They did not review PES which either means that they still haven't got a review copy or that they simply think it's not worth reviewing.

I'm very disappointed that the CL license isn't going to be used on the PS2/PSP versions of the game, I think that's absolutely criminal... Like a lot of things in PES actually...

Basically they say that it's the best football game on handheld Chris.
To be fair i have to say that it's a very short review...they are always short for the handhelds and they never give a score (which is strange).
I've also read the review of the Fifa handheld version and here they say that it wouldn't surprise them if lots of PES lovers would prefer FIFA this year...strange...i guess both reviews are from different persons...but there are no names underneath the reviews (which is a pity).

Last year i bought both handheld versions and this after i was enthousiastic about FIFA on PS3...i did not like the handheld version of FIFA08...but it seems the new one is much better...

It has nothing to do with him getting it early, he'd posted that he had the game (and provided screenshots) but wasn't sure when he'd get chance to actually play the game, someone replied if they had it they'd just go play it no matter what, which is when he mentioned his wife was sick so he had other responsibilities than just playing the game :)

That's the plan, hopefully nothing else goes wrong. It's incredibly frustrating to work for a FIFA blog and watch other people playing the game and writing up pieces before you, but there's nothing we can do.

The game will still be in stores for the release date (well a couple of days before as normal). The PS3 version was the first to press, the 360 version has had to be delayed for some reason but it's only a couple of days delay maximum.

Appears to be better then the demo but im only 2 and a half games in. Just scored against Bolton. Had been 0-0 then Bale got free down the left. I watched the replay and you can see Modric standing around then making a late run. As i went to cross the CB jumped in the air to try and block it but the cross went low. Modders ghosted into the space he left, let it run across his body then side footed it into the right corner. It was quite exciting.

Im not having any issues with response times, and the graphics seem better then the demo.

The shooting is much more refined & huge improvement on the demo - BUT, the camera does zoom in now as soon as the ball crosses the line. This may not be a huge problem for most - in fact, it may not even be noticeable to some, but there was delay in the zoom on the demo, which meant you saw the ball hit the back of the net before the camera zoomed for the celebration - this has gone for the main game, and for me personally, it does take a little of the satisfaction away from scoring, which is a shame.

This is just a shame. I think I stuck on FIFA 08 for another year just because the stupid camera :@ The MAIN reason why I hated EURO was the camera that zoomed in after scoring. Football is about scoring right? So why we can't see the ball hits the back of the net? I just hate the freaking celebration mode!!!!! :@

There's nothing wrong with the mode, but the camera... I had nothing to complain if the camera was like FIFA 08 after scoring + celebration mode.

In London you should have plenty of options for picking it up and earlier than release day by the sounds of it on PS3, a lot of people pre order and get it either on the day or the day before but there is no guarantee...

If you're a known good customer or know someone, I have had a lot of rentals and games early but I know a few of the girls in there... Try your local game shops first rather than High street names, they should have them in by Wed's-Thursday...

Ok positives

-Response times 100x better than 08
-Animations a gazillion times better than 08
-Ball physics, far more weight and pace to my eyes
-Lighting
-Sound effects, slightly better than 08
-Shooting miles better than 08
-player models are slimmer and more life like
-crowd more animated
-facial models vastly improved
-headers

Animations are still behind but they dont make a great game, just make it look nicer.

FIFA loooks fantastic with those superb animations but it plays average to me.

I think 83% for FIFA is about right having played the demo. i cannot comment on the PES score because I have not played it, however it seems all the scoring is aimed at the gameplay and once again it appears that PES is the more rewarding game in this department.
The more I play the more I can see the obvious repetitive goals, slow response (a tiny bit improved on 08) and the total frustration that has plagued the previous 2 efforts.

You first put the demo on and you think wow, its amazing, shooting is improved and the animations are brilliant, but the very heart of the engine is still FIFA08, its just slighty quicker and a bit better looking.

It's overall a better game than 08 but its not giving me the buzz it did when first playing the demo and the FIFA series has never given me the buzz that PES ever did.

I sold 08 because it frustrated me, i sold Euro because it did the same so I know having now played the demo that FIFA is probably not for me.

