Let go of the sprint button!
If you're coming straight from PES it's a hard thing to let go. A very, very hard thing to let go, in-fact I still curse PES for giving the habit to me over the last ten years. But footballers don't run full-pelt all game. PES encourages you to hold down the sprint button from start to finish.
Only press sprint when you're in space, or you will constantly run into people and lose the ball.

Excactly, wel explained Chris. My m8 must read this because I have tried to explain this to him when he constantly loses the ball.
Let go of PES and embrace Fifa, it feels like sacrilege but needs to be done to enjoy this gem. Just think 'real footy'...

Had a weird bug, playing as Madrid, I had Gago sent off for a second yellow (didn't even remember him getting a first yellow so it's possible he made two fouls in the same period of play and when play was brought back he got 2x yellows) anyways at the end of the match he got MOM, scored a penalty in the shootout and in the stats wasn't listed as being booked once let alone twice.
Oh and IMO the freekick ball physics when not doing a power freekick has to be considered a bug, the movement is like that of a 50p plastic football you buy at the beach, it's funny because the rest of the ball physics is absolutely spot on.

After reading CB's comment about his Dad scoring a low shot, I have just been shooting in the arena, just taking low driven shots with a tap of B and they do go in quite a bit! They are actually effective - they need to be placed very well though.

I only use the sprint button when running into space. Whenever i turn with the ball, the player takes time to respond to my input, for example left, which gets me thinking "Ok I need to turn the other way now because the cpu is heading left". Then I press up or down but as soon as I do so the player decides to turn left and the ball is gone.

I am loving the Custom Cameras!!!!
Makes the game even better for me - Fantastic!!! if only you could choose the angle like you used to be able to do in PES - It would be perfect!!!!
you get a great angel in the broadcast Camera - but I don't like having the other side of the pitch looking so far away - can't get used to it.
Its stuff like this that make football games for me - So I am well happy.
Also with the gameplay itself - the last ditch tackles/passing/keeping the ball in play. Makes a huge difference!!! really great.

well ive played the demo all day and my impressions are, yes its better. a lot of thing that annoyed me in fifa 2008 have been improved.
control of the ball is better, the feeling of being in control is better, off the ball is better, shooting feels more realistic.
great!!
hold on lets go back and play pes2008. omfg its so much better than fifa 2009 its scary
i feel in control of the players, response is superb its scary. i had convinced myself ifa was the way to go but now........

11 September 08, 22:40
My impressions:
Very good game, feels more natural and fluid. My only problem is that the players seem to look a little skinny, as opposed to apeish in 08. From far it looks great though. They even rated Ambrosini better than Gattuso - HUGE credit to the Milan researcher there.
2 minutes is hard to play, but I've managed to create some beautiful plays. The passing feels a lot 'heavier', meaning more realistic. The collisions are great too, but I wish they gave a few more advantages. I found shooting to be great too, not too hard and not too easy. Have seen some great saves by GKs, nothing dodgy yet.
Another problem is SLIGHT slowdown during the match, but very slight. Hopefully it will be polished up in October.
Very good:D

Oh and IMO the freekick ball physics when not doing a power freekick has to be considered a bug, the movement is like that of a 50p plastic football you buy at the beach, it's funny because the rest of the ball physics is absolutely spot on.
I've seen some videos of the freekicks from way back when, and by the look of it they made it possible to get more curl on the ball.
Maybe you could tell me/us a bit more specifically about the physics of the freekicks? Maybe a video at some point? :)
For example, Striking a finesse freekick with Ronaldinho with maximum inside curl so that we can gauge how it looks.
Also, choosing a nobody in the arena (if possible) and striking a freekick with them to see if the curl is big only for the star freekickers.
To be honest, I felt that the curl in FIFA08 was a bit on the "light" side. I've seen Ronaldinho do some pretty rad freekicks in real life, as far as curl goes, something I felt wasn't reflected in 08.
So do explain further if possible, I'm curious. :)

Any ideas if we are able to choose a different player for arena pre/match?
I don't think you can. It's Ronaldinho by default. I believe it changes to a different random player from your favorite team. I picked Chelsea. Had Carvalho first, AS Cole later.
I'm loving the fact you can customize controller buttons. Good on EA. It is also great to be able to muck around with camera height and zoom as well as with the game speed.
Find it extremely hard with no assists, yet very realistic.
So far, my only concern is that bloody slowdown.

