View Full Version : CM5 and FM2005.
Im confused, what are the differences between these two, or are they the same? And when will they be out? The most appealing thing to me about one of them is that i read somewhere that you can play manager mind games. Now that sounds like fun.
FM2005 is by SI interactive and is the proper 'Championship Manager' game I believe. Eidos have the rights to the name 'Championship Manager' but I don't think they got the actual game engine.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, my money's on FM2005 being the decent one.

You're totally correct.

I think they both look decent. FM05 is going further down the CM4 route of almost bewildering tactical complexity, whereas CM5 seems to be returning to the more accessible style of CM01/02, which for me was probably the best in the series so far.

Am I the only one who thinks this looks like nothing more than a CM4 add-on, ala 03/04?
I remember playing CM 96/97 on my Amiga, with the big 'DOMARK' logo and some generic old fart in a tracksuit as the intro screen. The foreign teams' players never had names, they were called 'No 11', etc. Your players would always refuse to sign a new contract and bugger off to Italy in the summer, happy days.
Then I finally got my first PC (486), and got CM2. Fucking hell, I enjoyed that so much. CM3 arrived years later and at first I found it hard, but with the new 01/02 pack it really cemented it's place as the No.1 game, although it never filled me with the same feeling CM2 did on arrival.
CM4 = pos. I lost my interest in it because of the amount of time you'd spend waiting for it to finish 'Processing', even when you mucked about with the database/league sizes. Not to mention, it must be a contender for buggiest game ever, and 03/04 is nothing but another patch. And it's still slow as shit.

This is the killer and why Eidos have lost the plot and the true Champ Man fans.

God Classic, you brought back a few memories of the very first CM Game for me there ! .... That big Gold Domark logo and the Manager that looked a bit "Big Ron-Esque" if memory serves, those Images are engrained for life now .... Happy Days indeed ;)
Seemed like back then everyone at your School had an Amiga in their House and they were all playing CM (and later SWOS).
Spending most of our School Days conversing passionately to different classmates about such varied and interesting topics as "Hidden Gem" young players .... Keith Gillespie being one of mine, believe it or not
And when not pissing your Education away, whilst you discussed the in's & out's of how to possibly lure "The Divine Ponytail" to your Wonderful club .... you were probably waxing lyrical to a very small but interested party about the Finer Moments of your All Conquering, Bedroom staged European Cup run from the Night Before !
For Me......Thats what made it so special back then the sense of a little community with You, your mates, Brother, Uncles and Dads all Discussing, playing and watching this NEW game building and growing each year until at some point it turned into the all conquering Financial Beast of a Series that we see Today.
Those were the Days ........... Somehow in Ten Years time I don't think I will be looking back with the same fondness on FM2005 ...... Shame That, but thats "Getting Older" for you ..... I guess
ClassicD
19 August 04, 20:21
Yeah, everyone and their dog played Champ when I was at school. I don't think getting older should have anything to do with it, I still play plenty of games it's just that the series isn't as good as it was back then.
SilverSpider
20 August 04, 00:38
I haven't played the recent series that Much to be Honest so I can't really say how it compares to the Earlier ones -
But having read Reviews on the Net and talked to mates there was mention of the Flaws you mentioned above - I'm Hoping to get back into the Manageent Game this Time around - and will probably give both CM5 & FM2005 games a runout like most of you Guys.
The "Getting Older" aspect is more a Personal thing for me, A sad realisation that I will probably never have the Time available to me that I used to have back then - when I could dedicate myself to a few lengthy stints on the Game without a worry. :D
I guess Memories of Old Games & a Time of carefree youth will always have me putting on my Rose Tinted Glasses from time to time ;)

FM2005 is developed by Sports Interactive and uses the same codebase as the previous Championship Manager series.
Eidos and BGS took the name and look of the Championship Manager series but then had to write the game from scratch. The result is the continuation of the CM series just in name.

