It just asks you at the beginning if you play football games very often, if you answer no/sometimes/always you get a different skill level.

how do you do them? they look great!

The first one you have to be running and press forward twice on the Right Stick.

The second, you're running one way and press and hold shoot, immediately followed by holding LT, pressing A and pulling the Left stick in the opposing direction all at the same time...

Thomasgol, those pictures are fantastic. Pending my own demo of Fifa, I won't be buying PES2009 this year, because deep down I know the engine is the same, even it looks nicer and has my team licensed. And I want something different to play for my £35.

I just want to make sure Fifa feels right, want some decent through balls, weighty shooting and a nice flow to the play.

It's for the whole game. They've said before that time constraints prevent them from doing home, away, goalkeeper home and goalkeeper away kits for the huge amount of teams in the game. To be fair to them it is a lot, there's twice the amount of teams than there are in PES (possibly three times as many).

From what I've seen you have to be in a certain position and not go over a certain point on the power-bar. I've seen it but I don't think I was pressing any special button combination.

I see the crowd noises are still shit for goals. Especially on the penalty shoot outs. They randomly cheer loudly just after you've taken a shot before the ball even goes in. This was before I scored a goal in a match so I was thinking "oh they must have made the goal cheers louder in a match then"... nope. Scored with Drogba and it was the usual rubbish delayed quiet cheering.

Remember years ago when FIFA had the better graphics, we PES fans would say "who cares if the graphics are better, it's the gameplay that counts"?

We get given responsive gameplay and all the tweaks we wanted to see, resulting in the most realistic football game yet, and suddenly there's a big deal being made of the sponsor on the front of one team's kit... Come on guys. The PES2008/2009 players can patch their kits but they can't patch the gameplay.

But anyway, I've been playing the demo of this all day and it's absolutely fantastic. The best simulation of football to date. I can see why some wouldn't like it because some games are midfield battles where it doesn't feel like you're moving, as if you're stuck in traffic. But that's football, it happens all the time. In-fact whenever it's a big game, everyone's worst fear is that it will be a 0-0 draw, and it usually is.

The only complaint I could make so far is that I think the default speed is a bit too fast - thankfully EA have given us a choice, but still, ranked matches will take some getting used to if you use "slow" offline. That's the only complaint I can make; the response times make it so much better.

I've scored some fantastic goals that before you wouldn't see - I just thought "I'm hitting it, running out of options", and it's gone in. The goalkeepers are a lot more realistic.

on the FIFA 08 demo i had hard time beating the semi pro AI, took me ages to get my first goal but now........on world class i can score 2 or 3 easily :( hope this is fixed by release

I'd like to report a serious bug in the Fifa 09 demo :

When you start the match, the tactics are perfect. The player take the exact position from the formation and the individual positions. Ronaldinho for example plays a little bit left from the deep striker of Milan. The 3 players behind striker-Ronaldinho-Kaka play as central midfielders, which is right too.

But when you start the second half the positions change to one of the standard formations. Milan suddenly clearly play with a 5-man-midfield with Kaka and Ronaldinho as central midfielders.

Please fix this for the full version. As well as in the first half, in the second half the players should still keep their custom position.

You can't be playing on world class then because it's frigging impossible as far as I'm concerned, the AI plays a very, very good game of football. You select "experienced" from the list at the start of the demo to put it on the hardest demo difficulty - PRO I think it is. But that still leaves at least one harder difficulty to use in the full game.

demo is quick without being arcadey, tactics are deep, "Effort" animations really enhance suspension of disbelief in play, actual gameplay has been clearly refined from FIFA 08, while not being a revolution of difference (but that's okay/fine/appropriate!), and the crowd reaction - the part of the game most of us actually know BEST - makes sense, again impacting the immersion...a solid, SOLID combo of gameplay growth and overall experience-immersion thoughtfulness...the FIFA team is truly beginning to look like a team that not only loves football, but can distill its essence down into a gaming experience e.g. PES3-5...great work with the demo, hope that the game is as good if not better!

After having played a few matches I have to say that this game is simply brilliant. Imo Fifa 09 is by far the most realistic footy game ever made. The physics system adds so much to the game and the A.I. is much better than last year's game. They actually play realistically instead of unrealistic, untouchable super football.

I'm finding it tough, too. I'm struggling to score in most games, and the most I've scored in any game is one goal. It's challenging, and as such, I'm happy with the AI from what I've seen so far.