how do i access the us psn store?
Follow the directions below:
1. First create a new user for your PS3.
2. Sign Up for the Playstation Network.
3. Select Hong Kong as your Country/Region. (You can select ANY region as long as you can provide a real address.)
4. Make sure your language is set to English.
5. Select Master Account.
6. Create an e-mail account for your new PSN ID. If you have another e-mail address you can use just use it.. a friends, a parents, or a girlfriends etc. Otherwise visit any of the free e-mail websites below:
* Gmail - http://www.google.com/mail/help/promo1.html
* lycos - http://mail.lycos.com/lycos/Index.lycos
* mail.com - http://www.mail.com
* hotmail - http://www.hotmail.msn.com
* AOL - http://free.aol.com/thenewaol/email.adp
Once you've created an account simply use the e-mail address in your registration.
7. Create an online ID.
8. Enter a name, it's up to you how to play this one.
9. Next you'll need to provide a valid address for the region. Lets say you pick Hong Kong as my new homeland. Visit Frommers HERE and click on any of the restaurants names. Once you do this you'll have a valid address for your new account so enter it!
That's it, congratulations you've now successfully created a foreign region PSN account for your PS3! Enjoy the spoils!
It's basically the same principle for every account that you create. You just have to change the region, email address, (language for Japanese account) and the address itself.
My example for a US account is almost the same as in the quote but step 3 would be different it would be something like this:-
Region - USA
Address - 1226 Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, California, 90210 (zip code).
If people get stuck on addresses just look up some company names as suggested http://www.yellowpages.com. I wonder if Microsoft's address has been taken up for a US account?

I really like the game so will concentrate on putting across a few [predominantly minor] negative points:
- in the arena, the sound the goalkeeper's gloves make when saving a shot is horrible (it's like someone has pulled a plunger off the floor)
- in the custom team tactics, when scrolling down near the bottom, the sound effect is too loud. This is obviously not something major to worry about, especially in a demo, but something that bothered me nonetheless.
- the penalties are still (as with 90% of footy games) crap. I still long for the ISS64 penalty system. Even Football Kingdom had an original, pretty effective system. In FIFA 09, the variation in where you can put the ball is minimal.
- free kick swerve. EA must've called 'twos' on Konami's joint whilst programming this part of the game.
- I still despise EA's number and lettering. I hate the way the names stretch across the back, and I hate the miniscule numbers. GRRR!
- the Chelsea kit in particular is hurrendous. People jumped on ThomasGOAL (being such an avid PES fan) but one glimpse of the real shirt would let you know just how bad it is: the emblem should be lower than the adidas logo and, in turn, the sponsor should be placed lower than the badge.
- Bosingwa hasn't got his freakishly grotesque monobrow :(
+ everything else (so far)

Been playing 360 demo for most of day but got PS3 version as that what played Fifa 08 and Euro on also prefer controller but that aside.
One thing i noticed is arena to right of player there seems to be blockyness when players moves its very feint but not noticeable on 360 version not sure if some bug with graphics. In game fine though but it just appears in arena very strange as havnt noticed this on 360 arena.

If only mate.
They are both at 1080i through an HDMI cable.

Ok, played about 4-5 games on the 360, so far, I have to say it's a big improvement over 08. Shots are better weighted and have more loft to them. At times you can get a wicked curve on the ball. Also, did anyone notice that you can now effectively shoot the ball to the far post, opposite to the movement of the goalkeeper when you are sprinting in to the 16 yard box...simply amazing, even the animations look really good.
Collisions are pretty good, sometimes I can't predict who will win headers in center field. I was controlling Dichio and he went up with another player, only for the both of them to miss the ball completely!
Can't comment on the PS3 demo, but the 360 has no framerate issues that I could notice, this could only be a demo thing and not be an issue in the final build.
I'm a little unhappy that regular passes, for ex. in the backfield, don't have much or any curve to them.

So I can't get the demo because my gold account is under 18 and thus can't download unrated games. Fifa 09 is currently unrated. Does anyone know when it's available for Silver accounts?
Just create a new xbox live account on the 360 (using a hotmail account where you put your age 18 or over), then it should give you a month of GOLD for free
this way you can download FIFA 09 demo

Ok, just a few comments.
Honestly, it's the first time I enjoyed playing FIFA in a long while, especially because I can use the Dpad, and as such I won't feel like I'm running like a headless chicken, I have much more precise control.
Thanks EA.
Still, the demo looks severely unpolished, especially in what concerns transitions between cut-scenes.
Some things that annoyed me:
- The penalty shootout feels like a 5-a-side penalty shootout: both the keeper movements as well as the ball direction is almost always the same...
- The keepers seem a bit flawed in a couple of aspects. I scored a goal where the opposing keeper, instead of running to a lofted through ball - which he would likely get before me - decided to stay put and way for me to score. Also, I shot a screamer that hit the crossbar, the ball bounced in the smaller goal area, and the opposing keeper remained still, waiting for the defender to come and clear it, even though there was none of my players nearby. I hadn't seen any of this in videogames since... 1998?
- The passing feels nice. I don't like it that it "accumulates" my keypresses - for instance, if I press "X" twice, it will pass the ball twice... Maybe it takes some getting used to.
- The running animations, in all fairness, don't look that great to me... All players look like they are swimming crawl-style, when they are sprinting. Not that it bothers me, I just happened to notice it on a replay.
- The passing feels great, I know I said it earlier, but it's worth mentioning. Also, the off-the-ball movement from the CPU players in the offense is pretty nice.
[EDIT] Forgot to mention. I mis-timed a tackle from behind. The animation was beautiful, and luckily the ref didn't even give me a card. I wish I had recorded it :)
Overall, this will probably keep me busy for a while more.
Just my honest opinion in this thread, no thought-provoking intended.
Best regards, and all the best for those of you who are loving it more than I am able to.

