspect of the tactics and switching from tactic to tactic, you can immediately see the effect it has on all he players in your team (I was in be-a-pro mode so all my team-mates were cpu controlled), the runs they make, the positions the take up, the types of passing, the speed of play the type of defending.

I was trying a very short passing game with a "safe" attacking approach, and non-agressive, deep defedning. But my team was toiling (I was Norwich). So I switched to high tempo long-ball with aggressive defending, and the game totally changed. It was great to see them play lots of balls over the top and create chances, with Sibierski causing havoc, and the midfield and defence really hustle the other team off the ball.

Very impressed! Never expected it to be so good. Another break-through by EA.

A separate sliders thread would be a good idea. Too bad we can't share files ala PES option files (or can we?).

Yep, I've been trying different things and it defo makes a HUGE difference.

Even man-marking; I man marked two everton players who were causing me issues in mid-way thru the first half then by 60 odd minutes they'd both been subbed due to their lack of involvement I guess.

Quality.

Is this happening to anyone else? I still haven't decided if I will buy the PS3 or 360 version. If this is indeed the case, I might stick with 360

You need to make sure your PS3 is set to output 720p, not 1080p - that helps with the blurring a LOT.

Also, on my Bravia, I have to have Theatre mode on, and sharpness set to 0 - it looks fantastic then.

BUT, it doesn't look nearly as good as the 360 version. It looks far lower res in comparison, and I'm convinced it's only 630p or 680p upscalled to help the frame rates. The 360 replays are smoother too.

The PS3 version feels nippier to me, and is definitely faster (and has full half replays).

Not sure which I prefer, as I like them both for different reasons, but I've only played the 360 version for an hour or so. Hoping to give it a good go tonight.

Damn you all!

After advice to not give up on it yet, I took a well earned break at the weekend and pretty much played FIFA constantly when I had gaming time.

And.... its growing on me! Once I tried to stop playing like PES and tried to think about it a bit more, the matches started opening up.

One of the things thats helping to save the game for me, is so simple. Its the 'shield' button (let go of left stick and hold down 'dash'). That way you can get a bit of time for yourself - even 1 second, without having the AI nip the ball off your toes.

And I'll also admit, I've had to really change the controller settings to make it more enjoyable and PES-like. Got most things on either 'Assisted' or 'Semi' now, with only lobs on manual (like PES). I even had to turn the shots to Assisted today as it was really annoying me making chances and then the shot dribbling wide of the post each time - not only did it look silly, it also meant most games are finishing 0-0 or 0-1.

I dont care that I suck at it and have to have some help, if it makes me enjoy the game more and have more fun with it - then its worth £37.

I'm Wycombe in my manager mode and I'm really enjoying the way teams play now and I'm getting some fun matches, where last year, it was all a bit of a dull grind in the lower leagues.

I could be changing my mind and keeping this now (and getting PES)...

I'm afraid that the through-ball bug is now getting bigger for me than the game itself. I mainly play offline in Manager mode and I'm seeing it in every game. Perfectly timed and weighted through-balls just cause my players to go mental, spinning around and shimmying. I spend my time braced for it to happen again, rather than enjoying the game. Talk about a turd in the punchbowl! Was this bug in the demo?

yesterday i played one of those interactive league games and for some reason i was Blackburn(chose arsenal) facing MANU!!

i still managed to win 2:0 as well. i struggled in the first 20mins of the game but after i got the hang of it and found out my opponents weakness i began to dominate him. he kept using the wings so after shutting down and hacking there wingers and hitting them on the break i eventually got rewarded with two goals. brilliant stuff.

Also the players are more real now. before every team felt the same in 08 but this year they all feel different. manu players where too strong and fast for me, ronaldo was running rings around my wing backs earlier on

Personally I think a patch for that one specific bug should take priority over everything else put together.

Like everyone else I want night matches and weather in MM, and all the other little touches that need fixing, but the through-ball bug could be FIFA09's epitaph if EA are not VERY quick about things.

Strange, cus I haven't experiensed the through-ball bug yet. Atleast not to the extent that it caught my eye.

