Turn on those tactics. 10 men behind the ball, counter attack. I agree that it's annoying but since custom tactics can be used online (I think) this would be a good opportunity to see just how well they work.

Question though, someone in another forum said that it was possible to limit the number of people that you could have on your side during Be A Pro (unranked) matches by going through the lobby system. I had no idea what he mean't by that but do you know if this is true?

Just got my copy of FIFA 09 on PS3. ITS BRILLIANT! Played a match Liverpool vs Manchester United at Anfield on overcast and it was so fun even though I lost 2-1. I then played a 10v10 game (won 3-0) and Man City vs Man U (lost 1-0). Its just so good! :)

There's no English commentary ("only" French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Czech, Polish, Hungarian).

since ure in the US suggest importing with game or shopto, a lot cheaper and importing to the US is quite easy, here in brazil we have toons of taxes and procedures that delay a lot the delivery.

Sadly no matter how good Fifa 09 is many people wont buy it out of brand loyalty to Konami. Its like someone refusing to swap his Fiat Panda for a Ferrari because he likes Fiats. Much like the emperors new clothes story in many ways people cant or dont want to see the truth.
Lets be honest after playing the PES09 demo solid yesterday and Fifa09 today there is no comparison.
People can spend their money whatever way the want but the choice this year is like a Steak Dinner or a dogs turd sandwich.

Couldn't agree more. Everything you see PES fanboys accuse FIFA of being is exactly what they have in their game, i.e. ping pong passing, arcade feel, stiff movement. Makes absolutely no sense. I downloaded the PES demo last night and could barely stand it. Quickly deleted it as the drive space was clearly more valuable...LOL.

I find the Dynamic Camera is best. Bring the height right down and then zoom it out almost all the way about 90% That way you can see plenty of the pitch and see the crowds in the stands on the far wing looks great and shows off the graphics really well.

No Nick. Did a search and nothing. He's only in the game under the Russian national team. I dont want to create a new player if there's a way of incorporating the original into the MM.

In FIFA 08 you could go to team management and just search for him and take him from the Russian National Team and place him on another squad from the get go. Somebody said that there were no free agents in this game but if there are you just put him there if you want to and then you'll be able to buy him. He won't cost anything though. Otherwise you'll have to place him on Spurs, restart your manager mode, and then carry on the losing tradition at White Hart Lane because even he can't help them.

Yeah, my bad, you go to transfers. Club transfers and (at least this is how I was able to do it last year) search the name. If I recall correctly (and i wish i could check 08 now, but my 360 is on it's way back from repair) it would show you players who were both on club teams and those on international teams. I would then just either transfer the player str8 over, which would result in that player effectively being duplicated as he'd still stay on the NT, and placed on my team. Or the free agency I believe.

I know that I did it w/ a specific team, that I'm certain of. As far as placing the guy in the free agency, that I'm not too sure about. You might be better off just putting him on the team.

Ok dude, thanks for that. I did go to International Transfers but obviously from there you can only swap team members around it seems from within the same national team.

I also tried Club Transfers but didnt use this "search" function and therefore couldnt find Arshavin as Zenit arent in the game and there was no way of viewing the Russian squad from there, either.

don't bother brunnoce, i bought mine here in france, as it came earlyer on tuesday, i had to give it back as the comentary and the text was ONLY in french, i ordered the english version from amazon two days ago, i hope it will arrive tomorrow, can't wait to play it again

I was thinking about getting a ps3 just for fifa 09 and i was thinking that the new pro evo will not be good.But today after testing the new pro evo (Pc version - i dont own a ps3) it kinda gives me the old good feeling that previous pro-evo, winning eleven games used to give me.I think that pro evo 09 is like pes 5 with better graphics. Thats my opinion (i know its a fifa 09 thread but its importand for my question i will put).
Let me note that i never tested fifa 08,euro 08, fifa 09 because i dont own a ps3.
I am very curious about fifa 09 and how it plays because there is TOO much enthusiasm from people here for fifa.
So is it a ps3 worth getting for fifa 09?? (i know that ps3 has a lot of games other than fifa but i play footie games mostly)

