Good god, I can almost hear ZZZZ exploding over this, but here we go anyway ;)

"Forza Motorsport(TM)" (Microsoft Game Studios). "Forza Motorsport" is the first fully customizable racing simulation for Xbox. This groundbreaking game allows gamers to drive hundreds of the hottest cars in the world from more than 60 manufacturers at breakneck speeds. For gamers eager to put their reputation on the line against the best on Xbox Live, "Forza Motorsport" takes the checkered flag.

MS's attempt at a GT4 beater, it should get interesting now ;)

This will be very interesting indeed. Especially if MS manage to get damange modelling into the game, something which GT4 lacks in a big way. Well that and decent AI :)

I just looked on IGN and they have a direct feed movie from the Pre-E3 MS Press conference. It looks like they are using the same licenses as PGR2 as they have Ferrari's in the game.

I've seen this game in motion and it's stunning..............Even though it's a blatant GT rip off.

From what I've seen FORZA combines real driving with realistic car damage and sense of speed.

Damage and speed.........Aren't real in the GT series.........why?

There's a demo of this in the next OXM magazine. I've played it, to be honest it isn't that good, but saying that i'm not a massive fan of racing sims. Others will probably love the game :)

The demo of this is excellent. Comparing this demo and the GT4 JAP demo, Forza is edging ahead in this battle. It's already got several advantages over GT4 and it's still got a few months to go. Roll on release day I say.

no man, check the enthusia page - the preview videos there look mighty excellent, a lot more realistic in the physics term than both Forza and GT4.Maybe just my opinion, but a lot of guys at racing forums agreed with me :)

Microsoft's Forza Motorsport shows off its 230-strong car list and those Ferraris

With Gran Turimso 4 charming pundits, gaining plaudits and winning podium places across the globe, Microsoft had to do something to steal the Sony game's thunder. But what?

While Polyphony's racer is ready to peak with its second PS2 incarnation, Forza Motorsport won't get underway until spring. How could they attract the world's attention? By revealing the entire list of all 230-dream machines? Hmmm. Show off yet more sumptuous screens? Nice. Whisper the word Ferrari? Ker-ching!

Just take a glance through the 230-strong list below and you will see many of the dream machines that Sony's flagship racer has always lacked. For along with those redheads bearing the famous prancing horse, there is also a plethora of Porsches from the feisty 959 to the effete but neat Boxer.

Just across the grid from that pair sits the square but muscular Pontiac GTO Hardtop, the ultra-lightweight Audi Le Mans Audi R8 and the sedate saloon of Volvo S60 R. And that is just scratching the glossy metallic surface. So go on, dive in.

If the demo was like Toca2 then this game could be good. I much prefer realistice driving games. Stops the likes of Wrighty and Holio using completely dirty tactics to try and finish in 4th instead of 5th to last.....

Holio
10 February 05, 13:24
I thought the demo was very similar to TOCA2, as in racing round Laguna Seca looked identical. The handling has yet to convince me, but hopefully you'll be able to tweak etc.

Wrighty and myself may have been involved in a little car bashing between ourselves, but vengeance was had in the end. As for using dirty tactics on other racers, I'm afraid as I use bumper cam, I cannot see who is either side of me, and I never deliberatly take anyone out, I may use them to lean on every once in a while going round a corner, but that is all, nothing to see here, move along please. ;)

If I don't lean then, how come I get races with Clean Race Kudos then? If you hit someone too hard you lose your Clean Race, if however your side to side racing and you lean your clean race stays intact! ;) Anyhow Classic in one of the races in Chicago you were turning into me, however I held steady and as we were travelling at a high speed, you got a speed wobble and spun out all on your own, not much I could do about that! ;)

ClassicD
11 February 05, 13:25
That was the incident I was talking about. We were side by side in Vipers and I was moving in towards you, but I swear there was loads of room left for you I was just trying to give myself as good a chance of taking the oncoming left-hander as possible, I don't put people into walls, maybe because you use the in-car view you didn't see the gap as well as the outside view would have shown.

Leaning my arse, you ought to have heard the vitriol in this man's voice when CW besmirched him early on in the evening.