I'm having a blast with manager mode, but I have noticed a few things:

*I'm playing with Man City (which started me off with lots of cash, thank you very much). I'm at the start of my second season and Richard has rocketed up to 91 (whent up 8 "points" first season). In 08 you could get someone to evolve maybe a few "points" in one season, but not 8.

*The scout this year is drinking and gambling away alot more of my money this time. It takes alot longer than before to find players (ofcourse alot more realistic), but when he find one it's someone who is alot less skilled than my other players (56-70). I have upgraded him to 9 out of 10 but it is not helping all that much. My midfielders are averageing at around 84 "points" so sending out a scout is nearly pointless now.
In 08, when your team got better, so did the pleyers found by the scout.

*I found a player Named Tom Esson by the scout the first season. He has a shotpower of 97 and the long-shot skill is at 94. His first game, his first ballcontact looked like this:

Crap!

I knew once you and Winston started to be positive about the game it was going to be something special. My experience this weekend was exactly as you describe, just pure enjoyment.

Now I can't play it any more I'm gutted, I hope to get a 360 in the next couple of weeks.

I think it's a testament to the game that with so many bugs and flaws and stupid omissions, it still qualifies as the best and most realistic football game ever created. Imagine if next year they actually nail every last aspect of the game and remove all the niggles and outstanding issues.

I had the same, except it was pulled back for a penalty. Which I then proceeded to miss, and then went on to lose the game.

As I said earlier, I think this bug (which crops up at least three times in every game) is far worse than "player numbers in manager mode" which people are actually petitioning EA about.

Guys, to get a powerful shot off from long distance, about 30m out, do you press the power shoot button first followed by RT?

Or, do you just press the shoot button with lots of power?

Also, is it possible to press the shoot button simutaneously with RT.

I have noticed that I have performed and scored some scorchers from outside the box and scored, but other times with the same player, It's not as powerful. I do notice than when your on the run, the shot is far more powerful. Just wondering if there is any special way to get off powerful shots from outside.

Agreed. Those 2 things (although haven't noticed the through ball sidestepping thing) would make the game more fun to play.

Though, the advantage thing is probably pretty easy to fix well, just shortening the time window that allows the ref to call foul. If you keep possession for 2 seconds after a foul to your teammate, the advantage has been given and no foul should be given. Tweaking the time periods should be enough I think.

evacuate
6 October 08, 14:26
jflores, LT (alternative) will produce harder shots, but you have to remember that if the ball is long infront of the player it wont be as hard as when the ball is close to the body. When you time it so the ball is very close you can almost go all the way in the power bar and still keep it low.

The problem with the advantage rule is that the game can't fully understand what is an advantage. If you get tackled and then pass a long pass he will blow the whistle because if you or a team mate doesn't have full control of the ball in like a second the game think it's not an advantage. So even if a long pass will totally give you a 1on1 with the goalie he will probably stop the play.

Shortening the time frame might work a little bit better, but it's not a great solution.

No, the finesse and close control buttons are different - L2/LT is the default close control button, R1/RB is the default finesse button.

Back to the through-ball bug, what platforms/modes/settings are everyone who hasn't seen it so much playing on? I'm on PS3, in Manager Mode, using semi-manual, and believe me it's a plague.

According to the official guide, a direct shot (ie. just press the shoot button) is hit with the boot laces, whereas the finesse shot is usually taken with the side of the foot.

Not sure the skill button makes any difference.

This chart is supposed to reveal how to achieve the type of shot you want.

"...there is a direct correlation between shot speed and ball elevation based just on the how much you power up the shot meter. Also keep in mind that your player’s accuracy is greatly diminished if he is on a full sprint while shooting, as well as his lateral momentum at the time. A really good tip here is to let go of the sprint button, control your pace to gain composure, get the ball on your player’s preferred foot, and then let it rip. "

Really? I'm confused.

I have not been using LT/L2. I will have to experiment. As I've said before, I have scored some screemers just outside the box by using RT/R2 immediately after pressing the shoot button without having to run. Also, try letting go of the RT while on the run just before you strike the ball, to slow the player down and then quickly squeeze the RT again as your player hits the ball for power.

Unlike the normal "match" control scheme, Freekicks are "finesse" by default. Holding LB (player switching button) delivers a power freekick.

To have the ball dip behind the wall, you need to get lots of topspin, and just the right amount of power to that the ball clears the wall but dips under the bar.