A great effort and will be enjoyed by so many, and I know for those that like it will adore it but not for me i am afraid:((

I have been playing ISS since the snes, and up unitl last years played every edition(usually the WE version.
For the last year i havent really touched a footy game pro being shit and Fifa, while good didnt really capture me.
No doubt it has faults to be discovered but its the closest resembelance to football that i've encountered in my gaming life

I havent seen the same goal twice, or even the same shot technique. I played Man U, couldnt get out of my half, played Bolton was 0-0 in the 75, against Arsenal we was goin end to end. If you want to play on the break, you can and its devastating, but so is the passing game done right. Gameplay seems varied, and quite deep.

I think the best thing i can say about this game is that today while playing it its made me get emotional, miss placed passes, fouls, misses, goals. This is what makes football special to me, both in a game and in real life. Fifa has never done this to me before.

Well if you're new to FIFA remember to use the close control button often to get faster reaction times with the ball, and don't use the sprint button as much as in PES. I think those two points are very important for old PES people.

Think the tackling intensity has been toned down a bit, but the refs have been doing a good job so far. Havent managed to decide if the advantage has been sorted out, its been used properly and badly so far.

Shooting i like, Finesse shot's working well, but not immediatly if im sprinting which is realistic, cause of the body position. Havent really let any fly from far yet, but Modric did oass one into the net from 6 yards which looked stunning, just let it roll across him then opened up his foot casually.

german gaming site cynamite.de has posted a review of Fifa 09. The final score they gave is 9 out of 10.

Positives:
- best controls ever in a Fifa game
- best possible mix out of responsiveness and realistic player physics
- tricks require good timing, so that even really skilled players such as Kaka cannot pass defenders "automatically"
- great ball physics and collisions make the game even more realistic
- the collisions look breathtaking and each one of them is unique
- if the pitch is wet, the ball will decelerate when rolling on the pitch but will accelerate when the ball bounces of the ground
- the be a pro mode is really exciting and motivating

Negatives:
- first touch control is not really good, the ball bounces of the players' foot way too often

Closing comments:

No doubt about it, this is the best Fifa ever!

It's no offence to you, any game gets worse when you play it so often that you start seeing the same things. I played FIFA non-stop, I played it longer than I've played PES for since I was in college (which was a long old time ago), but a couple of months before Euro 2008 was released it was starting to grate, and by the time Euro 2008 was released I'd had enough.

I don't find this at all, seems fine, the player momentum may make it seem unresponsive but that's just realistic. Also, if you're sprinting then the player will obviously perform the action after you press the button as they need to reach the ball

-Animation cycle still makes it feel clunky
Not that sure what you mean, but if you mean that animations can't be interrupted then what's bad about that? I'd rather have that than ugly animations which can be "cancelled" at almost any point, making them look even worse ala PES

-headers still lack power
I have done some very powerful headers, with players steaming in with late runs and powering it in and defensive headers seem to go a fair distance with X/B, but I agree about standing headers being a bit weak

-ball still feels floaty and light with passing and crossing
That's too vague, the passing seems very realistic and the crossing has been especially improved for 09, they can really be whipped in Beckham-esque now
I think some people's views on how heavy/light/floaty a football is is blurred by what it was like in PES, with the ball knocking players over etc. A football is light and hangs in the air for some time when played long.

-shooting is improved but just never gives me the same satisfaction as any PES ever......still feels weightless
Again, the weight/floatiness of a football issue here.
I think the shots get too much backspin, but apart from that they seem just as good as they have in PES
I think the fact that the keepers are fairly realistic in 09 makes shooting frustrating to some people because in PES the keepers would let shots in from anywhere, on FIFA you need to think more about when to shoot/where to shoot from. Finesse shots very impressive to me on 09, their trajectory seems very realistic.
PES "controlled shots" (essentially the same concept as FIFA "finesse shots") never impressed me, and you never felt like the player was trying to wrap their foot around the ball to bend it into the corners, it just felt like a less powerful shot with a bit more accuracy.Replies in bold.

I appreciate that Chris but I dont really like being refered to as flip flopper which may well have been a reminder to you but not very well conveyed.

