When will it be updated?

No, it's for the guys like me who watch Match of the Day and put FIFA on straight afterwards to play online. It's purely for online games and nothing else, mainly ranked matches. I'm really, really looking forward to it; it's something I've wanted to see in a football game for yonks.

You can't get any closer to "playing" Match of the Day than that.

Do you really think it will be that quick to update? The cynic in me doubts that very much.

I also worry that this feature depends entirely on the judgement of the people who score the players each week.

For example, take the Liverpool match at the weekend - Torres is man of the match and takes all the plaudits but there were a hell of a lot of good performances in red for that game so I think it'll be just based on goals scored and not much else.

Perhaps Placebo has a view on this - as an original stat man for the release maybe he's also to keep on an eye on "his" teams too?

I hope it's not like the Euro 2008 BAP ratings on CYC. If a player scores then he gets a great score, even though the player didn't do anything else.

I'm hoping it will be Saturday night but of course that's probably hoping a bit too much, so I'm guessing it will be Sunday or Monday at some point. But it's once a week, so there's no point in doing it mid-week for example. You might as well do it as close to Saturday as possible.

You worry about the judgement of the people doing it but the data so far has been very good, even Milanista (who is very good when it comes to Italian football, he downloads the FM updates and fixes all of the Italian problems himself) said that there's some stats in there EA have done well to get right.

At the level the Live Season updates are (Premier League etc. only), they have very experienced people who have done this kind of thing before, whereas below that they will look for anyone to help because the guys who are the best at this line of work aren't going to go and watch Chester v Grimsby, and it's harder to find fans of those clubs.

All the data I've seen in FIFA 09 is sound - certainly more accurate than in PES2009 from the screenshots I've seen of the stats in that - so I'm certain the Live Season updates will be sound as well. I cannot wait, it's one of the features I'm looking forward to the most.

Trance: all i know is i'm able to adjust the amount of curl with consistency on my free kicks and corners. that seemed to be the main complaint. for me it's perfect. i've not nailed it each time. but i've not been far off many times.

i was just pointing out that the ridiculous curl you get is from taking freekicks the same way as 08. it's definitely been redone more like how ou aim while charging you serve in top spin 3. that drew criticism too as it varies from player to player how long you hold the curl/dip/backspin down.


To be honest I've not had any problems getting consistency on my curling, and I've not seen anyone complain about it. ;)

Also, FIFA08 had no problems with huge amounts of curl. In fact, curling in FIFA08, especially with the better players like Ronaldinho and such, needed to be more to be realistic. Also FIFA08 had no problems with the curl amount reacting so much to the pace of the ball. In FIFA09 the ball starts curling more as the ball looses pace, which is realistic, but it is way too exaggerated. You'll instead see the ball have almost no curl until suddenly it will whip to the side. There are also cases where the ball will not curl at all for 25 meters, even though the ball is spinning like crazy, and sometimes you can even see a hint of the ball curling slightly slightly in the opposite direction at first, to suddenly after 25 meters start suddenly move in the proper direction.


So there are alot of problems with curl and freekicking.

Also, I've struck several freekicks, and I see no indication that they've changed the system from 08 in terms of how to operate the curl stick. I will power up for the shot, and immediately press the stick in the direction I want the ball to curl, and then just hold it there until the player shoots. It gets alot of curl, and I don't see why you would feel the need to let go of the stick in a certain timing, and what you feel you achieve with this?

Until I see a dev or official guide/manual describing the system, I've got a hard time thinking that they've suddenly changed one thing to be completely different.

Also, you don't mention corners, so does that mean that you feel they aren't using the same system? That would be highly inconsistent, since a corner is a freekick from the corner flag essentially. :)

And again, I've struck alot of corners, and there is no need to let go of the stick at any point go get a good strike with lots of curl. The "timing" thing they had in 08 was that you had to press the curl direction as soon as possible after the powering up had started, to get the most curl.


Once I can play the game, I will take lots of freekicks and compare the trajectories with various timings and releases of the stick.


If you've played the full game, does in fact the curling still have the same problems as the demo in terms of the programing of the curl and the inconsistent flight paths that are very unrealistic? :)

I've been a PES fan for years but went and bought the 360 as it was cheap and have taken friday afternoon off so not played the demo so will be more excited when I kick off for the first time.

One of the 8,000 videos released by the Korean website has him creating his Be a Pro character, that's essentially the exact same system you use to create your own footballers which can then be transferred directly into a team or made available as a "free transfer" for you or other teams to sign :)

Well one has to assume it's the same as Fifa08 in which case it's very easy to add/remove players from international teams, as well as change squad numbers, tactics, kick takers etc. etc.

Also, FIFA08 had no problems with huge amounts of curl. In fact, curling in FIFA08, especially with the better players like Ronaldinho and such, needed to be more to be realistic. Also FIFA08 had no problems with the curl amount reacting so much to the pace of the ball. In FIFA09 the ball starts curling more as the ball looses pace, which is realistic, but it is way too exaggerated. You'll instead see the ball have almost no curl until suddenly it will whip to the side. There are also cases where the ball will not curl at all for 25 meters, even though the ball is spinning like crazy, and sometimes you can even see a hint of the ball curling slightly slightly in the opposite "direction at first, to suddenly after 25 meters start suddenly move in the proper direction.


So there are alot of problems with curl and freekicking.

Also, I've struck several freekicks, and I see no indication that they've changed the system from 08 in terms of how to operate the curl stick. I will power up for the shot, and immediately press the stick in the direction I want the ball to curl, and then just hold it there until the player shoots. It gets alot of curl, and I don't see why you would feel the need to let go of the stick in a certain timing, and what you feel you achieve with this?