Football Manager 2005 is the new football management game from Sports Interactive and is set for release in Q4 2004. Here is a list of confirmed new features (check out the screenshots at the bottom of the page!)
Updated user interface
Football Manager’s user interface will look markedly different to anything that has come before. Navigation between screens will be easier, with each screen explaining what information is on offer and how to get to other, related information. Consistency between separate game elements will also be more noticeable than in previous football management games: operations such as player filtering and sorting will now work consistently throughout the game. The game’s look – which now includes a two-panel option – will also be easily customised, allowing managers to store their preferred views and to return quickly to them.
Refined game engine
Sports Interactive’s long-standing and award-winning game engine has been refined and tuned in accordance with the feedback received from fans of its previous games. For example, the new game incorporate more than 30 extra fields for player data, including the all-new new ‘preferred moves’.
Updated database and competition rules
As has always been the case with Sports Interactive’s management simulations, Football Manager 2005’s database and competition simulation will be as up-to-date and accurate as is humanly possible.
Pre- and post-match information
Managers will be presented with enhanced information before and after each match, to show team line-ups, injuries and tactics before the match, and lots of stats about the match afterwards.
International player news
For the first time, managers will receive information on international performances, allowing them follow their players’ careers and ascertain how they are performing at the highest level.
Cup summary news
Events which unfold in each round of all of the major cup competitions will be delivered to the manager in a news summary.
2D clips from agents
Managers are likely to receive ‘video clips’ (executed using the game’s acclaimed 2D match engine) of a player’s performances, sent to them by that player’s agent with view to a possible transfer.
Coach reports on squads
In addition to commenting on individual players, coaches will now offer their opinions on the squad as a whole, thus helping managers to decide which areas of their team need improvement.
Job centre for non-playing positions
Non-playing jobs will be advertised through an in-game ‘Job Centre’, improving the manager’s ability to hire coaches and other staff.
Mutual Contract termination
Managers will be able to offer surplus players an opportunity to agree mutual contract termination, which will reduce the cost of releasing players and trimming squads.
Enhanced player loan options
Managers can now approach other clubs to offer young players on loan, a process which will make it easier to give younger players competitive experience. Also, when players’ loan periods expire, the manager will have an opportunity to extend the loan (where appropriate).
Manager ‘mind games’
Managers can click on any other manager’s name and issue a comment to the media relating to that person. The effects of these comments will see an increase in the amount of pressure surrounding title races, relegation battles, Cup ties and so on. It will also be possible to use this feature in relation to your own players, other clubs, media pundits etc.
Football Manager 2005 – Further Features
Playable leagues in 43 countries.
More than 140 playable senior divisions and in excess of 100 playable cup competitions.

A database of more than 14,000 clubs, 3,000 of which can be managed.
Data supplied by a network of more than 2,500 researchers from around the world.
Updated 2D ‘top-down’ match engine.

Media comments are A LOT more risky now as they can effect how your team performs. My players disagreed with the first media comment I made, and I got drubbed 6-2 by Arsenal. When my players agreed with my second media comment I drubbed some team in my CL qualifier (a message came up saying Scholes especially liked the comment), and Scholes set up four goals and scored one.

Is there anyway you can skip matches? This was the worst thing about CM. Friendlies you don't care about and you can't skip then. I don't wanna cancel em because players won't get match fitness.
So annoyed they didn't add it in.

So how did it go for you guys?
I got 2nd 2 points behind Arsenal after 23 games
I signed during the winter break
Riquelme
Ronaldhino
Mista
Deco
Traded out Silvestre to get Ronaldhino
I didnt have time to try them on the pitch as the 23 games went out. Those players should give a flare to my attacks
With strikers such Rooney, Smith, Saha, Van Nistelrooooooooy. I might just have to change the goalkeeper. Doing a big clean up at Man Utd :)

25 September 04, 17:54
i finished top of the league. after my 2nd go.
man utd 47pts
arsenal 41pts
signed
daniele de rossi
sanli tuncay
fernando cavenaghi
i signed de rossi to begin with and then tuncay arrived. de rossi was unhappy because of the arrival of tuncay saying that he feels that there is too much competition for a first team place.
then tuncay wanted to leave the club because he found it hard to settle in the area. he started missing training and i had to get rid of him. he still played really well though.

CM4 was a bug ridden piece of shit and it almost put me off the series for good.
I'm glad it was almost. I've just finished playing the demo and I'd have to say I was mightily impressed. There weren't any bugs that I could see, the game palyed at a decent speed and the level of detail was great. The top down view worked well, though I've been a text-only fan in the past. It seems like a good job from SI, nice one and I think I'll go pre-order it now.
Even though it's the game CM4 should have been two years late.
You'd be a bit of a sap to go anywhere near Eidos version in the new year. SI - the travesty that was cm4 is forgiven.