Just played the demo since I playtested it in early Augest and bloody hell! They've improved it so much since then! The responsiveness of the game when I first tried it was similar to Euro but now its pretty much perfect (If anything maybe its to responsive)
It seems easier to pull of tricks but what I liked was when I couldnt pull the same tricks I could with Ronaldinho as i could with Lampard for example who would more just do fancy turns etc which gave each player a more authentic feel.
The shooting was great when I played it initially and to be fair its got even better, great job by EA, the only slight gripe I have with it that when you press shoot its a bit to sensitive.
The Passing felt good but not much different to what I thought before, The Collisions in this game are extremely good on the eye and also give the game a total new feel. Me being poor at slide tackling i found myself chasing shadows most of the time due to me preffering the standing tackle which has now been improved a lot since 08.
I think the default speed has been increased slightly from what I played before I thought it felt a tad fast so I'll give "Slow" a try out tommorow but will probably stick to "Normal" as this can be caused by the small time given to us so we without thinking rush our play.
The best thing to come out of this Demo for me so far is the AI, Bloody hell!, ok its not perfect, its not even great but I'll go as far as say its "Good" which for a football game is huge step forward since all the others ive played have been script after script. I hope I feel this way once I have the full game. In in all as I said when i playtested initially is the best football available. :))

Actually, a couple of games more, I'm getting that "one more match" feeling I never got from FIFA...
Let's see.
I just noticed some sweet animations - one player jumping over a sliding tackle from a player of the same team :)
By the way, is it just me, or in the PK cutscenes, the kicker ALWAYS goes in the cutscene to the opposite side to where he's going to take the PK from?
Example: right-footed player, runs to the ball from the ball's LEFT, in the cutscene he went to the opposite direction, and when the camera switches - voila, there he is on the other side :P
Minor niggle, though, it will surely be ironed out.

Few things I noticed:
- passing has been cahnged, it is a lot better now. If you put sufficent power, no more of these crap slow passes
- you now get yellow cards a lot more after play ons, when the ball goes out of play next (bad for me, I love sliding around)

I have to admit that I'm not feeling the Demo. The ball physics just don't seem right sometimes. It feels like your kicking a beach ball sometimes. Even the sound of it sounds like a plastic ball. The response times are practically the same as Euro08, I expected a tad quicker response times. Players just seem floaty and the ball on their feet doesn't feel heavy when dribbling, running or shooting. There is still some negative fifaish things from the past that haunt this game. There is just some things that this game does right and others that still leave much to be desired of. Long balls still seem floaty on shots and I still don't feel that players have their own weights in terms of attributes as they do in PES. I have to agree with Gomito on this one. Also, the numbers on players jerseys(especially when you are in PK mode)are so small you practically need microscopes to see them. Rediculous in my oponion..Some of the animations look like slow motion and sluggish, especially goalies. Not very impressed at all.
It's a decent game, and I appreciate EA for listening to the community, especially in fixing the nets..however nice net animations just won't be enough for me to buy the game this time. There is still much more to fix in this game. Hope no one gets offended but this is my view.

FIFA's transitioning from main screen to cut scene and vice-versa has always been shocking. I really don't know why this is. Pro Evo calculates the position of every player for both situations (and has done so since the beginning) so don't understand why this is such a problem for EA.
I also don't like the cut scene with the referees checking the nets. Why add this if the nets don't actually move? They fiddle around with the nets as if they're window panes.

Ok... I'm off for the night.
Having had a surprisingly good time with the demo - more than I would've had expected from the videos - there's still a couple of things that trouble me.
Does the AI know how to handle balls near the sidelines? Because every time there's a loose ball near the sidelines, they just go there and when trying to control it, always go over the sideline... Is it just me? I mean, I don't mind getting free throw-ins, but hey... I'm not expecting this to happen when I chose the setting "I play football games for a living" :|
Asides from it - and the fact that every time I do a sliding tackle a bit away form a player - trying to intercept a pass - the CPU always does a 270º loop dribble (turns right, turns right, turns right) and passes the ball...
Well, I'll have to sleep over it.
Best regards,

This demo is brilliant. Physics in this game are a full generation over PES, as are the animations and control depth.
Anyone can criticize the game, because it has (and we will discover more in thime) its own flaws.
Comparing pes to this is like comparing a pig to a rose. Really, anyone defending PES physics in front of this is simply inmature fanboyism. Shooting is better than ever, passing is excellent, and you can play it full manual. After some time thinking about, the only thing PES could do better is the editing, but gameplay wise there's an abysm right now between the two.
I feel sad for the fanboys who still find pes 2008 better than fifa 09. I can't understand it but given that there's someone like Bush ruling a country in the world, anything is possibe.