Dar
11 February 05, 13:34
Actually Holio, hitting someone as hard as you can but without you actually hitting the wall wont lose you your Clean Race bonus. (unless maybe you plow straight into someone as they're stopped after hitting a wall already)
Thats just a nice reason/ excuse dirty bastards like to use to defend themselves against being branded a cock. :D

Ah ok, I thought you were talking about a race in Edinburgh, in that race all I saw was your front right wheel turn towards my 'bumper' as such, then the next thing you were cursing me as I saw you spin out in my rear view mirror. But I had just held a straight line I didnt intentionally try to take you out.

Leaning my arse, you ought to have heard the vitriol in this man's voice when CW besmirched him early on in the evening.

Now that was something totally different, in the previous race around Yokohama I believe, cant remember for sure though; Wrighty and me had been racing along side each other in a very tight contest, then into a right handed corner he totally T-Boned my car into the corner, leaving me spun round and all sorts and coming in near last in the race. Next race up I swore Vengenance on him for his totally deliberate henious crime. Hence why racing round KGB Corner I took him out in the same style at the only really tight corner on the track on lap 2, and thus laughed myself all the way to near the end of the race ;)

I played the demo yesterday and to be honest, I hated it. The handling I thought was terrible, and there was no sense of speed, even when bombing down a straight at 150MPH.

is this a new demo or the beta one?

ClassicD
23 April 05, 14:52
Think they mean the new one.

Well I heard a certain Mr Chris Wright got the demo and thinks it's good. IGN have a preview of the game's online side up, and the guy writing it is already saying it's going to be the best online racing sim on any system (I know he's going to be biased in favour of XBox games, but he's obviously then including PGR2 in this which IMO currently holds that crown).

Also from the latest movies they've put up it doesn't look slow to me, but someone just gave me the demo as I was typing this so I'm off to try it ;).

ClassicD
23 April 05, 15:04
:/

Not so sure about this, you guys were right about the speed. The framerate is noticeably poor at times, PGR2 does a better job of the framerate than this does IMO. The poor framerate does make it feel a bit sluggish/slow.

The handling and car models seem fine to me, but I have to say I was expecting a lot more than what they've managed to do, the framerate really hurts the sense of speed.

EDIT - I haven't played the old demo, so I can't say if this is that or a new one. Any way to find out?

spaceman
24 April 05, 19:00
Played the demo today and the thing that hits u is the poor framerate which for a racer is just not acceptable, i hope they fix this for release cos if they dont then it will suck big time..Apart from that i do think the handling seems fine to me also, maybe a little light but only hade a few races so far...

I've just had my first stint on this and it seems decent enough I ain't absolutely blown away or anything but I like what I see so far, It certainly seems to hold its own with the other Racers but I can't compare it to GT4 as I don't have it nor have I played it.

The framerate seems to run a little lower than some other racers (i.e. Rallisport 2) at times, but you guys already noticed that in the Demo which I haven't played ... so I can't say whether its been improved since that version or not.

What I can say is that it never gets low enough to spoil things from what I have seen of it so far. In fact to me the framerate feels almost exactly comparable to PGR2 which never seemed like it ran anywhere near 60fps more like 30fps ?

Anyway I firstly went into Arcade Race and took a Big 'Ol Black Bentley GT for a spin around the first track ... "Maple Valley II" a Tarmac at Dusk affair ...

First thing I noticed was a lot of Assists available to help out a Rookie.

The best one being the green "Arrows Raceline" on the track which when you are going too fast glows Red until you drop some speed upon which it returns to Green letting you know you are doing the right speed for that corner/bend, As I say a good feature to the not so "Sim" friendly newcomers ... managed a second place in the Bentley then I switched to a Yellow Porsche 911 GT3 and managed a first 2 laps later.

Other things to mention that I liked ..... The Graphics, well they may or may not be better than GT4's, you tell me ? but they are certainly more than capble of supporting this Game and what they certainly do have is a nice "Style/Look" all of their own and they've also flung in some nice lighting and shadow effects on the models and the track.

Also of note are the Damage effects on the cars, very smart and a lot more advanced than in any of the other racers this side of "McRae/Rallisport/Burns". I had some nice scrapes & cracks on my Vehicles by the end.

