FIFA's manual is completely unassisted afaik. Semi is helped by the game slightly, and auto is PES style.
manual is slightly assisted, else it wouldn't work...
semi <-> PES style
auto <-> PES2008 style ;)

You will have to go into more detail.
Why would it not work. The concept of manual aim/manual power works perfectly obviously, since games like Football Kingdom, ISS98 etc have used them. Real life is analog, and football works well there. ;)
So you need to clarify I think.
Also all PES games so far have been completely automatic. You have a base aim of 8 directions, but apart from those the game decides where it will aim, who it will try and pass to etc. it is the exact same concept between PES5/6 and PES2008. 8 directions, and then the game makes all the decisions from there.

On euro 2008 i have been using assisted passing. Is manual something i should really try and work with. Does it improve the game etc? On 09 that is

Young gunz, i have a question about passing, number one did you find it being too accurate, especially in off balance situations?
#2 a lot of people have been talking about player individuality and attributes and EA seem to have put a lot of emphasis on this this year, but has this translated to passing as well? I felt that passing was the least represented part of attributes in fifa and Euro. So for example if you're controlling pirlo or carrick do you feel the difference in their passing ability? and by that i mean a noticeable difference, there should be as much a difference in someone like pirlo's passing with other players as there is with ronaldo's dribbling. I read somewhere that there would be passes that would curl around players if passed by a player with good attributes (not just crosses/corners) did u see any of this?
Well personally i didnt find the passing to accurate in 08, I thought the passing was fine. and there are situations where certain players can curl their pass's around players such as Scholes/Pirlo/Fabregas for example. also when you pass with these the pass's seem to zip more than others i found.
@ Younggun;
How did you find the heading, just watched the new-che video and the viduka header looked good. Proper challenge and movement. Did you find this good aswell, 08/euro it was always a bit static (players already in position and jumping up instead of forward towards the ball).
You just reminded me of a great moment in one of the games. There is clearly been a improvement with the headers now, due to the collision system and also the header animations. the biggest improvement was the players going for the headers though, There was a certain situation where i had broke away on the wing yet there wasnt much support in the box yet i thought i'd still put the ball and a player came charging in and also dived fully to try to get his head onto it, in the end it just skimmed his head and went out for a goal kick but in 08 there would be no way the player would have got near the cross.

David Rutter has mentioned in one of the producers' videos free 360° control would be easy to implement, but it wouldn't work in practice. I don't think this is meant to affect player movement only...
Also I don't think I have that great skills on the analogue sticks, but passing/shooting still is 80% accurate ;)
PES has free passing, too (right stick) It feels "more manual" than FIFA. I'm not able to do even one successful pass!

The same Senderos that got us to the CL final, the same guy that filled in for Kolo in January during the ACN and was solid throughout.Yes he made some mistakes, Kolo and Gallas make mistakes everything that cost us goals but no one is calling for them to be sold.
Just look at the Ajax game, both goals were errors from Kolo and Gallas

just read this post on the official ea forums. Bit more new info that i have not read. Posted by Dale. Im sure he wont mind me copying it to hear.
I was fortunate enough to play a handful of games on fifa09 at i34 this weekend and i must say, first impressions, i am really impressed.
As a big fan of fifa 08 i was wondering how they would improve the game in this release and i was a bit sceptical.
First of all on the loading screen it states in big font 'FIFA 09 - WORK IN PROGRESS' so i imagine they still have the odd tweak and testing to do although i can't be quoted on this because i am not sure when the final build is completed in relation to the release date.
First of all, i picked man united, once again sceptical of how good Ronaldo will be in this release (hoping he is not stupidly good in relation to the rest of the squad). I played around 5 games and tbh i don't think there has been too much improvement to ronaldo which is all good in my opinion. There are a few new nice tricks that i managed to pull off by holding L2 and bashing the right analogue stick which is nice.
The loading screen now comes with tutorials on how to do the tricks so you can practice these in the arena as the game loads. The loading screen also comes with a timer so you know how many seconds it is until you can press start to play the game for those people that care.
The game starts and instantly i am impressed by the improved movement of the players with diagonal runs by the computer players and also some sleek new first touch moves. Everything just feels so good.
At this point i will add that all those players that try shooting from the half way line in online matches all the time, you're screwed! I tried it a fair few times, seems to be more difficult if possible at all! I'm sure i gave it a full power square chip from the half way mark which landed safely in the keepers arms. Once again i didn't play the game enough to see if this will be the case all the time, i just hope it is.
The switch player system seems to be a lot more reactive, i don't know about you guys but in fifa 08 i found a lot of times where i was back tracking with a batch of defenders and it just seemed to take a long time to select the one i actually want! I suppose it's hard to explain how switching players can be improved, but it has in some weird way, maybe the ball to player detection area has been improved in someway or another.
Overall i am well impressed with this latest release and i am intrigued with what Konami have come up with as they are all bigging PES2009 to claim the crown back from fifa this year. Personally i can't see it happening but i am always open minded until i play the two releases. I can certainly say that i have fifa09 on pre-order though.