It does seem like FM2005 has brought back some of that 'old' Champ feeling that was missing completely from CM4 and it's addons. I went Inter - before a Serie A ball was kicked, Mihajlovic had missed training twice, told me he was going to see out his contract and leave for nothing, accepted a mutual termination of his contract, Vieri said he doesn't like me and slapped in a transfer request.
Lovely.

I went Inter - before a Serie A ball was kicked, Mihajlovic had missed training twice, told me he was going to see out his contract and leave for nothing, accepted a mutual termination of his contract, Vieri said he doesn't like me and slapped in a transfer request.
Lovely.
It appears your reputation preceeds you mate ;)
It's officially coming out on Thursday now as well, which is nice.
Dear Sports Interactive customer.
I have some good news for you. Due to some unscrupulous retailers in Italy and Sweden who decided to start selling Football Manager 2005 early without permission, ourselves and Sega have made the decision to bring the release date of Football Manager 2005 forward to this Thursday, November 4th.
So, that means that you'll be able to buy Football Manager 2005 from this Thursday from all good, and some bad, retailers. A full list of UK and Irish retailers stocking the game can be found at http://www.sigames.com/news.php?type=view&article_id=1055
If you do not live in the UK, then the release date for the game is now thus -
4th November
Turkey
Germany
Switzerland
Benelux
Spain
Bangladesh
Hungary
Portugal
Malta
Cyprus
Israel
Italy
Singapore
Nordic
UAE
France
Iceland
Romania
Slovenia

Czech Republic
Poland
12th November
Australia

South Korea

China
To be announced

Thailand
We hope you enjoy Football Manager 2005 as much as we enjoy making it, and we apologise about any release date confusion - but at least it's being brought forward, rather than slipping!
Cheers

Mine was posted today from Play. The last game I got from them arrived the next day so I can but hope. Normally it takes a few days though...
Does anybody know how to play in windowed mode? I tried to add "-small_screen" but it doesn't do shit...

I'm getting a bit fed up with certain aspects of the game already, my team constantly has stats of like:
Shots - 20
On Target - 4
They're not even long shots, they're bloody good chances. My team also seems incapable of playing well against bigger sides.

They were, before SI games and Eidos split up. Now SI games makes FM with sega, and Eidos makes CM 5.

And as for the fullscreen/windowed thing, I got an error message when I tried adding "-windowed", but when I added "-small_screen" and then changed it to windowed mode while in the game, it worked.
But bleh, here's hoping CM 5 will be more like the old versions.

Arsenal 7-0 Bolton

IMO this is the best version so far... but sure there are sometimes irrealistic scores! I'm playing with Porto, who as by far the best team in the Portuguese superleague. Diego is a wonderkid, scores lot's of goals and almost always is man of the match...
Weird thing in the game, my forwards and midfielders make a alout more fouls than my centre backs or side backs! Maybe it has something to do with my strategy!? Example... Jorge Costa (CB) had at the end of the season around 10 fouls and 5 yellow cards! Diego had 60+ fouls and 26 yellow cards... Everygame my midfielders and forwards get a yellow... I think it's because of the instructions made somehow my players to foul to prevent the opponent from counter-attacking... I rarely get a goal a from C-A. On the other hand i score lots of goals in C-A situations. :P

Save game utlitity? What do you mean?
Anyways, I'm Palace and I got 3rd in my first season (4-5-1 custom-made tactic).
I find that (unlike previous games) you have to actually adjust and tweak tactics game-by-game (even moreso when you're supposively weaker teams like Palace). Even with teams like Chelsea you can't win by just putting up a 4-4-2 formation and selecting your team!

Yea bro,but its fixed in the game, certain managers have a certain liking for one another, others dont.I'm playing as United's manager and I've always had Wenger and Mourinho throwing stick at me like, how my team is not strong enough, how I wont win it this year and so on.The you got people like O'Leary,Bruce and McLaren praising you on what you have done at your club.If you had kind words thrown at you, ofcourse, you say nice things back about them...then,those managers will be your friends.I recently beat AC Milan in a CL semifinal and Ancelotti praised me for the result and we became best friends.http://www.evo-web.co.uk/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