Initial impressions for me are, am really liking the demo but wish i could play someone rather than the AI- biggest problem so far seems to be that again no matter what the level of the team you're playing, if ur on the highest difficulty the worst teams are still as tough as the others! tried playing toronto FC with Real and have gotten beaten a couple of times... could be getting used to the game but i wasnt losing when i was playing chelsea, AC etc. But I'll be playing online so it doesnt matter. I find it astounding as well that that bogus review I read said that its similar to Euro, it's so different from Euro its crazy. Anyone who could say that has never played the games. I think there's a simple explaination behind that (well its my theory anyway)...the players in FIFA's cutscenes don't seem contextual because the game predetermines who gets to appear in them so as to avoid having weird collision detection when they're say, group hugging in a celebration. In PES its common to see a player's hand not making any contact at all when he's giving a pat on the back to a teammate or when he's pulling someone up on his feet...and that's because each player have different stature, height, limb length, etc and it wouldn't be resourceful to motion-capture one animation with different people...

So the demo is great, nice gameplay and completely different to Fifa 08 which is a very good thing.. The heading animations are superb, scored a cracker against R Madrid with Marseille only to be ruled out for offside..
The only things im abit concerned with are:
- World Class doesnt seem to much of a challenge.. Played 3 games mixing it up with the good and bad teams and won two 1-0 and the other went to penalties.. I hope Legendary really steps it up..
- The curve you can now put on FK's is just ridiculous.. I thought it was alright on 08, maybe make it a little bit better but now they have gone way to far.. It seriously needs to be toned down..
- Chelsea kits looks like turd but hopefully this should be ironed out..
Other than that, looking forward to picking this bad boy up..
PS- Does anyone know how to shield the ball on the PS3?

Can anyone give me a few hints on how to do various tricks? I've seen the YouTube juggling video but the chances of me pulling that stuff off mid-match are pretty slim, so what kinda stuff can you do while running?
I'll be honest, I'm not much of a football fan, I don't even support a team. I buy about one football game every 5 years and that's fine for me, any more often than that and they just seem too similar to the previous game in the series. Despite all that, the game itself can be pretty fun, but considering I know nothing about the technical side of the game, I find importance in other aspects like tricks, pitch/stadium variety, weather etc and I'm pleased to say that so far I'm impressed. FIFA 08 didn't win me over and neither did PES 2008 but this year... I think it's a buy.
I don't see why the guys on the official forum are so annoyed at the speed, obviously I'm no pro but it seemed fine to me, though perhaps it's because I'd just come from playing the NHL 09 demo. They were also moaning the graphics were too cartoon-like, wtf? I thought the yellow Chelsea kit was too bright so I knocked the contrast down one notch in the options screen and now it's beautiful. I suppose being the official site they just wanted perfection, so they're always gonna find something to moan about. I remember playing FIFA 95 on the Mega Drive and thinking it was the best thing ever, and then again with World Cup 98 on the N64... I can't help but wonder if those same people were as anal about such minute details back then too.

to be honest i cant see any difference in speed from slow-normal -fast.
They all seem really fast!!! none of the speed settings feel like 08, which is a shame as i thought the 08 speed was perfect.
Even on the slow speed, the players seem to be able to sprint really unnaturally fast!!
Also it doesnt look as crisp and realistic (graphically) whilest playing. Character models are really good, but it just doesnt look as crisp and realisitic in gameplay as 08.
Great game though, and the improvements on player movements is a big enough winner for me

when u use the drible button(the one of tricks) this is problem is cut down..
but without this, everything feels heavy, specially if u are used to play PES...
im not saying which one is right, becasue for me those are 2 diferent games, and i like both.. but i can definatly understand what thomas is saying, and i agree with him
BTW i was using the FAST speed.
I think we have the same problem.
Btw, how do I change game speed?

o dear. ps3 impressions. can anybody confirm this?
to be honest i cant see any difference in speed from slow-normal -fast.
Great game though, and the improvements on player movements is a big enough winner for me
No, I've found quite the opposite. The speed settings have a very noticeable effect... especially from fast to slow and vice-versa. Fast speed is similar to PES style up-and-down with lots of long through balls and sprinting, while Slow speed is more akin to FIFA 08 (and normal like EURO 08) which is what I prefer.
I found the speed change to be drastic.
Also, for those still looking how to change the speed it is on the 2nd page (press right trigger) of the game settings menu on the last menu screen before you begin a game. (So after you have selected your teams... in the same menu where you can first fiddle faddle with the tactics). It is also on the very bottom of the page and you have to scroll down to see it. (also, it is not available in the initial screen menu or the in-game screen menu.)
I think the trick for most people is noticing there is a second page of game settings AND that you have to scroll to the bottom of that page for the setting.