THe Freekick system is kind of weak since they only use the power gauge as a control for both power and height. While more power usually gives more height, I feel this system robs the player of alot of detailed control over the shape of the freekickers foot and such.

Basically, in real life, just by changing the shape of the foot, you can get a variety of different heights for shots with identical power. In FIFA you basically only have 2 height possibilities for any amount of power (1 higher arch for finesse freekicks, and 1 lower arch for power freekicks.

PES, by using both the d-pad (up, down or center) and additional buttons (Y, X) for each d-pad possibility, allows for 9 different trajectories at all times.

FIFA really needs a new system, so that freekicking can be made both more complex, and easier to use (in the sense that you'd have more control).

I just wanna post a couple of these videos that I found and ask if anyone else is as disappointed with what EA have done to the free kicks this year? The motion of the ball in the air was incredibly realistic last season and maybe only needed to be tweaked a tad. Really I would have liked it if they'd made it possible to actually shoot over the wall and still be able to dip it below the bar with a driven shot ala Cristiano Ronaldo. This season though, as with a couple of other things, they appear to have tweaked the game too much in some aspects and nowhere is it more evident, in my opinion, than in these ridiculous free kicks that start on a line, and whip violently at the very end. Who saw this and thought that it was even slightly realistic? Not to mention the curlers that look like they're traveling along some sort of rail or being sucked into a vortex. Just take a look.

Oh Geez.. :-\ They really do need to fix those FK's.

What button do you press to curl the ball that way, finesse button?

Yeah, the RB on the 360 is the finesse shot. Makes it curve quite a bit, but it was damn near perfect in FIFA 08 and they've gone and taken it to a bit of an extreme this year. Last year a ball hit that hard and starting out that high, is going out of bounds.

Does anyone know why Liverpool and Tottenham doesn't have sponsors on their kits? Licens issues? And if I remember correctly, Santiago Bernabeu used to be included in Fifa before 08, does anyone know if there's any license issues with that as well?

they do in the uk version. Tottenhams is a gambling company and liverpools is a alcohol compant so this causes a problem in some countries. What i dont get is why Celtic dont have a sponsor and Liverpool do as they are both breweries

A trick to do lower shots from outside the area is to press the shooting button twice. Get used to press it twice in different "rythms" to achieve different heights. It works wonders to me and allow me to control better the shots.

This is maybe because that way you prevent yourself of adding too much power to the bar (according to the graphic in the last page).

I want to try finesse headers, I never thought they would be in the game, nice!

About crossings, you have to really have in mind what kind of team you play. Playing barcelona, for example, won't be much rewarding, because no one is tall enough to win the position, so you're "forced" to play complicated 1-2s and take advantage of the pace of your players. Play using Carew and you'll notice the difference right away.

Another tip for crossings: if the area is really crowded, try to press R2 (sprint button) while crossing, it will make a kinf of "high arch" parabole to the area. If you have stronge and taller players, they have more time to gain position with the joggling button and connect a header. Specially useful for those last minutes where you're desperately crossing to the area and half your team is there, or even for set pieces.

One tip to win headers that I use often is by pressing down cancel right before you're going to head the ball so you move towards the ball and then press to head it. I used this all the time in PES to dominate headers and it works well in fifa too.

Because sometimes it might be very difficult to get in front of a defender by just josteling. So cancel your way to get in front just before so he don't have time to jostle himself infront of you again. Just watch it so you don't accidentally cancel your header.

RB doesn't do anything on freekicks as far as I know. I haven't done any extensive A-B-ing to make sure, but I would bet that over several freekicks from the same position with the swme4 player, there isn't going to be any discernable differences between freekicks struck with RB and without it.

I actually did that in the demo. But, I think what happens is simply that every time you press the shot button, the shot bar simply restarts, but after the initial powerup of the bar, the following powerups aren't shown.

So, tapping shot several times simply means that only the last tap counts, and if the last button press was a tap on the shot button, you will get a low shot.