The game has rubbish multiplayer mode. To play against friends you need to pay 4 pounds a month.... rubbish idea. Youre not allowed to add another user either to your offline games, making it worse when playing with friends.
Gameplay isnt as great as they made it to be, im still sticking to FM 2005 with patch 5.0.5.. which is class.
The interface of CM5 is also rubbish imo.
I quite like it
Although there is some things missing which i like
such as Offer players to clubs and Enqire about players
but i like the fast skip thing which plays matches in about 20 seconds
i agree wit milanista...fm2005+mini image+5.0.5 seems alot better than cm..although cm has some nice touches to it....looks liek ill stick to fm2005 as well...
to patch fm2005:

install with your real .exe in the game folder not the cracked one(ive noticed this isnt always needed but to be safe..and the cracked one is illegal anyways!.)

yeah it's totaly fucked up
can't believe coventry have a budget of £25m, even liverpool only have £11m
the match engine is terrible, i've seen players chasing a ball then just stop dead for a few seconds allowing an opposing player to catch up and intercept the ball, just seems so dumb, i've seen balls go out on one side of the pitch and the throw in given on the opposite side instead, same for corners
the only things i like about it are the game speed and the freedom in the tactics to place players wherever you want and instruct them to make runs anywhere on the pitch, this wasn't enough to stop me unistalling the game though
just glad i downloaded and tested it first without wasting any cash on it

I cant find a formation for these players

I havent installed 5.0.5, ive got 5.0.3 which is class. What exactly is the difference ?? They were released in the same week.
i have 5.0.5 and it works fine
1 thing i do like about the patch is that its really hard to find a tactic to suit ur team so alot of tinkering is needed
Anyone got CM5 yet? Any good?
wannkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
dont touch it with a barge pole

Just got FM2005
When applying the patches do you have to put them on in order like 5.0.1 to 5.0.2 etc

I have to agree with some of the comments made although its a magical game (fm2005) sometimes its untrue for example having 30-40 shots a game and scraping a 1-1 draw with the computer team having 1 shot on target but overall its pure class already won the Greek league with Olympiakos (Romario is legendary for 1 season then he retires!) the press were like Romario past his best? so i praised him ended up my top assist player and 2nd top scorer considering i got him half way through the season that was some achievement. But im top of the Czech League with Sparta Prague also ive just started a game with Santos and will be Man Utd next. someone earlier mentioned scouts sending videoclips of players can someone expand on that for me because thats new to me, can this be done? if so how, id like to know.
Yea same Diego, the shooting on the game is utter bollocks, thats the only reason I never played the game for long, was because of the shooting.
Doesnt matter who I went, I started a season with Celtic, Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man UTD, and every team struggled to score, they have about 20 shots on goal, and like 5 on target, while the CPU run down the pitch, take ONE shot and score, utter nonsence.
Or the GK kickouts, 80% of them go back to the CPU, and the cards?..I was getting like 1 red every game, the AI is terrible, not even worthy of a game.

How bad is it?

Disgraceful. Data is awful, players have completely wrong positional data (Nistelrooy has played in defence for Man U more than once). 10-0 scorelines aren't uncommon. Coventry have a budget of £10 million. Tranmere (in debt in real life) have a similar budget. I wanted it to be a real alternative in FM and I always thought it would be - I didn't expect it to be bad, let alone how bad it is.
Edit: The "big announcement" has been postponed to Monday due to legal and licensing reasons. It's confirmed to be FM related, predicted to be FM2006 news - so it's sounding good... Here's hoping it's a Winning Eleven\FM combination :D
I just played the gold demo of FM2005, which I suppose is based on one of the recent patches.
The game is friggin' amazing! The number of players and clubs in this game is unbelievable, it seems like you can find at least 6 teams from any league in the world.
I was surprised to find Batistuta in the game since I didn't expect al-Arabi to in it, I bought him as Man Utd. Awesome!

