PSP currently available here in Nokami land, land of Geisha and sushi. On sale at around 20000yen (two hundred dollars or so I guess or 100 pound). Has anyone got one? If so, what are your impressions of it? Advantages and/or disadvantages? I've heard one possible prob is battery life, another is an easily scratchable screen. Probably more advantages than disadvantages though. How does it compare to the DS?

I haven't got mine yet :( but I'm getting it for Christmas :D . My first game will be Metal Gear Acid.

You'll be lucky I think. They'll only have 500,000 in shops by the new year, that's compared to the 2.5 million Nintendo DS already sold. It's another Sony launch shortage buying madness fest.

It'll be good to see if they get some of the bugs ironed out for the Euro launch (sticky buttons, dodgy analogue stick, UMDs coming out).

Main problem is battery life I heard, only up to 3 hours max on any game which is remotely good-looking graphically.

It does look nice, but apart from travelling long journies I have never seen the point in portable game machines.

From what I've seen in the shops here there's only around 10 games or so at the mo'. Out of those I think I'll get the MG Acid and probably Minna no Golf (cute J-golf game)....that is until the WE game comes out......

ClassicDude. Would you rate this portable console game thingy up there with the Sega GameGear. which in my personal opinion was and still is the greatest portable console game machine known to man kind. How people thought a gameboy was better is beyond me.

Also Classic the point you make about battery life. 3 hours is a damn long time to be playing video games. I think 3 hours is more than adequate and that playing any longer than that would be potential damaging to your eyesight. Would you agree?

But it does beg the question as to why on earth would Sony allow a consumer release of a UMD writer. The UMD, imo, won't be used in any other products so blatantly the only reason people would want a copier would be to copy games.

Of course, theres good reason that a third party might release a copier instead but because of the exclusivity and lack of demand, they'll undoubtedly charge a bomb for them.

If anything, I can only imagine some sort of adapter thingie to plug in the back of the PSP to insert miniDVD type discs.

Not played online yet, no. Will be concerned with MGA for ages I think. Weird shape discs though, don't you think. reefur? As for Nintendo DS, I gave it a miss- knowing me, I'd lose that pencil thing SO easily. Also, I found the Hikaru Utada advertising of this machine irritating as hell. DS is easy as pie to get here (more released) - but it looks like Sony wins the image game - by creating a shortage, demand shoots up. You wouldn't believe how quickly they sell out here. First, the shops don't know when they're getting new stock in. Second, due to mobile phones and word of mouth, they are usually snapped up within hours, if not minutes. I was lucky - found at the local Jusco - the 4th one of 6.

I know someone who has a PSP he has tested the battery with two games: Ridge Racers and a Japanese beat-um-up-game (forgot the name).

[03/02/05 14:54]
Plus Spider-Man 2 the movie to be included in a million Value Packs

The American arm of Sony have just confirmed that the PSP will arrive in the US on 24 March for $249.99 (about £133).

"PSP will evolve and elevate portable entertainment, giving users the freedom to play full 3D games, watch movies, listen to music and connect wirelessly on their terms, their time and their place", said Kaz Hirai, president of Sony's US computer division.

"More than ever, today's consumer demands access to entertainment outside the home without compromising quality.

"With more than 100 PSP game titles currently in development worldwide and the ability to download and listen to digital music and view feature films with breathtaking screen quality, PSP lets users control their entertainment options, all in one package." He added, before going off for a lie down in a darkened room.

Europe Late For PSP Launch
SCE will slip its Q4 release plans overseas due to shortages.
By Nix

February 4, 2005 - Riding the backside of the rollercoaster that was yesterday morning's announcement of the PSP's release and price for North America, news source Bloomberg is reporting that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has delayed the European release of the PlayStation Portable from the originally planned Q4 2004 release (which would have had the system release this March with the North American system.) Europe will now see the PSP release sometime this Spring.

Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Kenichi Fukunaga attributes the delay to shortages of the hardware -- the system was notoriously difficult to produce in the quantities SCE originally had hopes for, and its hoped-for PSP launch of three million global units will now officially fall one million short. North America will see one million at launch, Japan has received approximately 800,000 systems since its December 12, 2004 release date.

The European launch has been said to be expected later in 2005 (dating back to a mention in October from SCE at the time of the Japanese launch announcement, but it hasn't confirmed how far back the release before now. There is still no indication how deep into Spring this release will be -- at the very least, however, Europeans will not see the system this March unless they import or travel abroad.