Just did it, go to team transfers, national teams, choose a different Russian player from the pool on the left, have him replace Arshavin in the Russian squad, now go back out and he'll be in the Free agents team! :)

Now we need to make a list of free agents in real life to put in the Free agent team :)

I don’t want to get into the console war thing im no fan boy I want value and service for my money. Fifa 09 is a superb game and if your into Football id get a PS3 or Xbox 360 the graphics look exactly the same but the Xbox 360 has more games and here anyway it’s a lot cheaper to buy I had a PS3 and didn’t like it. The PS3 controller is good for football games like PES09 but the Xbox ones fine with Fifa I like it a lot. The truth is very few games maximise the Next generation power of the PS3 or XBOX360. I find XBOX live to be really good. Its up to you.

Fifa09 next gen is better than PES current gen or next gen or Fifa09 on PC, that's the simple fact, now this is a Fifa thread, go to a PES thread and they'll tell you the opposite, best thing is to find a friend/store where you can try both games on a PS3/360 and judge for yourself.

You can change nationality in Fifa09 yes, just changed Akpo from English to Nigerian :)

I'm wondering, does anyone know how to go about setting up a BAP Club match? Is there a separate menu choice or do you have to do something else. I'm in the U.S. and don't have the game yet but I've read something that I can't believe regarding the mode and I'm just trying to find out from those that have played it how you actually meet up with your Club members to play a game.

To play a game everyone meets up in the locker room or whatever it's called. Then when you have enough players you just press the button and it starts to search for another team to play against. That is how it works on NHL 09 and it looks exactly the same in fifa, so I guess it's like that.

yeah i started a BAP with myself in the rovers team,i did the stats and im the best player in the league haha,scored a hatrick in my first game against bohs and then got sent off,the game is class:TU: they should have put Linfield in the other teams league considering they are the best team in the irish league

It's usually a result of the host or someone within' the game. If their connection is very bad it'll lag up the game for the rest of you guys as well. At least that was the case in '08. I'm sure the same conditions apply to this one too though.

So you're actually able to alter your tactics to tell specific players to push up. Like can you tell your LB or your RB push up or does it have to be both of the fullbacks?

LOL, had to share this bit: A bunch of people on the EA community boards were asking David Rutter and really any EA rep that was on the boards if there was going to be a patch later on to allow us to edit the kit numbers in Manager Mode. Here was Mr. Rutter's response [Note: the response addressed a number of issues, this is just the part pertaining the Manager Mode question]:

"...The changing numbers in MM was removed this year. I've been told it's because a tiny fraction of users used this fairly expensive to maintain feature. It seems from the voices on here that was a mistake, but we'll not be able to fix this in a patch for 09 by the sounds of things..."

Got FIFA09 on Thursday and decided to play it as much as possible before giving my opinion. Overall I am enjoying it, lots of options and so far ahead of PES it's unbelievable but IMO it's not as good as the demo. The responsiveness seems closer to FIFA08 than the demo which I'm sure I'll get used to but i gotta say my heart sank when i found myself pressing buttons and having to wait a second before the action took place and I just can't seem to turn sharply at all. I'm not talking 180 degrees here. I'm talking 45 and 90 degrees, just seems sluggish. I feel like I am crushing the control pad during the game trying to get my players to move. Now don't get me wrong although this is a major issue for me, I got used to it in FIFA 08 and this version is a big enough improvement in other areas to keep me busy for a while.

Those bloody "Lets FIFA09" signs next to goals (looks awful)

What team did you choose in the retail version? As for me the response is the same for equal teams whilst the 1st touch has been sharpened making it generelly more tight and responsive for me. Odd that for you its different, unless you are using lower league teams. Havent tried any myself.

It's not any different mate. Maybe some of the poorer players don't turn as quickly but play with top teams and it's exactly the same.