well we will have to agree to disagree. But i think the majority of Gooners feel the same as me. And you just ask opposition supporters if they like to see Senderos in the starting line - up. I dont give a shit about the nets anyway. Long tape is a nice little touch and makes a difference to the appearence of the game. it will make u feel like u really are playing with ronalo or torres etc. Obviously gameplay comes first but it is just good to see little things being added.

Hey young gunz thanks for answering all these questions. Sounds good about the passing. Forgot I had one more question to ask which I have heard nothing about as of yet, have the menus has the overlays which display player attributes been improved or is it the same as last year? ie in pro evo you could instantly compare two players' stats complete with color coding (95 and up = red, 90 and up = orange etc) have they done anything like this? Thanks!

I wonder how many of the 250 fixes that was already fixed in Euro 2008. The fixes they talk about is obviously from FIFA 08 to 09. Because it sounds like some things are kept from euro, like the response times as I understand it from people that played it.
Placebo
12 August 08, 20:01
I don't think there are many because IMO Euro2008 is a very poor game in comparison to Fifa08. Obviously I'm basing that solely on singleplayer because that's all I play, but many aspects of Euro2008 are simply broken. I played it again today for a couple of hours to see if I got any more out of it and again I just can't stand it, horrible experience compared to Fifa08. Passing, movement, tackling especially, all very flawed, manual passing is absolutely butchered compared to Fifa08 which has manual passing working really well. AI especially against underdog opponents is perhaps the worst AI I have witnessed in a football game for a long, long time, awfully implemented.

mistake in his eyes because he doesnt have and want a ps3 and i can see ALOT of pissed of 360 fans complaining if ever it was that ps3 exclusive EA have been talking about.
here is a thought aimed at ps3 users. now that we know more or less what ps3's Home is all about, what if we can actually use our "Home" avater/character in BE A PRO in fifa!!
create yourself in Home and use that same character playing online in be a pro. now that would be brillient! That could be the exclsuive feature for the ps3 version. it wouldnt piss off the 360 fans soo much but it will certainly make alot of ps3 users excited! Add to the fact that this exclsuive mode is likely to have somthing to do with Home rather then a full fledge online feature

The NHL Be A Pro MMO thing again I keep praying is in fifa 09!
EA Sports, specifically its Vancouver branch, is changing that classic paradigm by delivering what they're calling sports gaming's first Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) mode, branded as EA Sports Hockey League in NHL 09.
Such a feature would be great, but I hope EA first of all makes sure the 10v10 mode is working properly. After all, 5v5 had its issues

other than that again, content means nothing to me tbh, again that is personal preference (swings and roundabouts) but with a mode as big as the create your own player and take him online to be a star is such a huge step in a football game, that is the magnitude i am talking NOTHING ELSE :))

But... if sony are only just opening HOME for another closed beta which will last for a few months usually. And fifa is out what... september october time? That doesn't really leave them a chance to add HOME as a feature for the PS3 players when most of them won't be able to use home?

I'd be worried if Adam was keener than Suff anyways, IMO Adam was still very positive about the game, whilst being very honest about his opinion, as he said a number of times he perhaps had expected some kind of revolution as with UCL - Fifa08 rather than a further movement in evolution as from Fifa08 - EURO*
*obviously I include that example despite me personally thinking Euro is crap and not a step forward from Fifa08.