Until I see a dev or official guide/manual describing the system, I've got a hard time thinking that they've suddenly changed one thing to be completely different.

Also, you don't mention corners, so does that mean that you feel they aren't using the same system? That would be highly inconsistent, since a corner is a freekick from the corner flag essentially. :)

And again, I've struck alot of corners, and there is no need to let go of the stick at any point go get a good strike with lots of curl. The "timing" thing they had in 08 was that you had to press the curl direction as soon as possible after the powering up had started, to get the most curl.


Once I can play the game, I will take lots of freekicks and compare the trajectories with various timings and releases of the stick.

Adding to gomito's question (which is a good question), does the quality of the opposition really make a difference? This ruined Manager Mode on 08 for me, as it was just as easy to beat Chelsea as it was to beat Barnet (maybe harder to beat crap teams when the underdog logic thing kicked in).

A further question regarding that would be - Do different team's custom tactics make a difference to the way they play?
Do Arsenal play one and two touch passing, give the man in posession options etc while Bolton/Boro will play the long ball a lot?

They also only picked out the good ones. But FIFA still has pretty bad faces in general, but it is so much harder for them to make it look good because they're not using the old technique with simple mesh and photo on top. If they have a good photo, then the face in PES will look pretty good but very lifeless.

Edit: Those pictures do lie a little, because every FIFA player has huge noses and that's not how it looks in the demo. I think the camera plays some tricks on the FIFA ones.

With regard to the player faces I think it's 50-50 between PES and Fifa. Some of the PES faces are well off the mark, but the PES diehard gloss over that fact. I think PES has the edge in player likeness but the skin tones, colour pallete and overall effect looks better in Fifa, especially player expressions. The PES faces are starting to look a little dated and I wonder how long Konami will contiune with the photo technique?

What I do find funny is how all of a sudden the PES hardcore have become obsessed with the graphical inadequacies of Fifa. It's all about the gameplay, remember? And Fifa excels in this department.

30 games a season at Ivy Lane for me a season as Coventry in the Championship and 25 for a team with Ivy Lane as their home stadium in the Premiership.
There's more variation than 08, but I just hope that Ivy Lane doesn't become as repetitive as De Les Artes did.

Sorry if I ask again but can you select German as a menu/commentary language in the UK version? Because in the EU version have plenty languages (even polish,russian und hungarian) except english, which is my favorite commentary language!

It has been confirmed that the Dutch version has English commentary this time, in contrary to Fifa 08. So EA listen agains to the complains!

In online Be A Pro, its 10 vs 10. There’s no goalkeeper involved. Did you think about including that and how would it work?

That’s definitely one of our targets for the future. The reason we didn’t get to it this year is the goalkeeper is a whole new dimension. We need to work with real goalkeepers to get their thoughts on what goes behind it. It would require us to, in a sense, change the way the game is played. It’s not only about pressing buttons, but also about positioning.

But would that really work considering the goalkeeper is at one end of a fairly large field? Wouldn’t the involvement of a player controlling the goalkeeper be limited?
I don’t think so. Other EA Sports games like NHL have done it. But they’ve had the time to sit down and work out how it works.

What do you think of the competition – Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer franchise?
Well, they’re very, very strong competitors and they have a very good game. But what consumers are telling us is we’ve taken strides to take the game forward in each department, whereas Konami have stood still. They’ve been making small changes to the gameplay and it still plays very well, but it just doesn’t feel like they’re addressing the power of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We believe that this is something we are doing.

How could that work? The UK version hast danish,swedish,norwegian and english. The EU version hast every damn language in the EU except english. And I'm sure as hell that you will get the EU version without english...

Could be because most people in Germany, France and so on generally don't care as much for the English language as Scandinavians do. Scandinavians didn't have English in 08 and there were a lot of complains about it so it seems they've changed it. We don't dub movies and so on up north which is probably one reason why English is often preferred to us.

I thought from the demo that EA would've managed to remove the players turning and seemingly dancing rather than merely collecting the ball - sometimes they knock it off the pitch with their heel. If there's any consolation, at least the cpu is affected too.

When I modify the auto switching to zero, I expect the computer to NEVER (NEVER EVER EVER EVER) CHANGE MY FUCKING PLAYER. But no... it has to change it. Great. Whoever was responsible for that at EA Sports deserves a slap upside the head.
It's incredibly dumb when you play with 2 or more human players on the same team: on lots of occasions have my mate and I played a through ball to one another, only to find that the game has switched the controller of the recipient, meaning you end up passing to yourself (which in turn fucks up the run that you or your mate is making.)

Not sure but i think only the ps3 pal versions have all the languages. I can take a guess looking at the demos , the 360 demo didn't come with portuguese language but the ps3 had it available.

That is indeed very annoying but I found out that if you use Super Cancel you can correct this. It takes getting used to and does the trick in the end but should have been sorted by EA.

But in PES you could solve it by setting the switching to semi fixed and that way it would only switch when you wanted. I would love to see FIFA implement semi fixed player switch.

Jsut come back from my mates house. 2 more have converted to the cause. They played about 15 games in a row. 1 of them was another who 'cant play fifa'. I was nearly late for work myself from playing it earlier.

It really is a great game.

Player switching is a bit off sometimes though, seems to cycle through the players rather then go directly to the man u want when defending.
Still havent worked out this advantage system either, sometimes it plays on and sometimes it dont. Havent worked out why yet.

From what I have seen so far with the advantage, it tends to play the advantage if the ball is passed to another player, if you are fouled but recover to run on then it will pull the play back for a free kick.

Probably not right but what I think so far.