Fifa 09 is a superb game and if your into Football id get a PS3 or Xbox 360 the graphics look exactly the same

If you mean FIFA looks the same, it very much doesn't.

The 360 version is FAR better looking than the PS3 version.

But, the PS3 version feels different, and is much faster.

I can't yet decide which I prefer, and to an certain extent, the feel so different, I'm tempted to keep both.

Not sure it's been mentioned here, and I just discovered it yesterday.


Normal 90 degree turn - Hold Analog stick 90 degrees to the side

Sidestep Turn - Tap the analog stick to the side, don't hold.



Not sure if there are any other benefits of doing a sidestep, like being able to shimmy in another direction more quickly than a normal turn.

Check it out guys, maybe we can find some type of turn or such that could become very useful.

Also, not sure but there might be a different animation for holding LT and doing a 90 degree turn in the manners above aswell.



Like maybe you can do a sidestep turn, and then immediately roll the ball back the other way with [LT + Right stick to the side 90 degrees].

Experiment. :)

Played my first game of it today, didnt have chance yesterday haha, went town and bought it before went out for mates bday hence didnt get the chance.

So its all set up similar to 08, so went to normal match, thought I would do a Inter vs Milan derby game to start. I put the start thing on like I play football games for my life mode thing the highest one... I won 5-1 easily, so after I was expecting to be on a low difficulty, find out it was on World Class... hopefully It isnt gonna be that easy. Will have to have more games though for definite, probs on Legendary. See how it goes, but from what I see its similar to demo, so all good.

I personally dont like the make your own celebration thing, I think it takes away from the goal, like the immediate reaction of the player scoring, jusf doesnt feel right, its like a stupid little mini game after a goal each time. But meh, guess its fun for the first couple of times.

There is one other tiny bug that I discovered:
In the home Arena my controls are on manuals but when you are in the arena before the beginning of the match, all controls gone assisted unlike my configuration.

Might as well say in this post there seems to be a lot of differences between the PS3 and 360 versions.

I've had snow in the PS3 version (Exhibition match obviously), and it was VERY visable using Telecam minimum zoom.

Graphics generally are far better on the 360, but the PS3 version is faster, and to me, feels slightly more responsive.

Not sure which version I prefer.

I also hate the crossing in general, even though you can occasionally whip out an absolute gem. I also find that ground passing inside the box to be incredibly awkward.

I don't like using assisted through balls or passing, but I detest the way in which [on manual] you have to hold a button for 1/2 seconds to get any amount of power on a pass, by which time you've lost the ball.

Like for example, I've yet to figure out how the LB crosses actually work.

I know it is one press for high, two for medium and 3 for low cross a la PES.

But can you also power them up aswell as decide their height, or is it like PES (where if you use LB crosses, the power is automatically decided).


And if you can indeed decide the power for the LB crosses with the power bar that appears, how exactly do you power up properly.

Say you are going to do a medium height cross (LB and Longpass x2). After you hold LB, do you go [press and hold to power up the power you want, then release and tap the button again to get the 2 presse sin there], or do you first tap the button, then press it again and hold for the power?


I've not seen it described anywhere from the devs so not sure which it is. :)

I prefer the "difficulty" that all manual introduces because I can then play on a lower (professional) level and the AI is still competitive without it cheating, I also stick to playing with lesser teams instead of having a team filled with world stars (just started a Grimsby Town manager mode and my best player is on 64) :))

Like for example, I've yet to figure out how the LB crosses actually work.

I know it is one press for high, two for medium and 3 for low cross a la PES.

But can you also power them up aswell as decide their height, or is it like PES (where if you use LB crosses, the power is automatically decided).


And if you can indeed decide the power for the LB crosses with the power bar that appears, how exactly do you power up properly.

Say you are going to do a medium height cross (LB and Longpass x2). After you hold LB, do you go [press and hold to power up the power you want, then release and tap the button again to get the 2 presse sin there], or do you first tap the button, then press it again and hold for the power?