At the moment it looks like June for us Europeans due to the high demand in the US.

I had heard that UMD movies would not be able to play on any machine other than the region its designed for but everything else is region free

There are so many rumours flying around it gets pretty confusing at times. I have heard the rumours on region restrictions for movies but i've also heard japanese and european psps will have the same region code (2) as opposed to the region 1 US psp.

Also, can anyone that owns one confirm for me if the psp menu is in english? as i've seen some screenshots with japanese text and i haven't really stayed up to date with psp news lately.

When you turn it on for the first time, it asks you English or Japenese. Choose English and all menu's are in English, but this is only for the PSP menu's. All ingame menu's are in whatever language they are written (IE Ridge Racers has mostly Japenese menu's, but English text when driving).

I confirm what sodafountain says. If you're going to choose Japanese games, then choose carefully - driving games, golf games are fairly easy to play but you might have trouble with Metal Gear Acid. Wait for the games when released in the States.

By the way, I heard there is a software program costing around 1500 yen (about 7 or 8 pound) where you can convert your avi files (I think) into files for your PSP. Skimming through the article in a magazine (it was in Japanese, not my first language!) it seemed to take around 30 mins for around 2 hours of programmes on a 512mb card.

Late April UK launch for Sony PSP?

Sony_psp_1 Amazon has today supplied those sceptics who think that Sony’s PSP will miss its intended UK release slot of late March with some serious ammunition. Click to buy a PSP model through the online retailer and you’ll now be told not to bother the postman until at least the 29th April.

The US launch is pencilled in for a month earlier on March 24th. Still, someone will be happy. Nintendo, which will ship its DS handheld console in the UK on March 11th, now has a clear month ahead of its rival. Games Digest

I am thinking of buying one this week. £220 value pack and ridge racer and the golf game £27 each. Should I wait and buy the US version of the games or buy the Jap games and machine now then buy us games.
I also heard that the European machines will have a samsung screen which is not as good as the jap screen made by philips as the philips one is brighter and better colour.

I am seriously thinking about ordering one this weekend but not sure if I should wait the for US console.
I know it is region free however I have read that the publishers can put a region lock on their games if they wish.
My other issue is I want ridge racers, everybodys golf and ape acadamy but as the txt will be in Jap will it cause any problems witrh me enjoying the game or are they all simple games to play and understand what everything is.

I suppose you are right but I am willing to take that risk. A few of my mates have got the PSP from Japan and not really had a problem with it. Only one of them got hit with custom, plus at £140 you can't really go wrong even if you get hit with custom charges.

I might order one today. £250 value pack though there is another place that sell them for £220 just you have to wait a few weeks as there is a waiting list.
Machine alone is £220.

I dont know if I should wait for the US launch, I just know they will be hard to get and very expensive.
Dead pixels puts me off a bit and the games I would get will be in Jap but hopefully the cars names, lap times etc will be in English as will most of the txt in Everybodys golf. I think I will wait for the US release of ape acadamy though.

Car names wont be in Jap, 'cos its a brand name (Sony is still called Sony over there etc)

Lap times are in English numbers i think, just look at some pics,

Is there any point getting it now though, surely if youre gonna import you might aswell wait a couple of weeks until the US release, it'll probably save you like £100, which you could spend on games

I orddered mine a few weeks ago from www.electricbirdland.co.uk, it cost 305 quid, including FREE delivery, it was the value pack with all the extras like memory card, and came with Ridge Racers. Little bit more than you'd pay importing yourself, but firstly you won't get hit with custoemr charges, as you are buying in the UK, and secondly, i ordered it at 2.30PM, it arrived at 9.05am THE NEXT DAY!!! So if you want one in a hurry, and can afford that little extra, you'll be playing it tomorrow.

Also, don't worry about paying the extra tenner for UK adaptor, all it is is a standard cassette tape lead, the pwer supply that comes with the PSP is auto sensing, so i'm sure you could get a lead locally.

10 February 05, 14:09
Most of the text in Minnano Golf is Japanese I'm afraid, so you'll just have to rely on common sense. Suffice to say that the menu's become fairly easy with repetition.

As for Ridge Racer, it really would be a pain to put lap times in Japanese characters.....of course they're in English!!!....Gave me a bit of a giggle though:-)

10 February 05, 22:50
Place where I have ordered mine I asked to check for dead pixels and he went through 60 machines all of which had dead pixels and markings on the screen
I was told the best he found was 1 dead pixel and a very small mark looks like a hair under the screen and as I really wanted one for weekend I decided to take it.
I thought was good of him to be honest.