Lastly, for those that are into their Stats and Data you have the Telemetry options on the Replays ... Pretty Advanced ... it lets you see in Real time all the Data of your Racing/Car at that exact second in the Race ... Cool Feature for those that want it.

Well I've rambled on for long enough, probably telling you everything you already knew from playing the Demo. ;-)

Anyways hope my impressions were the sort someone was after, just told it as I saw it :)

Cheers Guys

Cheers mate, I can live with a PGR2 framerate but the old demo struggled to even match that so it's good you mentioned that game specifically. Most people seem to be saying even with all the assists off, it's far more along the lines of PGR's style of driving than Gran Turismo (i.e. not this all-conquering "simulation" they're trying to sell it as), but still a great game all the same.

I'm quite looking forward to it now.

Was the Audi TT the car u started with too cos it was the one i started with too. One small thing i noticed is that for a Four-WD car it dosn't seem to hold the corners aswell as a Four-WD car in say GT4. In fact i have found that i have more control in the a Front-WD car only with the obvious understeer. This is realy alot different to GT4 but not in a negative kind of way, at least its still too early yet for me to say which i prefer....

Hi spaceman,

Yes you are indeed right mate, I did start with the TT ... it seemed the obvious choice from the selection offered up at the start.

I think this game will be even better played with a Steering wheel as at the moment the difficult thing for me is touching the stick only lightly to turn ... I end up pushing a little hard on it then the next thing the Tyres are screeching underneath me and I am losing speed and grip, but if I get it right the car just goes around smooth without making a sound ... needs a delicate touch :)

I also need to work on my Braking as it never seems as smooth as the CPU AI, they seem to brake very late but still don't skid/lock up ... like I am at times.

I do like the feature of looking at the CPU AI drivers Telemetry as it shows how hard they are Braking/Accelerating and also how much they are turning the wheel in the corners .. helped me see were I was going wrong initially.

I would have liked some License/Training Tests & Tutorials and stuff like they have in GT, you know basically teaching you initially how the Game wants you to drive and where you are going wrong ... but so far I ain't seeen anything more than "Tips" pop up on screen at the end of a Race.

9.2/10 at Gamespot !

Thats a pretty good score from them, as they seem to be a lot harder to please these days .... with MGS3 getting 8.7 as a perfect example.

P.S.

Check out the Reader reviews for Forza at Gamespot .... some Fooking :clown: has given it .... 1.6 ???

Most likely a GT4 fanboy ... why people do this is beyond me if they didn't like it as much why not give it 7 or even a 6 ???

But 1.6 thats just Ridiculous for a Game of this calibre.

People should keep scores like that for stuff like "Chicago Enforcer"

I have only had about an hour on it so dont feel equipped enough to comment. I will suggest that everyone turns off the top driving aid as soon as they get the game or you find it very hard to race without it, its the one that gives you a racing line to follow and makes it way too easy.

The game does run smoother than the demo that was doing the rounds, its all fine as far as I am concerned

9 May 05, 22:28
I have played this game for the last week and in all honestly i would not buy this game cos the framerate just aint right, i mean there is just no sense of speed and cornering can be a real pain weather this is down to the arcady feel of the handling or the drop in frames it just dosn't feel right. At first i thought it was just the car i was driving but after trying out over 10 different cars and putting the best tires and best brakes i still find cornering a mess.It also feels strange that i find the easiest cars to corner with are the front wheel drive cars which normaly suffer from understeer and i find cornering with a four wheel car harder-strange. It may not help when i go from playing GT4 50fps to Forza's 25fps or maybe i have got a beta and not retail cos to me this is not nearly as good as GT4 or PGR2 IMO.......

ClassicD
10 May 05, 08:44
I was led to believe Forza runs at 30fps and doesn't drop frames, which would put it on the same level as PGR2. Agree that it'd have been better with GT's framerate, which I thought was 60fps, not 50 tho? :S

I'm going off the PAL/NTSC thing and with that GT4 will be 60fps on NTSC but 50fps on PAL cos they ain't no 60hz selecter...as for Forza your probs right there as most Xbox games run in PAL60....so it would be 60fps or 30fps and it deffo ain't the former....but still it just isn't as smooth as PGR2's 30fps, especialy when cornering....I think what i need to do is rent the retail to see if what i have is perhaps a beta version from where the demo came from cos that would explain alot....