Coolest thing just happened. Not seen this before.

Got to a shoot out, first pen hit the bar, came down a clear foot or two over the line, backspun out and clear.

It was a finesse placed penalty.

Love the camera zoom, that was always one of my pet hates, that on the far side of the field, unless you were playing on a 32"+ screen, you couldn't see what was happening with the dynamic camera view. Great to see the ref and linesmen out there too, adds more realism. Can't wait to see the weather effects and what they bring to the game.

Overall I'm glad they've improved the jostling for headers to actually make it fair against the CPU now.

I don't see what PES can possibly offer to make be bother playing it at all this year. (Add to that the fact that it doesn't come out here until almost May of 2009 which makes it a waste of time anyway!)

It's a very welcome addition. The on-the-fly tactics with the d-pad seems quite effective in this game. You certainly notice the difference when you select high pressure, or possession.

As Placebo said, the average age of the poster is lower over there, and I get the feeling they all want a traditional FIFA; i.e. an arcade game, easy to play, with scores of 5-5. Goals from 40 yards out, three times a match. That kind of thing. Judging from the people I've seen criticise the game so far this certainly seems to be the case; they give it three goes and complain that they haven't won a game yet. It's not the kind of game you can just pick up and be amazing at. You don't become Ronaldinho the first time you touch a football either.

I hope that EA don't take any notice of the morons who want that kind of gameplay back, Konami are catering for that audience now. If FIFA goes the same way then those of us who want something deeper will have nothing left.

In fact, I think it was only when I saw it in Euro08 that I went back and tried it in FIFA08, and there it was.

I'm sure there are thousands who still don't know it's in FIFA08. It wasn't exactly well documented, somewhat typically of EA.

When you move in direction its not fluid, not enough animation to get from a to b. And defending is the usual hit and miss, you just dont feel in control.

I was planning on buying both this and PES, but for me even if Konami knock out PES5 but in HD it will be the better game. Dont trust Konami any more so I will be trying that demo first as well.

You know...I've just switched from playing several matches in Normal speed, to Slow, and I'm loving the game even more now...seeing that the response is still top-notch at this setting, it makes me wish EA could just treat Slow as the game's default speed and have that momentum and pace ingrained into everybody's playing style...they should learn that normal is just plain unrealistic.

I actually want midfield battles. If the game makes it feel rewarding to just play football, I wouldn't mind it one bit. The risk is that players are left feeling as frustrated as one might feel when watching a game where neither of the teams create anything. But, if the game is deep and rewarding enough, simply passing, defending and all that would keep you occupied enough to not think about it.

The FIFA09 PC Demo is nicer than 08 and all, but I always find myself just constantly trying to find a clear spot for a long shot. The passing and build-up play is tedious and not detailed or deep, animations are blah and there's just nothing to interest me save for that opportunity to unleash a long shot.

I'm sure online ranked matches will be normal speed but online unranked matches will leave the speed option up to the host - that's how it works with half-lengths so I would assume that's how it will work here. I would bet on it.

Exactly how I feel as well. The sense of reward when you win a really really tight game is immense, just immense. I can't really comment on the PC version because I think the console version is on a different planet in comparison - it's FIFA on PS3/360 or nothing, for me.

Oh man! Just unbelievable. I'll tell you what I'm most impressed with... The goals.

I just managed to sneak past a Real Madrid defender with Drogba, leaving a 30 yard sprint to goal (they were pushing up to try and get a winner in the dying minutes). I was coming in from a slight angle, but the defenders were catching up, so I just hit a shot as hard as I could. It went like a bullet.

It was one of those moments where your eyes see something your brain doesn't quite comprehend; in FIFA 08, every shot from an angle was saved by the goalkeeper, there was only a certain area you could shoot from and score a goal. But here, the ball was hit so hard, the keeper (even though he positioned himself as well as he could on the far post) couldn't get over to it in time. The net bulged, and I literally leapt off the chair and screamed into the wall. It reminded me of scoring in the Master League against Manchester United on six-star difficulty - i.e. almost impossible. The feeling is just out of this world, it's such a rewarding game to play. I'm in love with this game.

What they have done, with the goalkeepers especially, is amazing. They're 500% more realistic now. And what pleases me the most... The thing that turned me off FIFA 08 completely in the end, the thing that made me sell it... Hasn't happened to me so far.