No thanks, I'll keep my £200 aside for the £350 that they'll no doubt want for the next-gen consoles. When you take away how 'cool' and 'nice' it looks/is to have one of these, it's never worth it in a million years. It can be as 'nice' as it wants the simple fact is unless it's heavily supported by quality games it's a waste of cash.

I didnt think I'd be interested in one either, that was until I played Ridge Racers, it was truly amazing seeing such a game moving on a handheld. I still think they appeal to mainly people who have the ability to play games while travelling to work, i.e. on a train or a bus. I cant justify buying one, cause frankly I hardly get enough time to play games on my big consoles never mind on a portable one!!!

The "Value Pack" has this lot in it:

What's in the box
# PSP Hardware (PSP-1000K Value Pack)
# PSP Memory Stick Duo 32MB
# PSP Headphones With Remote Control
# PSP Soft Case & Hand Strap
# PSP AC Adapter (100V - 240V, 50/60Hz, works worldwide)
# PSP Battery Pack
# Free Travel Plug (to fit in your country)

Hence the slight price difference

I have a PSP. I payed £230 for the Value Pack and RR from www.audiocubes.com

Its a great machine, I have no dead pixels but I DO have a slightly laggy square button. So far its no issue at all but it may be a little down the track. It works every time it just needs to be pressed hard.

I'd recommend waiting for the US machine now purely for the cost. You can get a PSP Wipeout and RR for £185 inc. delivery. Now THATS good.

Sony has confirmed our report that the PlayStation Portable is "at least a few months away" from release in Europe, with French chief Georges Fornay admitting the system's launch had been postponed for several months to satisfy demand elsewhere.

The platform holder has previously admitted reconsidering its European launch estimate - originally March - but only confirmed to internal teams last week that the system would definitely not launch this month.

At the same meeting internal development teams were told it was "at least a few months away", despite a number of European launch games having already been finished. Finished titles will not be given more development time.

UK retail sources last week said they expected it would be "June at the earliest" before European gamers got their hands on PSP.

It's bad timing for Sony. The original story broke on Friday as its chief competitor, the Nintendo DS, launched in Europe with 16 titles following successful US and Japanese launches last year, while this week's confirmation happens to coincide with news that the DS has sold close to 90,000 units in its first few days on sale in the UK.

The PlayStation Portable is already available in Japan, with a US launch scheduled for 24th March with a price tag of $249.99. We'll bring you as much as we can on both platforms in the coming months.

It seems once again we are getting fucked over. I am glad I already have one

RR > NFSU:R

RR is incredible, has huge depth to it and truly will last for a long time. its much nicer to lok at that NFS and has a better framerate.

I also have Lumines and that too has great replay value and so far, 1 month since I got it, I am still playing both games all the time.

IGN State that Japanese games have been tested and work fine with US machines and vice versa. Yes, it is up to developers but every game so far has been tested and none are region locked. I cant imagine too many dev's will chose to region lock. Why would they??

OPM,

If you want to watch movies I stongly recommend the 512MB Pro Duo from Scandisk. Its approximately £40 on eBay. Most films I have converted so far come somewhere between 300 and 400MB. None have come in under 256 so Id say that was a waste of money.

Retail sources are today suggesting that PSP may not reach the UK until Christmas.

Following the news last week that PSP will not be released over here "for several months," many insiders pointed towards a summer launch for the Sony handheld.

Indeed, a July release was apparently bandied about by Sony at one point but this, it seems, will clash with PSP's launch in South Korea. And, as Sony never releases hardware in more than one territory at a time, in order to avoid hardware shortages, it seems a post-July outing for the machine is assured.

At this point, a firm release date for the machine is nothing more than speculative. But, given that July is apparently out of the question, retailers we spoke to were under the impression that Sony would further delay the UK launch until Christmas in order to cash in on what is by far the most lucrative period for new hardware and software.

At present, Sony is remaining tight-lipped on the subject but as soon as we get official word from the company on PSP's UK release we'll let you know.

Meanwhile, the uncertainty about when Europe will finally see PSP has resulted in a thriving grey market for imported machines. Shops on London's Tottenham Court Road are currently selling imported PSPs for around £300 - three times the Japanese price of 19,800 yen (£99).