I was surprised Adam expected some form of revolution in Fifa 09. It's quite clear that the foundations of the new game engine were put in place in Fifa 07, and really expanded on in Fifa 08. A steady evolution of the game is what most of us expected over the next few years, much the same as PES in it's heyday.

I think EA's Be-A-Pro online could be manipulated into a mode like this in future. they just need to get the online structure right.
(i don't want to talk about konami's online issues here but let's say, it left a lot to be desired in 2008...)
Be A Pro kind of rewards you with a higher rating if you're involved enough in the game etc. except it's all done offline. (in euro2008 and fifa08).
Fifa are doing be-a-pro though 4 seasons this year (offline), and i'm betting next year they have plans to take that concept online.
uploading finest moments online has always been possible in fifa next gen. it's very rudimentary though and the camera angles are crap.

I'm dubious how much of a mode "Legends" is tbh. The way they describe it makes me think its just be-a-pro with created players for online friendlies. Hardly a mode really. Be-A-Legend/Pro stands or falls with AI, not sure which will be better.
Although I got bored quite quickly of be-a-captain. But then again playing with england/national teams in general never gets me interested. Becoming a Liverpool player could be a lot of fun though.

Nothing in the PES09 list gets me excited. The rather nebulous wordage about improving the control system at first took my interest, but if it was revolutionary, they'd be blowing a thousand trumpets about it...and they're not. So it'll just be tweaks on the current dated, scripted system.
From the news we've had so far of the 2 games, I'd expect FIFA09 to be superior to PES09 in nearly every respect. It remains to be seen which games' AI is better, but I don't anticipate either being particularly good.
If PES can crack multi-player on-line play, it might be worth a look, but up 'til now, they've shown remarkable incompetence in on-line coding and are further behind FIFA in this area more than any other.

Sadly not.
I get the feeling that both BAL and BAP will be equally half assed, in terms of how complete and satisfying a mode they will be, we already know that BAP is going to feature utterly shite, utterly contrived, utterly unrealistic "match objectives" such as don't get caught offside, have 4 shots, etc. etc. that for me will almost certainly ruin the experience.

we already know that BAP is going to feature utterly shite, utterly contrived, utterly unrealistic "match objectives" such as don't get caught offside, have 4 shots, etc. etc. that for me will almost certainly ruin the experience.
Shit, really? I'd not read that. They destroyed the CYC experience in Euro08 by having you "compete" against your own team-mates and a points scoring system that defied belief. I had been thinking that the BAP mode without those elements would make for some reasonable off-line fun, albeit for only 4 season.
But objectives? Who do they think they are? Codemasters? It's not that far from sharks head. I can see it now....your match objective today is to balance a cabbage on your head for the entire first half. Fail, and your dropped from the FA Cup final.
Placebo
14 August 08, 21:14
Well I'm not 100% sure if that has been confirmed, however it seems fifa09 BAP is cloned from Fifa08 current gen BAP and that had those rediculously silly objectives. Maybe I'll turn out to be wrong, really, really, hope so.
No saving replays to hard drive? Thats shit. EA Sports World is shit. When will they learn this?
Chris Davies
14 August 08, 21:19
I find it boring to play BAP/BAL to be honest, I was trying to get into it on Euro but it's just not the same as controlling the whole team. All credit to them for including it, I'll have a play with it when I'm bored, but for me traditional games are where it's at. I have much more fun playing manager mode than doing anything else, although online leagues are great when you fill them up with fellow Evo-Webbers, and an online manager mode would be my favourite mode ever.
I'm disappointed that manager mode hasn't had any alterations - I'd be happy if they just added playoffs to the lower leagues, to be honest.
winston
14 August 08, 21:24
If the objectives were done in a realistic way (ie. manager's general instructions, such as "your to man-mark so-and-so", or "get it out to our left winger as often as possible to see if he can exploit their weak right back", general tactical things, that would be fine...even good, as it would give you more of a specific tactical role on which you can be assessed, and also good to see if your AI controlled left winger does indeed do a good job as well.
But "get 4 shots in or else"...they can shove that up their arse.
Placebo
14 August 08, 21:24
No saving replays to hard drive? Thats shit. EA Sports World is shit. When will they learn this?
They know we hate not being able to save replays to HDD, they don't care, they want to force us to use EASW for "marketing" reasons. I find it hugely disappointing and will try to do everything in my FSB power to get them to allow us to save replays, even if it's simply save them and then upload once the match is finished.
There's a poll on the EA forums to allow replay saving to HDD: http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/fifa-09-next-gen/329945-petition-save-replays-hdd.html
Currently 81 vote yes with only 3 voting no. I'd strongly suggest anyone with an EA account votes on the poll. As soon as FSB allows polls I'll make sure that this issue is the first one I suggest to the team.
But "get 4 shots in or else"...they can shove that up their arse.
Indeed.