Every goal has been a good, realistic goal. No glitches, no horrendous goalkeeper mistakes. And every goal has been different.

To be honest, it is much too fast for my tastes. Seems not just unrealistic, but exaggeratedly so. Players are performing certain moves, particularly certain turns or certain directional changes, much faster than really possible. Hoping it was on "fast"... :)

I just managed to sneak past a Real Madrid defender with Drogba, leaving a 30 yard sprint to goal (they were pushing up to try and get a winner in the dying minutes). I was coming in from a slight angle, but the defenders were catching up, so I just hit a shot as hard as I could. It went like a bullet.

It was one of those moments where your eyes see something your brain doesn't quite comprehend; in FIFA 08, every shot from an angle was saved by the goalkeeper, there was only a certain area you could shoot from and score a goal. But here, the ball was hit so hard, the keeper (even though he positioned himself as well as he could on the far post) couldn't get over to it in time. The net bulged, and I literally leapt off the chair and screamed into the wall. It reminded me of scoring in the Master League against Manchester United on six-star difficulty - i.e. almost impossible. The feeling is just out of this world, it's such a rewarding game to play. I'm in love with this game.

What they have done, with the goalkeepers especially, is amazing. They're 500% more realistic now. And what pleases me the most... The thing that turned me off FIFA 08 completely in the end, the thing that made me sell it... Hasn't happened to me so far.

Every goal has been a good, realistic goal. No glitches, no horrendous goalkeeper mistakes. And every goal has been different.

To be honest, it is much too fast for my tastes. Seems not just unrealistic, but exaggeratedly so. Players are performing certain moves, particularly certain turns or certain directional changes, much faster than really possible. Hoping it was on "fast"... :)
It would have been on normal - there's no reason for him to have put it on fast.

I do much prefer the game on slow, I have to say. It's only a fractional difference, but that's all it needs.

ok played 4 more games, not impressed. The player individuality just plain sucks. The players apperances look different but they all play the exact same. The ball physics dont seem as good as 08. Don't take this the wrong way Gomito, this is a genuine question; I agree with you when it comes to lower-league teams (buying a player for Tranmere in manager mode was a waste of time in FIFA 08 because they were all the same player at that level, literally), but what are you basing your "the individuality factor is worse" comment on? What is it that makes you feel that way, do you have any examples (apart from the Toronto thing, which to me, just means that you perform best with their style of play)?

When I pass the ball to Drogba he can skip past players, but he will go down easily if he's tackled. If I have the ball with him and then pass to another midfielder, i.e. Lampard, you can feel the speed difference and the "clumsiness" difference straight away. I was going to say before that I could feel the difference between players a lot better in this demo!

If you pause the game you can go to the options and see the whole controller configuration. What you use to "jockey" depends on the configuration you choose, but on "classic", I think it's LT/L2. I prefer it on LB/L1 so I swap the buttons around.

When running there will be natural pushing movements done automatically, but when you press the jostle button you will automatically slow down to barge/push people out of the way. If you want to run and jostle at the same time you're best to sprint up to the final point of your run and then press the jostle button.

Demo is great (just not long enough). I tried to change the control scheme to the D-Pad for movement, but it seems you cant do that in the demo. Also, I cant remember, though I thought it was mentioned, if you create a game, can you force the opponent to play on your settings, i.e. only manual, I thought it was mentioned but I cant remember now?

The demo is fun, I see some great animation, headers have many different ones, and it was good. I like the runs the computer makes, trapping is better, but still not perfect, I could understand if playing as lower division team, but as world class players on chelsea, they should trap the ball great 99% of the time.

PK's - Keepers cant move from their lines anymore before the shot, thought you can move slightly left and right, which is a much needed improvment. Also, they actually listen when you press for them to come out and get the ball! yay!

Shooting - much improved, you can actually feel like you are striking the ball hard, which looks like a good hard shot.

Also, this is the first time I feel like the players are not on rails, which is great.

1 - Peter Moore has been tinkering behind the scenes at EA holding the PS3 versions down.

Or 2 the less insane version - the gigantic Rockband upload they're adding to the PSN for the EU launch has cocked something up. Although that's another EA game...

I like the demo. The gameplay is good but there are a few negatives for me. Major one is the ball physics. It travels like a floater at times. When you shoot and you think there's a lot of power behind it, it travels slowly with the keeper taking it so casually. With throw-ins too it takes an age to get it to your player. Player faces aren't as good as PES. In no way. Close up of players, Fifa just doesn't look good. Take a look at Ambrosini when he's leading the Milan team out. They are just of weird shape along with the shape of players in general. I am enjoying the demo. Compared to the last PES, it is way better. See what PES has to offer this year. I might end up getting both.