Like I said, I did that on the demo and noticed that the shots seemed both hard and low. But after some more testing, I noticed there was no difference between trajectories from several taps and just on short tap. Unless they changed it from the demo, which seems unlikely. ;)

RB is a finesse freekick. It's the one that puts the most curve on the ball. Hold LB and it'll drive it, and you can still put spin on it but it'll be more akin to the Ronaldo free kick. RB is for a curling shot. I think you could ask just about anyone familiar with FIFA 08 that messed around with free kicks often and they'd tell you the same thing. At least I can see a pretty large difference between a normal freekick, and one with the Right Bumper held down.

When playing with manual lobs and through passes I cannot execute a one time pass properly. What I mean is if I press the lob or through pass button before my player receives the ball to one time the pass, the ball is hit as if I had just tapped the button, when in reality I can even see the power bar is all the way up. Anybody know why this is? And it only happens to me on manual controls.

You cant finesse free kicks

all you can do is a normal shots with spin or a powerful shot with LB or RB depending on your config

That is my conclusion aswell. I've never heard RB Finesse freekicks mentioned in any context before, especially from Devs. Also the command list in FIFA for Freekicks mentions LB power kicks I believe, but nothing about RB.

Might be the same sort of thing as for PES where some people reported R2 changing the trajectory, when in fact it does nothing. It's a bit like placebo. You expect differences, and so you sort of pick up on nonexistant differences.

Obviously you can't just take 2 freekicks without RB and 2 with and draw conclusions. You need to strike several, ideally from the exact same spot on the pitch, and from there you can aim on the same spot for example on the wall behind the goal, and then take 20 freekicks and note how the ball curls and how far from goal it goes and how much bend it gets etc. Then you do the same only you change 1 variable, and hold RB. Then you take another 20-ish freekicks from the same exact spot and gauge the curl and such.

Didn't someone just write that in freekick mode the "change player" button (LB alternative) was the finesse shot and it added unrealistic curl to the ball? Maybe I'm hallucinating. Maybe it was another thread... it was videos that showed the ridiculous curl too.

LOL, my bad. Disregard the RB comment, I saw it in youtube vid of some guy giving a tutorial on free kicks and have been holding the RB ever since. I wasn't calling it a finesse free kick, just in order to make it easier for other people to remember I noted that it was the same button as the finesse kick. Either way, I never knew that all along it was just the analog that was making it curve for me. I actually hadn't even found out that you could curve the ball on a free kick until months after I'd gotten the game, lol. Now that I think about it, it may have been one of my friends who told me about it and told me to hold the RB down. I never tried it without it.

Just played a brilliant game in manager mode. Accrington vs Luton Town (me). Went 1-0 down in the first half. Scored an equaliser in the 64th minute. Done a beautiful cross into the box from the right wing and the striker dived and headed it into the back of the net. Then in the 90 minute I break free from the tired defenders and put it in the back of the goal! 2-1 final score. :)

i was playing fifa 09 with my mates today...inter milan are a beast of a team they have got javier zanetti who has good pace and control and he runs the wings...then you have got ricardo Q who is just briliant at the crosses...my mate was just demolishing me using intermilan and i was arsenal....what he will do was work the ball up to zlatan and that was it, he was onto goal.
i eventually won the match 4:3, this was because i played with aresenals strenght which is the passing game
even though the score line was high it was a very tense match i was making sure galas was alwayz marking zlata...but then he brought on Adriano and i had to change my tactics and so did he
he is now a converted pesfan because he said and i quote "this plays the closest thing to football ever".
i personally love this game...i started a manager mode with plymouth i wanted a to have that sense of achievement when i get them to the top league and bring in great players that improve the team...i also have a be a pro seasons with arsenal because i created my own player for them

i think the beasts in fifa 09 are Zlatan, messi, C.Ronlado, Zanetti, walcott even though he is weak when he gets past you that is it, what do yuo guys think?

all these point that occured in th game are the same as what happens in real football and this why i beleive that fifa 09 will be and is the best game out there...if pes2009 can top this and i doubt it that that will be the best game....but now fifa09 is king....
i am off to play me be a pro seasons got liverpool next, going to be a hard game hope i get a draw or a win

Whilst the PS3 servers are playing up tonight, I tried another couple of random off-line Be-a-Pro matches to try the variety of styles of football.