It's strange the amount of people who overlook it - my brother-in-law played nothing but Pro Evo and I tried to get him into (what was at the time) CM (now FM). He thought it looked okay but wasn't really struck. Next night he wanted another go after he'd been thinking of a few things he could do with the squad... Next night he wanted to see if he could loan a star defender... And years later he now plays FM more than PES.
(And his 11-year-old son - although he plays 4-4-2 every game as he "can't be bothered")
By the way, the gold demo (as far as I know, but I'm pretty sure) is unpatched. When you get the full game and patch it to 5.0.5 there's loads more neat features (such as "Interactive Chairmen" - if you get hired by someone like Chelsea and you don't buy any big names, the chairman suggests a few, and if you don't like them he buys them for you).
I can't wait for FM2006 and this announcement on Monday - it's hard to see how they can top this (but then I thought that when upgrading from CM to FM I suppose).
lol its weird all these people didn't know about SIgames and FM manager. Am I only one who got into FM formerly CM first then into PES/WE games ?? ;) lol.
I personally don't play FM because one day it just hit me and i just couldn't sit there look at dots move around anymore but before that for 4 years this game made me lose friends and gfs lol. It is the most addictive shit ever if you're into it but once it hits you and you fall out you just can't be bothered anymore :(
Anyways can anyone who has FM tell me how big these 2 files are: ??
server_db.dat and people_db.dat
because I need someone to send them to me
20 and 80 meg respectively on my version.
And most people i know got into CM WAY before they got into PES (and then WE)!!!
I know these is a strange thing to say, but i just think the game is TOO in-depth now, and doesnt have that easy flow it used to have back in the day.
lol probably right and what turns me off about it is that because it's a managing game its very much dependant on STATS/attributes so seeing wrong stats/bad research here and there just shits all over my feeling to play where as in PES/WE at least you're controlling them.. so even if stats aren't dead right you can do something as you're in control but other game cuz you're watching.... stats determine everything and if they're not even close it pisses you off.
Anyways i'm gonna need someone to send me those 2 files only, if anybody is kind enough to wanna help PLF out. tell me here... we'll add you on MSN and get this shit going.
take care
I want them too, maybe an updated set so it makes converting the PES4 stats easier.
Anyone know where you can download updated databases with the most recent transfers?
if you download patch 5.0.3 or 5.0.5 they include full transfers.
I downloaded an update but EditPRO4 always says No CM4 data found :(
What do I do?..I copied the player_db and server_db into the directory, and get that message.
It only works if I keep the old cache in, which I dont want.
"CM / FM database format is constantly modified. Adapting to each new format modification is much time-consuming, so the editor may not support latest databases."
Suppose thats why, shame :(
After playing the game for about 25 games, its the same old shit, Rooney hits it miles over the bar from their box, but they score into me from 30 yards out..
Its a load of bollocks, you play preston and have 19 shots and only 3 go on target, while none go in, just a joke.
Plus you get injury after injury after injury, plus your getting on average 3 yellow cards per game, pish game.

BAH :dwarf: Lucky i inquried here then.
LMA Manager for PS2/Xbox isnt THAT bad, its the best on consoles imo.
LMA Manager for PS2/Xbox isnt THAT bad, its the best on consoles imo.
Still crap though...I'd rather play tiddlywinks.
Yea, LMA is the best, but still crap.
I started ANOTHER season on FM with Ajax, still the same crap :(
I wonder what they even changed in the patch, it all seems the exact same to me, ah well..back to the shelf it goes.
I think FM has its moments of goodness, but sometimes there is that period where you just cant do anything to influence results.
Anyway, its better than CM5 - lol the demo came out after the official release, or is the demo not out yet?

I just went HMV and saw they had CM4 for £10, do you lot think i should buy that because all i have to do is update the game. So should i get it?

The Big suprise
fm2005 got the newest patch etc.
keeps crashing to the desktop tho. Their FM forums are a load of balls, they dont help you whatsoever, just say "scan your RAM" etc. Its pissing me off, just i was getting into it, it crashes to desktop like 3 times in an hour, causing me to play games again, which ive won, yet now i lose.
anyone any ideas how to fix it?
Try this place.

and still they talk bullshit.
just started a new one with derby was enjoying it, got through the preseason entered the season and on the second game it just went to desktop
bullshit pc games
 I know what you mean. Losing save data is one of the worst things that can happen in a video game. I started auto saving after every week game time after that happened to me.
I'm starting to get bored of manager games. Cuz once you finally win all the trophies in one season, you feel theres no possible way you can top that so whats left to play for?
I took me a couple of seasons in FM2005 to do it but once you do, it gets boring.
The only thing I havent done is manage a club and a nation but thats only cuz there arent any vacancies.
Hopefully the PSP version will get me playing again. It looked nice in that video above.
Same can be said about PES, cant it?
Still, all depends what you do, do you go Real Madrid?..or do you go one of the crap teams from division 3 and help them win the EPL?
I used Man Utd.
I could try one of the lower teams liek you said but that would take forever.