It feels like your kicking a beach ball sometimes. Even the sound of it sounds like a plastic ball.Players just seem floaty and the ball on their feet doesn't feel heavy when dribbling, running or shooting.Long balls still seem floaty on shots and I still don't feel that players have their own weights in terms of attributes as they do in PES.
Played about 4-5 games now and I have to agree with the above points. The players don't feel heavy at all, nor does the ball. It feels like I'm controlling feathers, everything just floats around and it's almost like skating.
Where 08 was sluggish, it felt like the players were heavy because of this, I think 09 has gone too far towards the opposite and now it just feels a tad too light.
Other than that, I have to say I'm REALLY impressed :DD The shot power feels much better overall, the AI is much better, graphics look tidier, and it just plays better than Euro did (even with the floatiness). Goalies are FAR improved too, I don't think I've seen a GK punch the ball away before the 09 demo, that was pretty neat.
I'm still trying to get used to which button is slide and which is press, so I've commited a few fouls by accident and got straight reds
Have to say I've also been really impressed with misplaced passes! The CPU is hitting long balls and they're not going DIRECT to their player anymore :DD Same with goalkicks, seen many times where neither player wins the ball. Great job :DD
I've tried the normal speed and slow speed too, for some reason they seemed the same. Maybe what Jonney posted is right about the PS3 version?

i actually like the broadcast camera with the angle all the way down, with a little bit of zoom in.
this game is definitely better than FIFA08, and i had been playing FIFA08 regularly up to this day!
i might keep playing it, only because this 09 demo is too short!

Quite like it so far - but the ball is far too floaty - if you shoot (by accident) from the half way line, the ball just keeps on rising past the end of the pitch! Thats a let down...
Other than that, it feels pretty good.
Oh and dags, I know what you mean about slides, but did you know you can change the controller config for attacking and defending independantly? So I mapped the exact same controls I use for PES and its much better...

This demo is brilliant. Physics in this game are a full generation over PES, as are the animations and control depth.
Anyone can criticize the game, because it has (and we will discover more in thime) its own flaws.
Played a few games in the early morning and was also really impressed. As someone else said, this is what PES should have been by now.
Physics - when I first played it, it still has that FIFA "not quite 100% right", but once I'd played a match or two, it felt absolutely fine. I can see why that first impression will affect some people's views, and my view is that it's still not 100%, but you quickly get used to it and it is certainly hugely superior to PES, which seems to be getting less realistic.
Manual passing seems better to use that FIFA08. 2 problems with manual passing I've noticed already:
1) the pass-guage, even if you just tap it as soft as you can, the ball often scritps at normal speed to the nearest team-mate...especially if playing around the back-4, I just couldn't get it to under hit a pass.
2) your team-mates still have this occassional "blindness" to manual passes towards them. I've already had 3 separate occassions where I broke into the box at an angle, teased the keeper out towards me and them played the perfect ball across in front of an open goal to my team-mate, but the ball just goes right past/through him, which brings me to another unfixed problem...played swtiching (incidentally, I've also scored plenty of goals in the above situation, so it's not a problem all the time).
They said they'd improved player-switiching but for me, it is exactly the same hit and miss stuff as in 08. I play on full manual and sometimes, I have to click through 3 or 4 players before I get control of the guy you want (yes, I'm using the analogue stick as well and it is no better).
I also already see cpu cheats so I don't see me playing against cpu very often, although be-a-pro career mode might have me playing.
Defending is thankfully back in the game. I find I win many defensive headers (even from corners!!) and I can actually get in close and jostle/tackle cpu players. This is a critical improvement over Euro08.
AI team plays some nice stuff. I see variety in styles, I see them makes mistakes, mis-judge bounces of ball, misplace passes, overhit passes, get caught out of position, show signs of defensive uncertainty, etc. I've yet to see them mis-kick a single clearance from around their own box...every kick , even if they are facing their own goal, is perfect, instantaneous 180 spin and clean kick right up the park. Still, best AI I've seen.
Tactical options are now superb. The extra options for assigning custom tactics to the d-pad is exactly what was required. Great stuff! I tries setting it to long-ball and I'm sure it resulted in guys clustering around my big striker, looking for flick-ons. Will try this out more today. Can't wait to try out the full set of sliders in the full version.
Shooting now feels nice and firm, much improved over the loopy, floaty shots of 08. The nets move beautifully and scoring is a joy. However, still sometimes get that annoying thing where if you break into the box, the game scripts is that you cannot break the animations and shoot, which allows the keeper to dive out and claim the ball. It happens endlessly in 08 5v5, and it;s still there. Too bad.
Skills now lovely to perform in-game. They certainly don't always come off but it looks so slick when they do. Took Ronaldinho on an amazing run past about 5 before the final defender got in a last gasp slide.
Still a lack of individual feel for most players. OK, some are distinctive (eg Drogba clearly more powerful and good in air), but most jsut seem like generic players. I hope they work on this for FIFA10. All AI players seem to have identical abilities.
At least the player faces now look slightly more human, less like they're made of clay by a bad artist.
The game does so many things right. Manual cameras, great replay options, great tactics, great gameplay, so many options, teams, fantastic on-line modes.
Real progress has been made. Best footy game to date. Let's hope they keep it up for FIFA2010.