None taken :).

Aye it's pretty good, initially a few concerns about the sense of speed but once I'd gotten on to faster cars it improved. Although, regarding this issue I would still say that GT4 has it licked by a mile. Graphically, I tend to focus on the framerate and that's why I have to say GT4 spanks it here.

I have only played career mode so far, and chose the Audi TT (Europe). I turned off all assists except manual gearshifting, I'm a lazy cnut so I stick with auto. Anyway, first corner then, what a nightmare! Maybe it's just my bad technique I don't know, but I had to turn ABS back on again because during braking the wheels just lock up completely and you can't turn. As soon as I stuck ABS back on it solved that problem, and it's since then been pretty controllable with the racing line, TCS and that other one turned off.

XBox Live - I only raced a few times on it in career mode, not tried the basic XBox Live option from the main menu yet. It's split into classes for career racing, what I found was when I took my B4-rated car into that area every room I entered was filled with B1-rated cars, and I consequently got gubbed. Even when I put a few bits and bobs on the motor to get it up to B1, I still got gubbed. Having said that I haven't tinkered at all with the settings, something you're definitely gonna have to do to play the career online. It was all North American folk I was playing with unsurprisingly.

The scoreboard integration is fecking great, on the circuit select screen pressing the blue button cycles through the different boards; Overall, Friends List, Car Club and Local (this last one is every time done on that event on your own XBox, regardless of car).

I had a wee bash at the vynils, with the right amount of time spent here you could make some nifty looking cars. I can see myself spending as much time in this bit as actually racing :).

Hopefully some of you get it today and can maybe play this evening, if not it'll be Friday/this weekend.

Well I've barely started, only played one "career" race, along with a starting introductory session on Laguna Seca in free run, but I have to say I like it a lot so far. It does start off feeling a little slow, but I got the feeling that it was more into doing things right, from the beginning of the game rather than blast through the easy parts and then find the latter parts to be a lot more difficult. A nice way to break you in if you will. ;)

I've started out as I intend to carry on, Racing Line, Traction control and Stability Management all OFF! Only ABS left on, and I must say, I like tha handling a lot as it is now.
I've onyl got myself a white Civic Type-R so far, and I spent 15 mins in the decal shop and put a nice black "Punisher" skull logo on the bonnet. Cant wait to get into the paint job thing a bit more, nearly looking forward to that as much as playing the actual game. :D

I had to turn TCS back on, every car felt like I was driving on ice. I've not even tried the racing line yet but you can sometimes spot people online who are using it.

Had a few races with ReActor and Kenny M last night, not bad tho these German guys came in and talked gobbledegook (or was it German? ;) ) non-stop. In the last race one of them piled round the first corner taking me and Kenny off, the twat. On the last lap I caught up with him and was all over the back of his car, I may well have nudged him and he went apeshit! He was screaming all this stuff in that funny language with my name thrown in every so often, I was shoutin back "I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE SAYING!", then I got "ASSHOLE ASSHOLE!" back at me, feckin hilarious!

For anyone who's had a problem with seeing other people's paint jobs or people not seeing their's online, in the lobby you have to wait till they download to your machine. Next to the car name is the wee box with the car class (A1, B3, etc), that will fill up with black if you're downloading someone's paint job, if you don't wait for it to finish and then 'clear', you won't see that car's custom artwork.

Classic mate, I've only really driven my Type-R properly, but I love it without traction control on, I can get the back end out if I want and glide through some corners. It also helps towards my 1500 difficulty "bonus" points at the end of every race. :D

haha true, but I have the option of throwing the back end out if I want. Sure, keeping a tight racing line is much better most of the time, but for some wide long corners (Midway II I think has that wide open hairpin type corner) its great to just feather the brakes and put the boot down, watch the car glide slightly sideways around the corner. ;)

Anyone have tips on how to get your car to compete well online? I'm currently a C3 class I think with my Civic, but surely it'll get mauled online againt other proper C class cars, I've only added a muffler and a quick gear change, maybe one or two other small things, but no turbo or anything, as that would have made it a C1 and I know I'd get spanked by them in it.
I'm yet to play online, I'm a bit afraid to due to not being confident in my car. Might unlock some better ones first.

but no turbo or anything, as that would have made it a C1 and I know I'd get spanked by them in it.
You probably realise now but it's worth mentioning that C1 is the fastest you can get a class-C car without moving it up to B. The classes aren't split into C1, C2, etc, just C, so it's your C3 that would get spanked ;).