I've not seen it described anywhere from the devs so not sure which it is. :)

I find bodyshape makes a big difference, I try to do it so I run on the wing in a straight line, then before I want to cross I open the wingers bodyshape slightly away from the goal, so that he has a more natural leg/foot position to cross the ball, this also helps to add curl to move it away from the keeper.

As for the tapping, I tend to hold and power, then do tap tap before releasing.

I thought with early crosses the height is decided but you control the power? I certainly find that most of my early crosses have a lower move vicious trajectory, I believe early crosses are any crosses outside a line parallel to the 18 yard box :)

(I should actually read the playing guide at some point, didn't get round to it yet!).

I just got tackled, kept the ball and played the sweetest pass through to my striker, just as he got to it and was through on goal the ref blew the whistle and gave me the foul, in the other half. So, so FUCKING annoying!

The fact that the ref goes back and yellow cards someone 10 minutes after the foul happened EVERY time is also very frustrating.

Offside seems a bit too precise for my liking, half the offsides I've been given wouldn't of actually been seen by a human linesman, the lines are practically touching when it shows how offside I am. There also seems to be a delay on through ball so by the time you see a player running then the ball doesn't actually go through until he's strayed offside (by about 1mm).

It may be hard to believe I'm quite enjoying the game, as I've now more or less got used to the shooting, but I am. I always rant at the latest PES, and I can accept games have flaws. Just these seem to be so continuous and effect the game dramatically it's starting to wind me up.

Also, can anyone tell me if there's any equivalent to the Super Cancel on PES? (Both R1+R2 at the same time)

I know what you mean, I can aim it ok from the bottom flank, most of my crossers go were I want them to go, but when I am at the top of the screen crossing downwards, it seems harder and most go behind the player.

I hope next year instead of the arena, they give us the whole pitch with team mates, so we can practice this sort of stuff (like in Pes)

You can put some good crosses in, but they just don't feel right. PES 4,5 and 6 had the feel of crosses spot on. In Fifa the long passing in general is just too floaty and the trajectory just isn't realistic.

There is one other tiny bug that I discovered:
In the home Arena my controls are on manuals but when you are in the arena before the beginning of the match, all controls gone assisted unlike my configuration.

Just started my second season on BAP: Seasons. Still noticing a lot fot he old "FIFAristics" i.e making my player stall so the CPU can take the ball from me.

Feels like the gameplay has been masked by the new animations, perhaps i need to give 08 a quick blast before i say that though.

Still, not knocking, more 'knit picking'... enjoying it a lot.

Oh yea, one slight downside:

In BAP everytime you ask for a pass, if the CPU decides not to pass it to you, you get marked down. I think, rather than encouraging you to pick and choose when you ask for the ball, its encouraging you not to get yourself involved in the game as, ultimately, its the CPU who has the final say no whether you call is "worthy" of response.

Quite a few times i've made a run from midfield to break through the opposition defence, or made myself space for a team mate under pressure and they've ignored my call and either lost the ball or passed to another player who is in no position to accept the pass and the ball is turned over.

Small i know but it really is annoying and imo not right. Along the same lines as; "Cross, teammate misses, -Pass"

One question to those who have the game already. Is the night lighting bad as it looked on past vids?

It's not improved on Fifa08. It depends on the stadium, though. I played a night game at the Allianz Arena and the whole pitch was lit, but at the Mestalla there was still darkness around the edges of the pitch. It's a shame as the lighting was nailed in the Euro game, as was the weather.

It's infuriating how EA can produce such a brilliant game, yet fuck-up on so many of the basics.:brick:

Spent all day playing MM and i absolutely love it but there are some things i would like to report:

-Teams celebrating draws/losses in the end of the game cut scene , (how weird is that?)

I would think the people that is high on ea leaderboards are playing on assisted, maybe some settings on semi. Because those settings make everything so much easier.