Well I'll add my thoughts as a lifelong PES player...
I have been playing PES for about 9 years now, and even though I tried Fifa a few times over that period, it never felt 'right'.
I stuck with PES with it's crappy online and non existent licenses purely because the gameplay was just spot on. Now this year before the two games came out I thought I would give Fifa another go, and glad I did.
I bought Fifa 08 a month ago and have to say it is a vast improvement over my other ones I have played before. It did still feel heavy compared to PES and a bit sluggish, but on the whole is pretty good, especially online which compared to PES is brilliant.
Now after playing the 09 demo, I think FIFA have got it right in terms of gameplay. Graphics are crisp and look realistic, the ball physics feel very real, response of the players is just right and I really feel like I am watching a prem game whilst playing, which for me is what I am looking for.
It has taken all the best bits of both PES and FIFA into one game and balanced it out nicely - I'm definately converted and will be pre ordering today.
As for PES, I will wait until after release (which is a first for me)
and see what peoples opinions are...cause I will bet anyone a million quid that even though the gameplay will be great, the online will be absolute laggy crap, which in this day and age is unforgivable.

- Aliasing on 1080 natif game (first time i see that)
- gameplay to heavy, no sharp (80% why i don't like this game)
- ball physic is joke on freekick, make curve like with wind at 150m/h
- no respect for shirt, number and names on the back
Good balanced feedback Thomas.
I agree with the ball physics thing for regular freekicks, when you take power ones (with L2/LT) it seems fine, but regular (ie pressing shoot + a movement only) are way off, I already mentioned it's like a cheap plastic football, hopefully that'll be tweaked.
gameplay to heavy, no sharp I don't understand what you're trying to say there so cannot agree nor disagree?
As for numbers/names whilst I agree it would be nice that every single shirt had the 100% authentic name/numbers I personally don't consider it remotely important, as long as they have a number and a name I'm happy with that, if that's one of the best things to complain about we're all in for a very special game :)

Ok guys I've been playing the demo last night and giving it a fairly harsh examination. I have to say, I'm impressed. Incredibly frustrating that it's only two minute halves though.
Having not played any FIFA's for years I was very skeptical that they would finally have the blend right but it seems they've got it locked down. The games flow fantastically and look like real life, the graphics, ui, presentation and atmosphere are naturally, second to none.
What has impressed me most is how quickly I have been able to become naturalised to the game style and (slow) speed, as well as semi-assisted controls. I have not tried full manual as of yet.
Everything you would expect from a next-gen game is there and I have to say judging on this evidence, PES doesn't have a hope in hell of ever re-gaining "the crown".
Going to play some more today but I hardly have any complaints. I am loving the challenge of it and the difficulty of mastering even the basics such as tackling and shooting.
I'm having real troubles with long shots as they seem to go over too much. Also it's physically impossible to go round the keeper as they seem super human and can take the ball every time.

Forgive the post in both PES and FIFA forums I have altered this slightly for the FIFA forum and could not be bothered to retype it all, too lazy...
Konami are the masters of shooting themselves in the foot, I still maintain they need a new HOD and team. Just over 36 months ago they were market leaders by some way with a product that on paper should have been far inferior, no licences and no real league structure not to mention budgets. But then they almost stopped all development and even started removing elements while still trying to make umpteen differing variations and incarnations.
Until finally culminating in an almost unplayable, ill conceived and poorly presented debacle that was 2008. SB then came out saying it was forced on them to release by Konami. I hold my hands up to being a massive PES over FIFA any day fan until 2008 and I still maintain if I could have solved the PS3 epilepsy inducing, eye bleeding judder, I would still be. Because of that me and my mate decided to give FIFA a month of intensive play to see if we could ever convert, being a hater of the ML meant instant joy at being able to have the full league structure and of course all the eye candy helped.
And so a year on and we are still playing 08 and looking forward to both 09 and 2009. I'm not counting either title out until I have at least a few hours play with each full title under my belt, anyone who thinks they can judge either final product from the tiny demo's we are given is either being naive or just plain puerile...
Though I have a feeling unless 2009 delivers in a big way I will find it hard to go back to the joke that is the ML...