Ok lads, I know some of you have opened up a great deal in this game, but I have only started the singleplayer game. A tip came on screen saying it's better to keep the cars you win rather than sell them, now I have two bobbins cars, the old toyota that you basically win in your first race and a dodgy nissan too, I could sell them both and get a Mitsubushi FTO which would mean I would have a chance of winning the Asia class and probably the FWD class.

So is it best to sell bobbins cars, or keep the whole lot, also can you only a win a car once?

ClassicD
18 May 05, 13:25
Well I bought an Audi TT to kick things off and it didn't seem too long before that had won me a better car, so I punted the Audi sharpish. I still have a couple of bobbins efforts myself, like the Lancia, but I got rid of some Nissan effort and many others.

In the end it would seem you're never too short on cash so you can always just go and buy a car for a lower class should you need one.

Dar
18 May 05, 13:37
I haven't sold any of the cars I've won (or the car I started with) yet. I think I have 11 or 12 cars now. No point in selling them really, its not worth it! :D

I got myself a lovely MR2 Classic, should give yours a bit of a challenge hopefully. ;)

187 eh?

Thats not bad, think my MR2 tops out at 260kmh, so converting that makes...161.5ish. Hmmm, a bit of catching up to do, but at least my MR2 does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, which is nice. :D

18 May 05, 14:55
Do you lot do lots of tweaking?

Dar
18 May 05, 15:10
I do some, not a lot.

I might get into it a bit more, but usually once I do a slight bit and I'm happy with how the car handles and how its acceleration and top speed are I leave it at that. I dont really change all the damper and all those other settings
usually just tyre pressure, suspension and gear ratios.

I'm based in Europe, I bought myself one of those Modenas after reading your post ;). There is a series race for stock Modenas which the prize for winning is the Challenge Stradale, after I get that I'll fire some extra bits onto both Ferraris.

Anyone else won the Tommy Kiara's Nissan Skyline? It's an S-Class car but it let me put every single buyable upgrade onto it and it didn't go into the R-Class, though I don't know if you can do that in the first place. It's got 10.0 for acceleration, honestly, you have to see this thing it's so quick!

I started playing this in Career last night ...

I've started with the Assists off except AUTO Gears .... but a few races later and I was still sliding right through corners .... whilst the CPU brakes at exactly the same time as me and just glides round the corner without so much as a little screech ?

I am not among the Elite players when it comes to Sim-driving Games as I have never really played most of them for long if at all ... but I want to give this one a fairer crack of the whip and try and get in to it in a bigger way and hopefully be half decent on it.

What assists do most of you Guys use or not use as the Case may be ?

Basically I don't want to be a Tart and use ALL the Assists but at the same time I am gonna lose all patience with it if I keep going like last night .... had to keep Restarting the Race over and over :mryellow:

So any advice from you Guys would be welcomed

Thanks.

Holio
19 May 05, 11:18
I think the Com basically plays with the assists on, so no brakes locking up, and having traction control and stabilty control on. When I was on Live last Sunday, everyone only had the driving line turned off, and so it seemed fair enough with everyone doing the same thing.

While playing career offline, I have all the assists off except having auto gears and light damage rather than simiulation, but that it only to get credit bonus and make more spondoolies.

babs
19 May 05, 11:23
I play with the driving line on atm, just til I learnt the tracks better, but the only other assist I have on is ABS. I think with traction off I can learn to control my accelerating better (especially off the line), and I love having stability off, 4-wheel gliding through some of the fast corners (like the end on one of the Autumn Ring configurations) is too much fun :)

Dar
19 May 05, 13:13
I only use ABS, and the only reason I use it is because I believe I should still have a fair chance of making it around a corner if I miss the braking line by about 5 feet, which, to be honest, cant happen with ABS turned off becuase you just lock the wheels and slide away the wrong direction. :D
Much like Babs I love to be able to get my car sideways if I want, and the traction control just takes away a lot of the fun, not only at the start of the race but also coming out of most corners. I prefer to be able to accelerate at my own pace, or spin the wheels a bit if I so desire.