If you want a challange and play realistic then you should go with manual and some on semi. When I play BAP Season I have manual on everything but semi on normal passes so it is possible to hit longer passes without taking a second to fill up the meter. However when playing BAP online I will probably use some more on semi because I would assume that everyone else play ass/semi in that mode.

Really hate the through balls on manual, was perfect in euro and I can't use them at all now. takes forever to fill up the meter... Probably the one thing I hate the most with 09.

I can join Quick matches against random bods fine, but when I try to set up or join a room to play someone in particular, it doesn't work. Tried last night and tonight to set up games against two friends We get to the team selection screen, and it freezes and kicks us out a few seconds later. None of our connections are at fault. Guys I've been playing FIFA09 this weekend (Xbox360) and it's everything I expected.

However, I am finding online play shockingly bad.

- Every game is against some Inter/Barca/Brazil faggot.
- I play on all semi and some manual controls, but many people I've played against are surely using fully assisted controls and scoring some stupid goals, it's completely killing the realism for me.
- There is no way to force people to play semi, it's "any", "assisted" or full manual which no one seems to be playing with anyway. This is a really stupid move on EA's part as you are basically forced to play on any the whole time.
- You can't see the control settings of the other person, I want to at least know if the opponent is using auto shooting so I can switch it on to make it fair.
- The host should be able to set the game speed, is it all on normal? Because I swear I've played a few matches that have been running at warp speed.

I've been playing some multiplayer games with my bro on slow game speed with all semi or manual controls and it's been phenomenal, a true representation of football. I then go online and it's a bunch of gimps that want to play the game "arcade style".

Anyone annoyed by this, or are there options there that I am missing perhaps.

FIFA is not a game without frustration. Frankly, no game is... It's a lot less frustrating than FIFA, and winners are definitely decided more by skill than last time. It's just the downside of having a very complicated physical game, without having the same accuracy with the animations. Pretty much all problems come from players not reacting as well as they would in real life, either in AI decisions, or by lack of an animation which fits.

Honestly, though, if you are just failing to get the chances you want, you need to play more, or drop the difficulty level.

FIFA seems to be creating a new sort of 'football gaming fan' - one that believes "you have to be a hardcore football fan to enjoy it". Its gaming snobbery.

I absolutely agree that FIFA is more realistic and I'm sure EA have an incredibly complicated physics engine chugging away underneath all the pretty graphics.

But I still maintain - and this is true across ALL games, there comes a point when realism = less fun. Just because something is realistic, doesnt automatically make it a good game.

You used GRID as an example...

Gran Turismo is more realistic (and admitedly superb), but GRID is 'more fun' to play.

Tiger Woods is more realistic than Everybody's Golf - but Everybody's Golf is more fun to play.

And I feel the same about FIFA and PES. And its not just a case of having FIFA a few days and chucking it in - it has very much the same feel of 08, which I became bored of after prolonged play.

With PES, I've never really had all the problems most of Evo Web have. AI cheats, on rails passing etc etc - to me, it just plays a more enjoyable game of football where it feels like anything can happen and every goal/game has the potential to be different.

I will keep trying with FIFA as it has 'something' and believe me, I do WANT it to be great and I do want to enjoy it as I feel with like 5% more tweaking, it could become an absolutely awesome on pitch experience.

But I'm glad so many people like it - and its a shame that PES and FIFA fans cannot appreciate that the other may like another style of game.

I had 4 injuries in the first 10 games in MM but my players didn't miss more than 1 match until now. I upgraded the fitness bar to 8/10 and now i don't have injuries and players recover their stamina everytime after a game :| I guess i will not upgrade the fitness bar next time too see if i get more injuries and tired players.

Why does Anfield always look like a sack of shit? I play as Liverpool and never look forward to playing there because it looks nothing like it. The crowd are too far away from the pitch. The red/brown 'track' around the pitch is nowhere to be seen and the turf pattern isn't right at all : (

Did some reading up on the sliders yesterday and tried out a few "extreme" custom tactics and set them to my Quick Tactics buttons to switch between them during a match.