First tried a Serie B match between Bari and Modena and it was exactly like a typical Italian league match. Short passing, patient build up, probing, waiting for a chance to emerge, generally very tight in midfield but very technical. Not many chances created but we edged them out 2-0.

Then tried a Championship match Burnley v Watford and it still amazes how different the same game can play. It was a completely different style to the Italian match. High tempo, lots of scrappy midfield play, plenty of long pass, wing play, crosses into the box, ball in the air far more, lots of aggression, lots of huff and puff, a good, old fashioned British match.

I simply hadn't been expecting this from the game. It makes me wonder what they'll come up with next year.

I really do not mind Live Season. It's been fun going online as Spurs and having an even bigger challenge than normal against Premiership opposition, or playing Hull or Wigan online knowing we're now just as good as them, if not worse, due to current form. Still got a good ratio on 1vs1 however, 7 wins 3 losses, I've used Spurs every game and beaten Inter & AC Milan. Feels good knowing I can watch Arsenal lose after the next round of Premiership games and go on FIFA with my even more-worsened Spurs trying to pull off the impossible, the dream that could turn around Spurs real life fortunes, it's all down to me!

Perhaps you have adjusted tactics etc to be a bit above what your team can perform?

Perhaps try customizing the tactics so that your players don't press as hard, run as much, etc. Also, since the real life "fatigue" scenario isn't completely replicated (you can sprint with a player who, because of his low stamina level, wouldn't have taken a certain run in real life), you might just have to calm your playing style down, change formation to allow for slow possession football with alot of calm passages to avoid wearing your players down. You might have to play some sh*t football on purpose, in other words... :)

Gagh! Played this all night again till the wee hours and still really liking it.

Still playing MM as Wycombe - even though the lack of play-offs will ruin it come the end of the season.

I can visibly see myself getting better each game and scored 2 goals in my last match for the first time in the season! (yea, I'm shite).

Still some annoyances for me:

1) Still not as 'free' as PES
2) Anyone who complains about PES run animations and not FIFAs is on crack! They are awful - but the other animations are good.
3) Anyone had a 'skating' player - the engine forces a player into a part of the pitch and their legs dont move, they just slide. Odd and if it was in PES, it would be ridiculed.
4) Still hard to score different types of goals.
5) The advantage rule is stupid.
6) The through ball bug

Aside from that - which I dont really mind too much, its a very good game.

I'm still going to get PES as I think its a better experience than FIFA, but I may well keep FIFA for the MM and BAPS which are very good.

I haven't bought FIFA since 96, so forgive me for not knowing this kind of thing, but... if I got a US version of FIFA09 for the PS3, would I be able to play against people in Ireland/UK/rest of Europe? Basically, are there any differences in the online? Cheers, and thanks in advance.

You are kidding? Placebo - is this true????

If that is the case, then the game has just become a definite keeper as for all its faults, it means I can fully enjoy the lower leagues!!!

Yes it's true i've seen the screenshots

Yep, playoffs are there I've seen a picture too.

The AI is mad in this game, unless I'm being exceptionally crap now. I did a MM with Spurs on World Class up to Matchday 12 and coasted really, I only found a Cup game hard and lost only that game. The AI was clever, had plenty of chances, hit the woodwork etc, but altering my tactics correctly mid-game and adjusting my own style of passing whilst actually on the pitch paid off a lot.

Since beginning a new World Class MM with Spurs however, every game was like FIFA08 yesterday, with 10-25 shots on target for me per game with a few touch woods, however I've lost a lot of games 0-1, to the CPU's only shot on goal. Often it's that daft God-mode where even a small frame midfielder can shrug off 3 or more of my defenders tackles at once and skip towards the net. Why such a change in AI.

Very surprising as we were told by EA via the first FSB podcast that the playoffs were not in......

Although rumour is that the alleged "yes the AI now buy players and use them in their first team if better than what they have" may not be true :(

And another rumour I read was that someone got to the playoff final and it was at Ivy Lane not Wembley :(

But these two were read on the EA forums so I take them with a pinch of salt.

Playoff's are in mate, there's even been a screenshot to confirm it.
OMG That's awesome!!! I didn't know that! Wonder if they are in for BAP Seasons too?

I think I'm gonna have to start my manager mode again as Charlton now!!!

Edit: And you're a referee in the game Placebo?