Also Holio, I think you'll find I was only using ABS online that evening as well. ;)
I've only tried the other things a few times, not sure if I'll keep them or not, I'm still deciding.

ClassicD
19 May 05, 13:52
Tried em all off when I first got the game, I'm afraid ABS is a must for myself as the wheels just lock up far too easily (with pedals you'd be able to control that much better). As I was really struggling at first I turned everything back on (except the racing line), and have just left it that way. TCS I'm not sure about, I think I need it as I tend to have a bit of an itchy trigger-finger and end up spinning my wheels without it. STM, well I have no flookin idea what that does, I'll turn it off next time I play and see what happens.

Dar
19 May 05, 14:25
You''l hate it with STM off mate, it basically lets the power to yuor wheels run free, therefore meaning drift! :D
Judging by your hate for all things sideways, I'd say you'd be better off with that left on as well. ;)

I play with all assists off apart from automatic gears. I do lock the wheels a lot when breaking but after a while I get used to the car and the breaking distances for it. The only real car I've had bother with is the Corvette C6 I think it is. I modified it so it is now over 800hp, this was to complete the last couple of events on the amateur competitions. However I really struggle with it cos you need to lightly press the trigger to accelerate otherwise you end up sliding all over the place. I think I might need to turn some assists on to finish those events or try another car.

How far through are all you guys? I think I am around 40% of career mode just now. It's getting hard though.

Dar
19 May 05, 21:12
I'm only just over 10% through at this stage. not gonna rush it. :)

KNGMNKY
22 May 05, 17:48
Christ. It isn't half getting hard. Anybody tried the stock Modena event? I tried the first race a couple of times at Laguna Seca and it's driving me mad. I'm getting laps time into low 1 min 31's but if I make one little mistake I fall to the back of the pack and then they just pull away getting lap times in the 1 min 29's. I tried with ABS and STM on and got a better overall time but still finished 2nd last or something. Looks as though I'll be forced to put the A.I back to normal.

:(

I'm loving this game now, had a couple of goes at the weekend and the driving model is excellent. It is simulated racing but more geared on the fun side. The AI is really great in my opinion.

I'm loving driving my 291bhp supercharged Mini Cooper S, it is quality. I need to add a few more mods to try and get some traction off the line as I am still wheel spinning in 3rd gear :D . I have also switched off all assists apart from ABS and Auto Gears, much much better handling with TCS off.

I too am really enjoying this now after my initial Frustrations ...

I think half my problem was I was trying to drive EXACTLY like the CPU rather than the way I wanted to drive, The other half of the problem being that I was always playing it late at Night when I was already pretty knackered and I think this just made me get even more Frustrated with it when I made mistakes ... :mryellow:

This Weekend I'd been playing it at a more reasonable time and I found myself having a lot more patience and probably better reactions too. I also went on Live for the first time Yesterday and had a Snoop around to see what was what ... Interesting to see the Replays that are on there you can learn a wee bit from that stuff.

I am still pretty Pish mind ;-) .... but Basically using different cars coupled with more playing time and getting to know some of the Tracks better has lead to me feeling a bit more confident and in control rather than just bumbling around the Track like I was initially.

It's just like anything else I guess .... If you want to be half decent you have to invest the Time :)

P.S. Mr. Wright If you see this can I get an invite to "The Club" please. ;-)

Some of the tracks are great. I was getting annoyed at not knowing the tracks but after the weekend I know some of them really well. I love the Rio track now, that is great, so is Blue Mountain, Tsakuba Circuit etc etc. Great race tracks. I did some of the point to point racing as well and that is pretty cool.

I haven't sold a car yet, I'm gonna try and get them all.

So I've heard. How much exactly? Is it a percentage of your winnings or a certain amount each time regardless of what you win using him.

It seems a pretty cool feature. I've raced against mine in head to head but I always finish well clear of it. I suppose I need to train it a bit more.

I think it was around 75% of my winnings, there is just no need for it to rob me blind. I only did it the once and when I saw how much I had earned I decided never to use it again. Though as my actual driving is piss poor I can see me wheeling him out again the near future ;)