Just had something really cool happen.
Toronto v Chelsea, I was Chelsea .
Toronto started the game as a 4-4-2, after a scruffy battle they took the lead in the 69th minute. They then made a sub and brought Dichio off for a defender. They then switched their formation from 4-4-2 to 5-4-1 and sat back deeper and deeper to protect their lead.
Now maybe im just being thick but, Ive never seen the CPU AI change their formation and system so blatently before. I've seen teams become a little more direct etc in FIFA 08 but this was just brilliant and really gives the single player mode more balance.
I'm a huge manager mode player and this year could be just brilliant, if the AI reacts to situations on the pitch.
Marvelous.

I hope the 360 spin is correct in your memory! Because feints and flick over head could be accomplished without the trick stick. I'm sceptic about it though. I just don't understand how they can leave this out. It's ok for online players but against AI it removes a big part of football to me. I mean it doesn't matter how crappy teams are, pretty much every match in real life has some step overs or rolling ball under foot and so on.

Haven't manged to play much yet, but my two biggest gripes seem much improved:
1. Shooting goes where you try to put it, and keepers can't save every shot from certain angles (though this hasn't been tested yet in manager mode obviously, where things tend to get worse)
2. Teams are different. I started playing against Chelsea and barely saw the ball, got completely overrun. Switched to playing against Toronto and I owned them (without scoring much, but still). Switched back to Chelsea and once again I was soundly beaten.
I know people are complaining players don't feel all that different, but certainly teams are stronger and weaker. I've not played enough to tell massive differences in the players, other than big slow defender versus quick skillful attacker.

You can add some lovely dip and swerve from corners now. They've definitely enhanced this from 08.
Some truly spectacular passages of play now possible with the excellent deflection physics, nice bouncy ball which feels more free than last year, and the improved response times help immensely. The game is more physical....something it had always previously lacked. Some terrific midfield scraps and defensive melees.
The last gasp out-stretched legs are great, the headers hugely improved. Getting loads of little headed flick-ons in midfield...long-ball game can actually be made to work :).
I actually managed, for the first time since I converted to FIFA, dummy the keeper and take it past him and slot it home...in good ole PES style.
The basic gameplay is deep. So much is now possible. Dribbling, possession, one-touch football, long-ball, midfield battles, ariel battles, wing-play, defensive play...it's all there, and all with freedom rather than a system which relies on a scripted ball.
I'm also starting to notice more individuality in some players. You definitely know when you're controlling Kaka or Ronaldinho. They have far more skill and agility. They even look like them from a distance, which is gratifying. And yes, Toronto are easy to own compared with some other teams....seems the weaker team AI logic has been corrected after all.
It has it's flaws but it's great to see what they've done and will hopefully continue to do for years to come.
I just hope the on-line play retains this feeling. I have this nagging feeling that the first 10v10 game that I start up, the ref will blow his whistle to kick off and PAUSE!!...and we all have to wait 30 seconds. Please let them have fixed all the on-line irritations.

And the thing I like now is that the keeper is not perfect dealing with corners, in Fifa08 if you put your corner anywhere near the keeper, even if there's loads of pace on it he'll catch it perfectly with his magic hands, now he's a bit more like Paul Robinson when dealing with corners ;)

I scored a first time rocket with Ballack from 35 yards yesterday, I was playing 2 player versus myself so it doesn't count but it looked incredible :)

That's a good point, stretching to get a tackle or header in is brilliant. I keep forgetting to do it though, I've gotten used to accepting I can't get to the ball and then realise I can do a last-ditch attempt :DD
I also like how the ball is much more free and does now feel like an individual component as opposed to some magnetic pinball which it's felt like at times.
Really is much improved :TU:

I saw the best ever save on a computer game last night
A cross came in and Drogba rose from 8 yards and hit a bullet header. The keeper did this awesome reaction save that looked so real to tip it over the bar
Oh yeah the heading looks brilliant now as well and the jostling before hand
I like the sound of this...I mean when have you ever seen a keeper tip the ball over the bar in PES? Exactly...never.

Are the in game physics improved, such as being able to actually dribble and run past players now? It was highly frustrating in the other FIFA series games.
Yes, with the best players, you can waltz through challenges. You can also use the tricks more effectively now.
However, don't worry...not all players are suddenly dribble-kings with endless tricks, only the better ones.
Dribbling is now definitely now a viable part of the game.

Skill moves are not as effective imo at all.
I usually try and waltz past players with just the analog now before I used to be a lane change whore

This game is amazing!
So long we've wanted to have the great gameplay like previous PES (PS2) games and the liscenses, music, atmosphere from the Fifa games.
And now ladies and gentlemen... our dreams have come true!