Less than 1 game a year. Sorry. But I have them both and that doesn't matter to me. It just seems like sony can't get things right. Delayed game releases, delayed patch releases, delayed demo releases. That's a problem they really need to correct.

Yes you can, in the beggining of the demo you have a choice between Classic, Alternate and Create your own or something like that. Just customise it and change around the Analogue and D-pad functions...

Less than 1 game a year. Sorry. But I have them both and that doesn't matter to me. It just seems like sony can't get things right. Delayed game releases, delayed patch releases, delayed demo releases. That's a problem they really need to correct.

Yes, I'd recommend semi on everything (bar the ones you can only have on manual or assisted, I prefer to have those on assisted). This lets you direct your passes and shots a lot more widely, and it leads to less interceptions as well. Just takes a bit of getting used to.

Becanes (and others asking about tactics), remember you can press left/right on the D-pad to change your defence/attack priority, you can press up on the D-pad to bring up a list of temporary instructions (offside trap, pressurise etc.) and down on the D-pad to bring up a list of permanent tactical changes (default, counter-attack, possession etc.)...

Yes. You couldn't in FIFA 08 but you can in FIFA 09. Been mentioned a few times in here, I'm sure it's confirmed.

Stu, restart the demo and choose the middle option from the list of "football game experience", then you'll get the next difficulty down.

I don't mean that to sound incredibly condescending but it is frustrating. I've only managed to score one goal in a game so far but I have managed to beat the CPU a few times.

Surely if you play on fully manual with the D-pad you'll only be able to hit perfectly straight passes (seeing as the D-pad only has eight directions)? Never really thought about it before! But yeah, I've started clearing balls now instead of passing it out of defence. They can pick the ball up and score otherwise, even on semi. A lot more realistic.

Thanks for the advice mate, one of many things but I'm really liking the way a player like Pirlo for example (to be honest I haven't tried the other teams yet) if positioned correctly can boss midfield effortlessly like in real life, have strung a few brilliant attacks together with him having a hand in all of them haven't got used to the shooting or dead ball situations yet, I'm off to mess with the sliders. Yes you can, TT played the demo with the D-pad today.

It's easy to miss but it's the bottom two options on the controller configuration screen.

Don't take this the wrong way Gomito, this is a genuine question; I agree with you when it comes to lower-league teams (buying a player for Tranmere in manager mode was a waste of time in FIFA 08 because they were all the same player at that level, literally), but what are you basing your "the individuality factor is worse" comment on? What is it that makes you feel that way, do you have any examples (apart from the Toronto thing, which to me, just means that you perform best with their style of play)?

When I pass the ball to Drogba he can skip past players, but he will go down easily if he's tackled. If I have the ball with him and then pass to another midfielder, i.e. Lampard, you can feel the speed difference and the "clumsiness" difference straight away. I was going to say before that I could feel the difference between players a lot better in this demo!
i cant tell those things your saying at the end of your paragraph. I can only see a difference in size. And what i mean by worse, is that ronaldhino and kaka dont feel quicker or faster then anyone else on the pitch, and there is no momentum. WE had this, when you got past one player you seemend to build up momentum, and you see this is real footy..

They knew the demo was due for release today so I think they've been ready for a while. I can't see there being a problem with the demo itself, we've been talking about it for a long old time.

There have been a few demos delayed on Xbox Live because of a Microsoft certification cock-up, which was the fault of Microsoft. I think something similar has happened at Sony today, either that or a server has gone down. They have released a statement that would seem to suggest it's a fault on their end, haven't they?

first post but ive been following this thread for the past two weeks or so. im a former pes die hard but was in between after really giving fifa 08 some time.
been playing the demo some today and i think its an improvement no doubt. i dont mean to be negative but if i had to point out one thing that still gets me down its the crispness of the ball handling. its the only element i miss from pes.
to be honest i feel like the fifa series has duplicated and then improved upon the pes formula over the past 3 years. but its still missing that crispness. i cant really explain it better than that. theres still something a little bubbly about the gameplay that im not fond of.
having said this i still think fifa 09 will be the better game this year and this may be the first year i dont buy both games....