well placebo and other manager mode fans, you must be more excited about PES i guess because according to there pree release, they have done some major changes to it.
According to the press released they've made three extremely minor changes to ML, Fifa's manager mode is still a massively more involving mode than ML, despite its own lack of improvement this time around.
Yes placebo, and you know why soon :DD
but nice list, i like alot chromeo, duffy, gonzales, MGMT, the fratellis and the ting ting
Personally I can't stand game music and turn it off the moment I boot up the game, any game :)

how can you not listen to music? do you mean just in the game?
winston
14 August 08, 23:20
Actually, I virtually never listen to any music any more. It's not that I don't like music, I just find I always listen to talk shows on radio (Radio 5 and 4) and never listen to my CDs or mp3s any more. I'm even learning to play violin (and occassionally tinker with the piano), yet never sit down and listen to music. I can't really explain why.

I'm not sure if they've all been posted yet, but Suff has to receive them from Adam, edit and convert them, then upload to my FTP and then I have to mirror them and post them with hugely entertaining and fantastic blog posts, it's quite time consuming you know ;)
Also considering Adam works at Ubisoft and is no doubt in the midst of GC preparations.
Suff is in the midst of doing his PHD.
I'm working for Bohemia Interactive in the midst of GC preparations, plus I'm way behind schedule on my Fifa09 data editing tasks (due in no small part by getting zero help from Sheffield Utd fans).
So there's my list of excuses, pretty decent I'm sure you agree ;)

I've played games on a 360 but never seen the online side of things.
The invite system sounds very good but I don't have a problem with the messaging via XMB. Works quite well in FIFA 08 (which is what I mostly play)as I just see the message pop up in the top corner and then head straight for the lobby the game will be held in. Obviously not as quick but it's still easy.
Why can't they fix GK kicking? Just watched Chelsea-Arsenal and Cech kicking(from hands) with right feet.
Some improvements for set pieces, but still doesn't look that you can brought up those players you want.
Hopefully I'm wrong, but these kind of things are really annoying and eating realism much more than "dumb goal nets" or "referees missing".

BAP/CYC with a few mates is the best mode ever made

There's a much larger range of motion, or at least that's the way it felt. I was much less inhibited by things like invisible rails or CPU-forced runs. Even though this has been a focus of FIFA for the last few years, it has clearly seen improvements here with 09.
Eases the pain. :)

After taking in all the news we've had so far, I'm just a bit frustrated that EA can't/wont get the real basics right. Such as:
- Player names and numbers on kits. Is it that hard to use the real fonts like PES has been doing for years?
- Is it that hard to get the league structures right, e.g. play-offs, conferences in MLS etc? As with the above point, EA have the real licenses so why so little attention to detail?
- Saving replays to HDD? Another case of shameless self promotion by EA with EASportsWorld rather than giving the fans a much needed practical feature.
- Allocating a home stadium to any team team in the editor? A simple solution to the Stadio de Las Artes problem, but sounds like this option is not included yet again.
I'm counting down the days to Fifa 09 none the less, but it's frustrating that EA ignore such basics, especially with the resources at their disposal.:brick::brick::brick:

The next big addition to the features list of FIFA Soccer 09 is 10-on-10 football. Similar to the idea behind EA Sports Hockey League in NHL 09, ten players on each side of the ball (all but the goalie) are controlled by a human. Players can change their camera angle to their liking, and yes, the Be A Pro prospective is in there. While I didn't get to try it for myself, the developer described a scenario similar to that of NHL. Novice players begin the game by following the ball around in a giant mass until they realize that playing their roles brings quicker success. Real football is key.