By seabass's own admission, PES has become an arcade game, still very enjoyable in my book and still more satisfying to bag one, but when you see Drogba celebrating for London blues it kinda just detracts from the whole experience.

FIFA is at least authentic and attempts to simualte the game very well. Is it more fun....well thats questionable for me
although i would not like to miss out on competitive, fair play games wher it may well excel.

Also, I'd rather the first touch is too bad than too good. I always prefer things being worse than real life rather than the opposite (superhuman, exaggerated etc).


Looking forward to trying this, Despite the niggles I had with the demo when I first tried it, I've sort of gotten used to it, and me and my brother have had some very nice (tho short) demo games both versus each other and against the CPU on Pro difficulty. It's great that I've noticed the important change in AI behavior, now you can beat teams on PRO difficulty aswell, and so far no 3-minute solo runs from the CPU players.


I'm surprised actually, my brother and I sat and played for a really long time, and he usually doesn't want to play against anyone, just against the CPU. We both had that "just one more game" thing. :)

Picked up a copy today from that shop in walthamstow (long journey!), and after playing it for a couple of hours with a mate can say that it is a SERIOUS game, my mate and myself have been proper PES nuts over the previous years and used to hate on fifa, but I gotta say this is soooo much better than PES, even my mate who was the biggest pes enthusiast was saying how he loved fifa 09.

Played 5-6 games, first one was portsmouth vs my mate as barcelona, n I beat him 3-2, Defoe is really good on the game, very pacey.

Played as tottenham man city n liverpool aswel from the prem, liverpool by far the best, man city were quite good aswell, but tottenham were just like real life tottenham, full of promise but quite poor!

Will try get some screenshots up for those doubters out there, so if you lot have any requests I'll try put em up.

The game looks so bad when they play it like that. They play it like it was PES they have put in their console. You need to play decent build up play. That's what this game is all about.

you really have to play this like a real game of footy. i used the shield on the edge of the box in combination with the right stick with drogba. un-fucking-touchable. people make serious runs around you when you do that.

also freekick curl is fine. hold your desired curl when the bar is charging. you don't hold it for the whole time. it's kinda like serving in top spin 3. it's really good.

Rain though is a great addition for me, I always liked it on PES (made the grass look greener, and the lighting just a bit duller/more realistic I think) and with it making a difference to the ball physics on FIFA (and maybe player physics on slide tackles) it should be even better :)).

I really hope that Coventry get a generic English style stadium instead of the Estadio de les Artes which looked nothing like the Ricoh, or any other stadium in the Championship for that matter, yet almost all the teams had it as their ground. That would be a major dent in my enjoyment of Manager Mode if that isn't sorted. I was completely fed up of playing about 40 games a season at the same stadium!

If possible would someone who has the game be able to check which stadium Coventry have been assigned? Cheers :))

It does snow in S. America. It's all about elevation. And sometimes not. In fact Patagonia (in Argentine) snows. It's right near the south pole. They have penguins and all. In Chile as well, etc. I agree about Africa though unless they play on Mt. Kilamanjaro :)) All in all, I welcome weather changes wholeheartedly. Adds a new dimension to the game. And at very least looks different.

An 8.9 from IGN (In business with Konami) is a very amazing score. Had it not been for their involvement (ads) in PES, they probably would have given it a 9.2 - 9.5, my guess. What they should have done (besides be unbiased) is given Fifa 2009 an 8. 2 so that they could give PES 2009 an 8.5 or so. Big mistake cause now they are forced to give PES 2009 at the very least a 9.0 ! And even that may be too close to an 8.9 so to be safe maybe theyll give it a 9.4. Problem is it will be too obvious and they will raise yet more consumer eyebrows. They messed up!:r1

Managed to grab a copy yesterday for PS3 thanks to Fernandez.
A proper simulation, quality. I started manager mode with Tottenham Hotspurs. The board expects me to finish in the top 3 and win a domestic cup.
My only problem with the game is when you are fouled and your teammate quickly regains control of the ball and you are on the attack, referee blows his whistle and stops the game for a free kick. This was in the demo as well.
Finally I found that the game looks sharper at 720p(PS3). 1080P looked blurry for some reason.