MBA Technologies, who receive their PSPs from Asian wholesalers, told Reuters: "We sell plenty of these - usually 10 or 20 a weekend."

Admittedly its only speculation at the mo but its still worrying for those who cant wait for a UK release

Hey man...

Took me about 50 minutes to convert a 700MB movie (The Cube). It came out at about 330MB. Then it was a further 3 mins using USB 2.0 to actually get it on the memory card.

This is pretty much the same timescale as most films I have converted using 3GP converter. If you have the files on your PC and arent ripping, expect about an hour to get it on the PSP and convert it..

Depends on how desperate you are, dsgg.
If you want one soon, buy the US one but if you wait for a UK release, it'll be much cheaper. I'd wait cuz Nintendo are gonna unveil their next handheld at E3 this year, not the DS, a new one after that called GBA2. God knows what that will be like. Its rumoured to be a pocketsize Gamecube.

P-Dogg, you have a 512mb card, so I guess due to system files etc that works out around 460/470mb limit. So is it only possible to get one movie on there? Just wondering how much stuff people have got on. Preferably would like to get a couple on but at Sony prices, maybe I'll give it up!

Sorry to not get back to you quicker.

Yeah comes in about 470 after using the system files. I can in theory split up 2 movies for this but I lose quality in both. I find it better to have a film and say an episode of whatever you like on there. It leaves space for saves, the odd tune etc and you retain the film quality.

Its all about personal preference though. The uality isnt too bad with 2 films on there, maybe the sound is out of sync ever so slightly but its workable.

My THUG2 Remix and Wipeout both turned up today but my PSP is sat here with no charge and I dont have a charger with me.

Utterly lame :(

crayon
30 March 05, 05:35
Thanks for the reply PD! So I guess you get around 2 and a half hours decent quality? I would get a 1gb card if it didn't cost as much as a psp - looks like the 512mb will have to do if Sony has anything to do with it. :( ;)

P-dogg
30 March 05, 09:12
No worries mate.

512 should be fine.

Wipeout and Thug2 remix are incredible although I am leaning towards THUG2 due to the depth and the framerate in Wipeout is noticeably low. Doesnt really affect it but when you get a rocket up the ass, you will notice it. THUG2 is huge, literally massive and looks the nuts.

Well having given Wipeout more time, I must say my opinion from yesterday has changed somewhat.

Its stunning. The framerate isnt hugely noticeable when the speed picks up which is very odd indeed. As soon as you open the faster classes and tracks it becomes incredibly good. Best Wipeout ever? Not sure yet but for a first gen game on PSP, it is fully sick.

Tony's as I said is unbelieveable. The ammount they have put in the game is crazy. Park editor, graphic editor, trick editor, 14 levels and then you can even map your face onto a character by simply uploading a JPG of yourself to the PSP. Add this to the huge array of licences music, classic and story mode and you really do have a console game, in terms of looks and content in the palm of your hand.

Quite simply put, this machine is the nuts.

Im going to be honest with you guys. I got the PSP round 2 months ago now, and I dont even play the game i got with it. I got Ridge Racers which i find very repetitive. I hardly use my psp now, there are just no games that i find appealing. The only use i have of it, when i dont have time to watch the new tv shows i download, i convert them to mp4 format to watch them during my frees at school, which is pretty hard to do anyway with everyone going "oooh, what is that? can i play?". Hahha anyway my point is i wouldnt reccoment buying it until you are sure that you are going to enjoy the game you buy with it, I just bought Ridge Racer due to the fact that everone else had it and we could play multiplayer games. However, it gets boring. BTW i spent 2100 Hong Kong Dollars and got 1 game and screen protector for free.

Yep!

I want one but am aprehensive because at the end of the day the games a ps2 ports!

No originality AGAIN and this is Sonys ploy and we are falling for it!

Look at the games how many are on PS2 already?

Only WE will appeal 2 me, i will probably stick with me DS as i got the Kirby platformer 2nite n this game is 2 good!

With more ORIGINAL games coming out later in the year (exception Mario) i will be more than happy with Animal crossing, Mario Kart abd Advance Wars!

BUY A DS!

Sony have done this since the first PS I agree. The thing is though, there ain't many original ideas left for any system. Mario Kart original? I would have bought a DS except I already have a GBASP and would probably lose that bloody pencil thing in 5 seconds flat! The PSP though does look a lot cooler.