I'm genuinely surprised at how well they work. I was a bit sceptical when I fiirst read about them but they really are effective in recreating different styles of football.

I read the offical EA guide on the sliders which gives detailed descriptions of every aspect of the tactics and switching from tactic to tactic, you can immediately see the effect it has on all he players in your team (I was in be-a-pro mode so all my team-mates were cpu controlled), the runs they make, the positions the take up, the types of passing, the speed of play the type of defending.

I was trying a very short passing game with a "safe" attacking approach, and non-agressive, deep defedning. But my team was toiling (I was Norwich). So I switched to high tempo long-ball with aggressive defending, and the game totally changed. It was great to see them play lots of balls over the top and create chances, with Sibierski causing havoc, and the midfield and defence really hustle the other team off the ball.

Very impressed! Never expected it to be so good. Another break-through by EA.

A separate sliders thread would be a good idea. Too bad we can't share files ala PES option files (or can we?).

I'm not sure, but I think you can share sliders with your friends within the game. You have an 'EA Locker' where you can save sliders, screenshots etc and then friends can browse you Locker within the game and I assume, download your files...

As I say, not tested it, but thats what it looked like to me.

Bah! Its no good, I cannot kid myself to like FIFA. :(

I find it dull, frustrating and it doesnt flow like FIFA.

The manager mode is just as dull as nothing happens to your team, no injuries, no point in doing transfers.

The gameplay is 'ok'. I can see they have busted a gut and they are so NEARLY there for me.

What finally made my mind up is sitting here playing a MM game and each time a match kicks off I instantly think "wow, this is great. Looks fab, sounds fab - cannot wait to play the match" - but every game is the same grind, trying to create the same openings etc. I can barely get any shots off - and I know I dont like it as I'm not very good at the game (how you guys play on World Class I'll never know).

I'll be listing this for sale next week methinks.

Mate all I can say is you're not palying it properly. I've never had a footy game flow so well. Had my mate over last night , a true hard core PES , D-Pad player. He was blown away and is now considering getting a 360 just for FIFA. The more I play the more I learn, I'm still a bit crap at dribbling and shielding but once I get those 2 sorted this game has no limits.

The crossing is absolutley horrible, its like watching Jermaine Pennant cross a ball filled with Helium.

I also hate the crossing in general, even though you can occasionally whip out an absolute gem. I also find that ground passing inside the box to be incredibly awkward.

I don't like using assisted through balls or passing, but I detest the way in which [on manual] you have to hold a button for 1/2 seconds to get any amount of power on a pass, by which time you've lost the ball.

what settings do you use for crossing placebo? which do you find to be best, im loving the game, but like others im not to keen on the crosses, the headers are good when they happen, but my crossing has been shockingly bad. do u hold the left bumper when you cross, my crosses always seem to go behind everyone like i cross and am trying to cross to the middle but it crosses to the edge of the box.

any detailed crossing tips would be much appreciated.

All you need to do with crossing is get at a decent angle hold LB and get some power on it

I changed my arena player to Ronaldo last night and then got Ronaldinho in a Utd shirt.Haha that sort of thing happens to me quite a lot, it's when I come out of a mode like a tournament or BAP Seasons.
I had Carlos as my arena player when I started a tournament, but switched him to Rooney once I came out of that tournament, then the next time I went into and quit the tournament I had Carlos in a United shirt.
The same thing happened with Cantona when I leave the BAP Seasons mode, that was pretty cool though having Cantona in a United shirt :DD.

It's uses the arena player you had at the start of the tournament but puts them in the kit of the team your current arena player plays in.

there is also the offside rule needs to be changed in fifa ref blows before i even touch the ball..... should only get call once i touch the ball

Nah...In real football the ref will blow as soon as a player in an offside positon makes a genuine attempt to go for the ball. They rarely wait until the player has touched it.