Yeh they should have made it one half of five minutes imo. The flow gets broken up far too often meaning you can't get the feeling of a proper match. Also, the cut scene on substitutions is annoying, and why the AI is making three substitutions in the space of sixty seconds I have no idea, they should have just cut AI subs from a demo with such short halves.
My feeling at the moment is that at times I have complete control and the game does exactly what I want yet at other times it's completely random, but I suspect that is because I am more or less a complete noob at this.
Are there any guides/tips topics on here? It would be nice to know the differences between Pro/FIFA controls wise because I notice if you press finesse during the power bar it doesn't work you have to do it before you shoot which is a bit annoying. Also player switching is taking a bit of getting used to.
This is easily the best football game ever made though. My jaw dropped when I saw Drogba run offside and check his run to try and stay onside only to get caught marginally off. Just that effort makes it a MILLION times better, compared to Pro when you will have a player just aimlessly wandering around in no mans land for no reason whatsoever.

I've just watched that Skills tutorial video clip - bloody hell!!
Trying to do that stuff in-game would be difficult, but the fact that the features are there gives the game even more depth and fun. Amazing vid. Loved the mid air flip-flap and the goal at the end.

one of my favorite things is the position haggling you can do for headers when a ball is in the air. you can move your player up against an opponent and shove him off the spot a little bit. i always hated how in (all) games past the ball would go up and both you and opponents would be ushered to a specific position....

People with the slowdowns on PS3 need to listen up. If you have the US demo delete it and download the european one. You'd think they are the same but they're not (hence the language option...).
No more stutters and even more crisper gameplay.

I love the fact how many ways you can control the ball. You can slow it down holding the pace control, meaning your player is able to manouver more free and quickly in tight spaces. Then you can use the sprint button when not moving to shield the ball and roll it over your foot. Then from in there you can do skills to feint or roll it another way. Then you can use the movement on its own with no buttons pressed. Then you can also use the run button to move, you'll be less agile but run at faster speeds. Then you can also knock the ball on with the right analogue stick.
All these ways mean there is so many different ways to play which makes it amazing to combine between things. Especially with the ability to let the ball run on, or through your legs.
I think I will actually be able to start a manager mode too because the CPU AI isnt as invicible as it was in 08!
Bring it on.
EDIT: Also, I just forgot to mention the "streching for ball" thing. In euro 08 I thought they did it FAR too often. They seem to have nailed it brilliantly in this. You cant stretch for EVERY possible ball, just the ones were you have a realistic chance of getting it.
This goes for when the ball is going out of play as well, things like this can turn a bad ball into attack in an instant...

Yeah i forgot to mention this
It happened to me yesterday as well while i was playing a mate and we were very very surprised by it
Im seeing loads of this like this from little flick passes to a diving header back to the keeper so he can pick it up
I really cant believe a football game actually does what you would want to do in real life. I mean how many times have you seen a defender diving head the ball back to the keeper in a computer game when that's what you would do in real life or stretch/slide to keep the ball in? I saw him kick a bouncing ball over his head to try and keep in it as well and i have also seen them attempt it and miss the ball
They just seem very clever and do the right stuff most of the time. Even if my header ect didn't make it at least he had the idea to do it in the first place
It really is an awesome game

Yup, at times it's sublime but whilst I wouldn't say there are times it's completely random, there are times when you can feel you don't have full control (cpu cheats, in my book).
Have you tried watching a cpu v cpu match yet. It's very interesting to watch the sheer variety in each teams attempts to play football. It's not at all one dimensional, they try loads of different things.

Broadcast cam on futherst out zoom and lowest height creates that camera swing thing from PES (where you could set angle from 1 to 9). Takes a little while to get used to actually playing with that cam (if you're playing on full manual passing, shooting), but it looks sweet.
CPU team did something nice. They got a corner and had left a guy loitering on the corner of the 18 yard box. I thought "the cpu never passes to this guy" so started to move my defender away from him towards the central area of the box. But they immediately took a quick corner to him, he dinked in a sweet little chipped cross which they got a header to, but my leeper tipped it round the post. It felt like I was playing agsinst a human.

My impressions after two hours playing the demo. First of all the game is much better as fifa 08.
Pro:
+ custom control
+ ball physics much better. Only freekicks looks very strange.
+ Dribbling and shoting much better
+ you can feel the difference between the players (balance,speed,..)
Contra:
- If you play on normal speed setting the game ist tooooo fast. On low setting it feels more realistic..but for me a little bit to fast. I hope i can choose the gameplay speed online.
- The shoting bar is to fast.
- the shoting is to easy and to accucary. Yes i can choose manual shoting settings, but where is the advantage? It is only more difficult...
- the passing to easy and to accucary.
The game feels like football kingdom. :SS

You can play unranked games and lock the game to manual settings only.
If you only play for the love of the game, which a lot of us do, this is a great feature.

One of my favourite things about the AI is that they try lots of things and make a lot of mistakes.
Also, if you set the game level to beginner, the AI become pretty hopeless. Their defensive gaffs make me laugh.
